- //"I don't suppose that depicting incorporeal human beings, creators of the anime were trying to show the difference between underground world and surface, nor picture any flashbacks in mind of spectator. I recommend you to read "Time Machine" written by Herbert Wells. Following the plot, protagonist finds himself in future, which look eerie and awkward; surface of planet is filled with completely non-agressive enviroment, with stunning grounds of wild, jungle-like nature. He meets childish humanoids with weak musculature, and soon finds out, that those...anthropomorphic beings is a future people. After victory on every possible deseases, after modifying their lives towards of "comfort", they have evolved / degrade, because no longer needed to adapt planet to their needs. They have lost ability to speech, produce art. There was nothing to fight for, humans of the next day have changed all world due their needs. That's the theory of narrator.
My guess that those so-called ghosts is just an evolved people, which turned into an energy substance. Maybe thousand years of evolution divides surface and underground in "Texhnolyze". THINK of it. Those "ghosts" must be think of obsolete underground human beings like we think of ants, which builds their termitary out of dirt. They have no interest to intruders. And you expect, that those substances will explain main characters, why did they loss will to live. We'll never know - they're inhuman now. In fact, that's one of the scariest episodes in whole series."// someone wrote this i forgot where, i decided to keep it
