Well, the arc listing lists this as the last chapter of the Shibuya arc. That did not read like a last chapter but I've been binging all night into the morning and I want to go to bed.
The Shibuya arc is the main reason I decided to read the manga instead of just waiting for season 2, as I've heard many people call it one of the best arcs in shonen history, and a few people even compared it to Chimera Ant. I don't even think this is my favourite arc in Jujutsu Kaisen to be honest, especially with that non-ending if this is indeed how it ends. I'm still partial to the Kyoto arc, I think Todo & Itadori vs. Hanami is still probably the best fight in the whole series, and it ended with baseball. But to be fair, that arc has been animated, and I've definitely enjoyed JJK more in the anime, so maybe in the manga this is my favourite but I lean to the ones animated, since I can't follow the action 100%, the OST slaps, and there's consistent sakuga throughout the series.
The Chimera Ant comparisons sort of makes sense to me though. Specifically, it carried the chaos element of the Palace Invasion portion of Chimera Ant. Where there are two sides at conflict in one isolated area, occasionally different fights and characters will intersect at surprising moments. I think the Palace Invasion is a lot better for a variety of reasons, but one that I'll specify now is that it was more fair with who got involved. When the arc started, we got shots of every team involved in the circumstance but characters outside of them would show up with no foreshadowing. Inumaki shows up out of the blue, and more egregiously, Tsumuko shows up at the end to act as hero. All the parts were the established players intersect are exciting, but those instances were pretty poor.
But the main difference is that Chimera Ant was heavily driven by it's thematic thesis on humanity and crafting strong character arcs for every principle player involved, everyone grew and evolved in that arc. Shibuya Incident is driven by battles. There's not much in the way of thematic focus, and only a few moments of character growth or insight, Itadori naturally gets the most, surprisingly I think the villains were granted more moments of insight than the heroes, with Jogo, Choso, "Geto", and Toji, though I do feel in several cases it was underwhelming.
Regardless of those moments, the Shibuya Incident arc was focused on what JJK was always focused on, creating cool, hype, memorable sequences. You might think with my rant there that I don't like this arc but I say read my other posts in this thread. One of JJK's strengths is that it knows what it is, and it knows how to execute it well. It's not my favourite type of storytelling, and the Shibuya Incident arc likely wouldn't even crack my top five shonen arcs one per series, but there were certainly highlights and I didn't hate reading it. Nobara vs. Mahito was great, though she better be alive, lol. I actually went into this arc expecting her to die. I've read people say one of the best things about JJK is that it's not afraid to kill it's characters, and in the anime discussion thread, someone who thought they were being coy stated that when we finally get Nobara's backstory it doesn't matter considering what happens to her. I read that as a "Okay, guess she's dying" but at this point, I'm fairly certain that they just assumed she died here and the series hasn't really addressed it one way or another yet. I've been holding off on sharing that since I didn't want to potentially spoil anyone else catching up. At the point, I'm pretty sure the manga hasn't stated whether or not she's alive, which is weird if true. But I guess we'll/I'll find out.
And also, SUKUNA! His stretch of chapters was easily the best run of chapters in the arc, maybe the whole series. Loved seeing him in action. |
