Of course, each anime has a target audience and each anime subtype has a fanbase. The concentration of sexes in the fanbases varies, for example, YAOI tends to be favored by females and targeted for them, usually with feminine male characters and an emotional basis, whereas majority of all harem anime are targetted towards the general males, with the main character being "boringly normal", though ending up with a number of girls falling for him, some of them even being regarded as the "most beautiful girl around".

Of course, on the Internet, there's the issue of stalking and generally harassment that is more common towards females than males, which would make a lot of females want to leave the "gender" field empty. Not to mention the fact that the same can happen in crowded conventions.

If anything, I find the stereotypes within them to be rather amusing. You know, how all males supposedly watch hentai (especially ones with tentacles) and are fat, unpopular and ugly and how the girls are fanatic yaoi fans and ship every good-looking anime character in a gay manner and are overweight and ugly. It's honestly rather amusing to see how people seem to believe in such things. Well, I suppose having a polar opposite of the stereotype once a while would be enlightening.

Because text doesn't have tits, I guess. Most guys use avatars/sigs/profile pics of female characters, and usernames are often meaningless, so it's impossible to tell at a glance.

depends I am a member of a few large shoujo clubs on MAL and most of them have almost no males other than my self. I imagine it slightly favors male users (MAL that is) but not by a huge margin.

I'd say there are generally more guys than girls. When the general public thinks of games and anime, they think of guys. So I think that actually stops some girls from getting interested, because it's a 'guy thing'. Meh. I think that, of the people I hang out with, we're split pretty evenly in gender.

I think the gender depends on the Anime.
Because you have very cute characters and romantic stories and I think that they are more for girls like Bottle Fairy, Lucky Stars and Zero no Tsukaima etc. but you also have very violent Anime's and not every girl like's to watch that.

*didn't like Lucky Star much and liked Baccano!*

I'm a shame to my own gender.

After looking around MAL and looking at people profiles, mabye it just that i have bad luck and i am finding mostly male users. i don't know if it is true or anything but it seams like more guys watch anime than girls. i don't know if the same or oppisite is true for manga. i would like to know your thoughts and if you think some people just put female on their gender even thow they are men...

You've never been to an anime convention, have you?

EH... i think its more of a girl thing TBH
first time i ever got introduced to anime was a girl who had an anime club at school.

Going by what i think an average person is... i notice guys are not really into anime, and girls will typically watch stuff like spirited away or something like that

Oh and as far as naruto and other popular anime like that, you would think more guys would watch it, but i've honestly noticed more girls tend to watch the anime/read the manga than guys. And im only counting people I know in "real life" not a forum.

The world itself is "more of a guy thing than a girl thing". So, the answer is yes.

Sexism aside, it's obvious anime is aimed more at guys. Do you see fan service for girls (hairy chests)? No, you only see huge, bouncy boobs, tight female arses and mini-skirts.

This is what I would think as well.

Take a look at FF.net, most of the anime/manga authors are girls. I've read many 300k fanfics that isn't even labelled complete yet that are written by girls. How the hell do they have that much dedication to write that much?!

But, it doesn't really matter. Sure, there are many anime/manga labelled as shounen/seinen but this does not stop girls in reading them and vice-versa with shoujo.

There are genres. Its not a guy/girl-thing, its just that the shounen genre is targeted at.. well.. shounen.

I dont really care though. I liked DNAngel which apparently is a shoujo anime. I shouldve figured that out when the beautiful 18-year-old long-haired main character saved several innocent girls from the manicured claws of a winged unicorn by using a magical feather.

hm, actually I would tend to say animes are more a girl thing because of the (mostly) detailed presentation and huge effort that is included in most animes and girls consider things like that more...but actually that's just a prejudice and so I think anime is just a media to present a story, just like novels, comics, movies, mangas or audio books and so it isn't bound to a single gender.

Many males too like cute characters, whatever a boy or a girl!

Generally speaking, I think Anime is a thing for both genders, depending on the genre just like you said.

There are both male and female animes/mangas, called shonen (intended for males) and shoujo (intended for females), which you all should know. Both genders may watch either of the categories. Many harem animes, which is pretty much intended for boys, are watched by many girls too.
I think anime is watched more by boys than girls as there are more male intended series.

I really have no idea what the general stats are, or what the ratio is for MAL however, on another site that I am a part of, guys outnumber girls about 3-4 to 1. Most of my friends who like anime are also guys.

This is just my personal experience, and I'm sure there are lots of other girls who enjoy anime as much as myself. There certainly are enough animes intended for both genders available.

That's right, who gives a crap.
Same goes for the question-anime is for kids or adult?

And do you think someone would kindly enough wasting time counting votes in every country to know whether male/female watch more anime?

That's stupid and ridiculous. It just depends what type of anime, male generally like certain genre of anime, same goes for the opposite gender.
