That was certainly a great year. I never noticed that those shows all aired during that year. I suppose I should start including it on the list of best years too. So far I was only including 2011, 2012 and 2017 (mostly because I don't have as many shows seen pre-2010). But since I watched and loved many of those shows I think that year deserves a mention as well.

My favorite years are 2006-2007, 2010-2011 and 2018-2019. I think anime's experiencing a 2nd golden age in this century at the moment. Lucky Star isn't an underrated gem. It was as popular (perhaps even more popular) as those 3 shows.

"2006 The Golden Year of Anime?" - there are many golden years not only one tho "Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch" - such a trash "Mushishi Aired: Oct 23, 2005 to Jun 19, 2006" - thus 2005 anime "Katekyo Hitman Reborn!" - standard battle shounen trash "Aria The Natural" - boooring...and I like sol but not this series "Ergo Proxy" - pretentious and devoid of actual qualities I think the OP missed some good titles for example: Yomigaeru Sora: Rescue Wings Juuousei Meitantei Conan: Tantei-tachi no Requiem - one of the few good Conan movies Kidou Senshi Gundam MS IGLOO: Mokushiroku 0079 Hachimitsu to Clover II Project Blue Chikyuu SOS Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Ken`ichi - yeah, battle shounen trash but al least funny and with some nice intrigues between the street gangs Freedom - like sci-fi written by Kasuhiro Otomo

For me 2006 was certainly one special year when it comes to anime, since it was when we got Internet in our home. I mean, even years before I watched anime, but it was only what TV offered, or what was in VHS/DVD shops. At first I started with Dragon Ball various stuff, and various shonens, but little by little, the list of anime I saw became bigger, and bigger. Btw, I'm surprised no one mentioned first D.Gray-man anime; IMO, it was a great combination of shonen, comedy, and gothic. There was also Witchblade, amazing fanservicey story about one mother, and her daughter.

I admit I putted Juuousei, Meitantei Conan, MS IGLOO and Project Blue Chikyuu SOS just for volume but... Yomigaeru Sora: Rescue Wings, Hachimitsu to Clover II, Solid State Society and Freedom are pretty solid titles,at least way more serious and substantial than Code Geass, Aria and Ergo Proxy. Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi will wipe the floor with Katekyo Hitman Reborn. And yeah Mushishi is pretty great but it is from 2005 not 2006. On the other hand you have in your favourites stuff like Steins;Gate 0, Clannad: After Story and Hibike! Euphonium 2 - thus our tastes misalign greatly, so no point to argue to much about our differences. |

To better explain why I would put 2004 over 2006, I made up a quick matchup chart of my favorites of these years by major studio, and 2004 comes out on top for me in most all cases. Keep in mind I love all of these shows (except one which I felt forced to include). Feel free to add more to the list or tear mine apart. Gonzo: Gankutsuou (2004) vs. Welcome to the NHK! (2006) - Two of Gonzo's best shows, but Gankutsuou feels bigger and richer, and NHK sometimes feels cheap. Studio 4C: Mind Game (2004) vs. Tekkon Kinkreet (2006) - Mind Game feels more polished and better structured, whereas Tekkon Kinkreet is more about the spectacle. Manglobe: Samurai Champloo (2004) vs. Ergo Proxy (2006) - Samurai Champloo is better directed and written, with Ergo Proxy lacking in the fun factor. Studio Deen: Zipang (2004) vs. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (2006) - Zipang is one of Studio Deen's finest series, and is supremely engaging. Higurashi hurts my soul to watch. Production IG: GitS SAC 2nd GIG (2004) vs. GitS SAC Solid State Society (2006) - You could also replace 2nd GIG with Innocence, but in both cases these are more significant entries in the franchise. Solid State Society feels more like a rehash of the original movie. Madhouse 1: Monster (2004) vs. Death Note (2006) - Monster's scope is astonishing and character building unmatched. Death Note never quite reaches the same heights. Madhouse 2: Beck (2004) vs. Black Lagoon (2006) - Equally as great to me, and similarly polarizing among reviewers. Madhouse 3: Paranoia Agent (2004) vs. Kemonozume (2006) - Equally as great to me, and similarly bizarre.

Man, I love the mid-2000s years of anime. I thought about this on and off for a few days since the thread title first appeared and came to the conclusion that it would be 2004 for me. Reasons? Koi Kaze (a 10), Elfen Lied (a 9), and Aishiteruze Baby (which I think I have currently sitting at an 8 ratings-wise, but may actually rewatch soon and end up bumping up to a 9). Also, the last season of Inuyasha's four year initial run (2000 - 2004) before the five year hiatus saw its return in 2009, with a lot of momentous events in the series at the time. Looking forward to swimming more in the 2004 soup.
