Why do males tend to have female character avatars, while females tend to have male character avatars?

| I don't think I've noticed any correlation like that. To me, it seems like an equal split between guys having a guy/girl avatar and girls having a girl/guy avatar... if that makes sense. |

| I used to have Nao from Charlotte as my dp on telegram because I loved her character design and thought she looked super cute. But after a while I thought it was kind of weird like, I don't want people to misunderstand that that's who I think I look like/my mental image of myself i.e. overly, mega adorable?! I overthink and judge myself very harshly haha but yeah like everyone else has already said, the point of a profile pic is usually to showcase your favourite characters rather than choosing someone like you. I thought it was kind of obvious as well, a larger proportion of people are straight so that's pretty much the answer. |

| Thread moved into the correct board. As for the topic I use female avatars because I find them visually more pleasing. Although this depends, somewhere I use male avatars instead. I suppose more than anything I just want to show off characters I like to others. Gender is then somewhat secondary, though I tend to use female avatars more often. On MAL I'm currently using my two most favorite girls as forum avatar and profile avatar respectively. I assume most people have similar reasons and besides just liking character for their traits/actions/etc. certain romantic/sexual appeal plays a role as well, which would explain why many people use characters of opposite genders, because that appeal might be what makes a different between two otherwise equally liked characters. |

| I mean, it really depends on the person. Some change frequently, some go with waifus/husbandos, and some just go with their favourite character. I've gone with the latter. Tomoya Okazaki has just been a character that has had a good impact in my animu watching hobby. Other than that, I just go with a drawn self-portrait. |

Likes: A good story, characters, writing, romance, a good plot twist or something that breaks expectations (In a good way), 'backstory' and justice. Dislikes: Bad romance, too much fanservice, the harem genre, yuri, yaoi, and bad writing. |
