Why are you still watching an anime that you dislike?

Seems to be a lot of people seasons deep on shows they don't like. Why not drop it?

I can't bother to push too far in if I'm not enjoying myself. I'll give most anime a few episodes to develop but after that if nothing is keeping me or is actively repelling me, I'll drop the show.

At a certain point watching a show you dislike, are you just looking to be disappointed? Is it a love to hate thing? Bit of FOMO?

Well so far I haven't seen many shows that I thought were bad/horrible, but since I mostly watch the ones that don't have hundreds of episodes, I mostly want to stick it out in hopes they get better. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Doubt I'd do the same if the show had 300+ episodes with a lot of filler.

For me and i guess for most people it is like.....just one episode per week and I can manage one episode of a boring show (which in my opinion is boring) per week without any hesitation....I will just rate it low ;P

Honestly, I just want to complete the anime and see if it gets any better. I also already started it and spent time on it so I just think to myself "Why not just full commit and complete it". I hate having dropped an anime because I won't know if it was actually good or not because I haven't seen the whole thing. When I do drop anime its because I forgot about them haha.

you answered your own question, at least when it comes to me.
I only ever drop anime of it's absolutely uninteresting or pisses me off with something to that level.
different people have different level of tolerance.

I'm with you, if I don't like a show I usually drop it. With so much anime out there to be enjoyed it seems like a waste of time to me to force myself through a show that I dislike. But every one's different and the reasons I've seen people state for not dropping shows are:

1. They are completionists. It's an pseudo-OCD thing where they have to complete what they finish.
2. They keep watching because the show might just get better.
3. They don't like to form an opinion about a show unless they've seen the whole thing
4. They believe that watching bad shows helps to hone their tastes or critical eye for anime as a whole.

A combination of factors like my retarded completionist watch policy, the fact that I watch a lot of shows with other people to ease the pain and the fact that I'm very easy to please so I find entertainment value even in garbage.

There aren't many airing shows this season so I felt like I might as well.

I don't like dropping animes, it's that simple. If I pick something, I am expecting to enjoy it to some content. If not...well... I hope it gets better in the end because it worked like that with some animes I've watched in the past. It usually happens with seasonal ones and with them it's pretty simple - one episode per week won't kill me. It also helps me pick shows more carefully and not just watch anything that catches my eye.

Yeah, this is true too. I guess it's like that saying "the sweet is never as sweet without the sour".

I don't, if a show doesn't get any better after 4-6 episodes, I drop it.
Why people does that? I will guess that people who didn't even loved the 1st episode but continue to watch have big faith it will get better (which is wrong for my opinion, if the 1st ep wasn't interesting it usually doesn't get better) but if they watched 2-3 eps and enjoyed though the next episodes went in the wrong way, I will understand it though I'm not like that.

I agree with 2 and 3, though about 1 I really doesn't understand why anyone will buy dvd or such when they don't know the anime, I don't believe that anyone is doing it for 4, if they do, I thing they got a problem.

You don't question masochists why they are like that.

I'm not though, I drop anime as soon as I dislike it.

Honestly, how hard is it to just search the forums for one of the hundred similar threads copying each other almost to a letter...

The reason why have well been listed in the reply #6. Anyone still unaccustomed as to why this is a "thing", refer to the aforementioned input.

Where do you draw your conclusions from? It is hard for the human mind to form a perspective on "good and bad" quality when they have never seen anything "bad". Only through comparison, which also needs to be a continued practice to make sure the general lines and axioms are formed. Personally, I do not know anyone who would be doing this willingly, watching series that are objectively worthless or not worth the time, only to be able to study them closely. But common sense and logic hint me that such people exist - and they are either professional critics or professional authors, who do actually hone their occupational skills through comparing something bad to something good and finding the answers "why".

I always try to finish what I have started.
If I drop a show it has something in it that I can't stand.

Part of it is a completion thing. If I start watching even one episode of a show, then I HAVE to finish the rest. Can't really explain it. The other more important aspect is not wanting to score/judge an entire show without having seen everything it has to offer. I think it's silly that anyone would. Some I genuinely like watching BECAUSE of how bad they are. Others I can appreciate from a technical/writing standpoint, despite me not being emotionally invested. And still others I just have to suffer through.

You right I might exaggerating a bit, it just hard to me to think that anyone will watch something not for their taste and likeness, you right that any one have a different taste, there's nothing like "bad anime", just general tastes of people, but why would someone waste their time for something they don't like just for... how did horridhendy said? to compare? life is too nice and short to waste it on something you don't like, at least that's my opinion.

you right that any one have a different taste, there's nothing like "bad anime", just general tastes of people, .

Oh but I have never said something like that. Moreover, I am completely, unquestionably opposed to this statement and will valiantly, yet reasonably defend the good series and criticize rigorously the rest of the industry.

Because i'm always hoping it'll get better or i've watched far too many episodes and it would seem like a waste to just drop it...

Though, i wouldn't say that i hate them, more that they were boring, like, for example: Busou Renkin, i didn't like any of the characters and it was pretty boring but i kept continuing hoping it get's better.....

I just drop it if I don't like it. The only exception is BNHA. My friend made me watch whole three seasons with him.

Once I start watching a series, I almost never drop it. I suppose it's the masochistic side of me.

Sorry but I could have draw that conclusion from what your said:

that's why I said there's not a "bad" anime, but there's a lot opinions of people, I agreed with you, if you didn't understand that. perspective of "good and bad" isn't written in stone but general opinions, there'll be always critics even in "good" anime.

Makes no sense to me. I woulda lost my goddamn mind if I forced myself to watch the entirety of Erementar Gerad instead of dropping it at episode 5

I used to be in the complete everything camp. My mentality changed now. I've invested a lot of time into watch Anime my entire life. I don't want to invest as much time into it anymore at this point in my life so I only watch stuff I have immediate interest in and enjoy. The rest I drop or put indefinitely on hold.

Nowadays I rarely finish an anime I don't enjoy but in those rare cases (actually it's a bit more than rare) it's because of one of these reasons:

1- It's from a genre I typically would enjoy (SoL/CGDCT/mahou shoujo) or it's a meme show
2- It's too short and it doesn't take much time to complete it anyway (<5 min per ep shows)
3- It's a 1 cour anime I enjoyed the first episodes (3-4 episodes) but it suddenly gets bad but I'm hoping the last episodes become good like the first but they won't or I've watch until last episodes for whatever reason so why not complete it
4- One of my friends insisting on completing that show (it's not happening anymore but it happened in the past)
5- Oh I forgot to say but maybe it's visually appealing to me

Because it may reedem itself with the ending and because I don't want to deal with fans that could tell me "You can't say it's bad if you haven't watched it until the end".

This may sound silly, but I continue watching for the experience. Maybe a show could have a good twist in it or bring something new to the table. The ending could be awesome, but I will never know if I drop it. If I think a show doesn’t have a chance to have any of those things and I’m not enjoying it I will normally drop it.
