I'm sure Isabella doesn't really care for him as her child. In the flashback to when Ray was humming the tune of the boy, Ray asked "Mom, why did you give birth to me?" and she responded "It was for survival", showing she really did not care for him and instead used him, just like she used him as a spy. So it makes sense she cares more about harvesting Ray than him being a son, as he is just another part of the livestock.

Did she say "It was for survival" in the English subtitle (assuming you watch with English subtitles) or is it what she said in Japanese? I don't speak Japanese, so I don't know what she really said in that scene, but in the German subtitle, she said "So YOU can survive, Ray". That's very different to a simple "For survival", implying that she did care for Ray rather than only caring about herself.

I don't know the manga, so I can only judge from the episode. Just wondering what the right translation would be.

I'm not exactly able to look up what she said currently, but it's what I thought she said. Bearing a child is the procedure to becoming a Mama, and if she refused to have a child then, well, she probably would've been fed to the monsters. So she would've had to have bore him for her survival.

Wow! I expected it to be good, but I didn't expect it to be that good! Honestly, what an amazing ride that it was. And the best part is that we are getting a season 2 next year! Absolutely a masterpiece!

Kinda surprised to see that much hate from manga readers. It's been a while for me, but I thought it was quite decent for an adaption. Can't say I'm looking forward to the sequel since I didn't like any of the arcs after the gracefield escape.

The fact that Isabella who gave birth to Ray is indisputable. At the end she thinks as where a mother is.

Really good! I was skeptical at first since there's a bunch of kids but turns out it was great. I do feel like kids should be older than they are, sometimes it's hard to believe a 4 year old can understand what's going on. Nevertheless solid anime. Let's go for season 2!
I don't typically read manga so if I get anything right please don't tell me.

I was wary of them being able to adapt this well in 12 episodes, but they pulled it off. Different direction styles between the anime and manga, but I think the anime did a fine job. This last episode was amazing. Overall it's a 8 or 9/10 for me. I wish MAL did .5s, but for now I'm gonna give it a 9/10. I was really pleased with it. Not as good as the manga, but still a good adaptation.

Gonna quote myself from another thread:
LoomyTheBrew said:
Was it faithful? Not completely. Was it a good adaptation? I'd yes.

It was faithful in the sense that the themes, tone, story, and characters were spot on. It wasn't too faithful in the direction. The manga is heavily monologue based like Death Note, has abstract introspectives into the mind, future Emma narrates time to time, and uses flashbacks a fair amount (not in an annoying way mind you; for example you get images of the facility, monsters, and more). The manga is a lot more in the head which I think is better because it racked up the tension and the theories that were going on in their head which made it so much fun. Plus the coming up with plans and the suspicions they had, it was really intensified in the manga because we got a look into their minds.

In terms of faithfulness, the final episode was the most similar to manga with the flashbacks, abstract stuff like Norman appearing, and some monologues from Emma. The final episode was amazing.

However, I think the anime did a great job. I honestly did not think they could pull this off well in 12 episodes, but they did. The anime goes a different route with the direction with focusing more on visual presentation, camera angles, sound effects, and facial expressions. In a lot of ways it shares with the Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel movies' method of visual representation of what the characters are feeling without diving into their heads. We know how Emma, Norman, and Ray are feeling. We still understand the tone with this visual direction. A lot of the same feelings that you may have felt in the manga are shared with the anime despite a different directional method.

Both are good, but I of course thought the manga's way was better just because the thriller and psychological portion gets highlighted more and enhances the characters. But the anime's method is still very very good, don't get me wrong.

The visual presentation is probably what saved this season to be honest because if they went the monologue route and tried to fit that in 12 episodes, it probably would have been a disaster. That would have needed like 18 episodes to make it more worthwhile. Also considering what's coming up, the visual direction may actually enhance certain scenes so I'm excited to see how they're going to handle future arcs.

The anime definitely cut and shifted around some stuff, but for the most part they had all the key parts and other lesser parts that made it a really good package. My only complaint with some of the stuff they cut out is that they didn't give too much focus to Minerva! That is pretty damn important and it also just made the mystery even more interesting. Minerva is an important plot point, but they did have enough of it where they will probably be able to squeak by with it next season.

Damn, so it was not only Phil. It kinda makes sense, because the amount of kids who ran away was quite problematic. I mean, I am sure I was not the only one who though "wait, weren't there more of them in this mansion?".

So the youngest kids were left behind and Phil volunteered to be their leader (who knows the truth) with a mission of preparing rest of kids to escape one day and mostly to survive as long as it is possible.

Man, this finale was great. Music, animation, art, direction, scenes, emotions. Indeed that was a fine finale worthy of such an awesome anime. Overall quality of "Yakusoku no Neverland" remained high, so the last episode of Season 1 was under pressure of showing something even better than the previous eps. Fortunately, mission can be treated as fully accomplished, at least that's my opinion.

Having read the manga and some of the scans, it's an excellent episode! I think it's more intense in emotion than in the manga, especially to the flashback of Isabella, which I love in passing!

Waiting for the second season, I must resume reading the scans because the last volumes released in France will soon catch up with my last scan I read.

Solid 10/10 for me.
The adaptation did it's best to emulate the LN/manga and did great to satisfy my experience.
I'm kinda annoyed with some complaining about the non existent monologues. In my honest opinion; in most cases monologues can sometimes spoil a scene that requires you to think for yourself which raises the level of tension when done correctly. Sometimes being handed information via monologue kills the purpose of figuring things out and being inside the head of the protagonist or villain to convey their thought process seems more like lazy writing because it's easier to just put it out there with a monologue.

Predictable and mediocre finale and I can't say I'm surprised. Promised Neverlands had sign of greatness but in the end, was just okay/fine with a slow pacing.

We finally had the great escape and it had zero tension; it's was made very clear that were protected by the plo-I mean by Norman and that everything was gonna be fine. Even if apparently Emma could'nt predict that some kids could get scared at the last seconds. It's funny with this show: the characters are either smart or stupid, depending if it's convenient for the plot. And please, stop with the Ghost-Norman or the "Norman thank you for everything": HE.ISN'T.DEAD. No one is buying it so stop pretending he is dead.

Also, letting a 4 years old decide for you?! Nice move, Emma! I don't care if he is a super genius, he is still 4! When your 4, you still eat crayons! But nope, instead of having to make a tough decision, let the toddler handle it.

And really, the generic looking monsters have only spears for weapons? Do guns not exist even tho radios do? But hey, Ray learned that friendship is magical! What a great and original lesson, never saw that one in a shonen!

Isabella's flashback was the only saving grace of this fiasco and even that wasn't very good. At least she is kind of sexy with her long hair. Oh and also... DON AND GLASSES-GIRL FINALLY DID SOMETHING THAT MATTERED ONSCREEN! After eleven episodes of being worthless but still! Good for them and maybe, maybe in season 2 they're gonna start to be likeable (we can all dream).

Honestly, I should have stop with the first three episodes (and the one where Norman leave, this one was good).

Pretty dull adaptation overall.

Emma continues to have no real purpose or role in the series with everyone else around her really pulling the weight.

She should have die so that Ray could take center stage as he and Norman were the real brains of the operation while Gilda and Don really stepped up, and poor Phil even as well.

Only good episode was the one with Ray post Norman accepting his fate, really Ray gave the best performances the whole anime.

Music was also goofy and always just out of place, a different composer needs to be chosen. We needed something more atmospheric like Made in Abyss, UVERworld did deliver a phenomenal ED.

WOW! What an episode!
Overall the escape plan was good but what really made this episode was the soundtrack and mama's flashback! <3
I can't forget this song, so good!

That scene blew me away! I guess something went into my eye during that scene...
In the end, she was the best mama that they could have gotten, she didn't do anything (tried to escape etc) because she saw how hard/impossible it was so she gave up, but damn! What a flashback!

The whole scene with Ray reading that book and singing that song!!! 10/10 scene, probably one of the best scenes from the whole season! "Mama why did you gave birth to me", holy sh**! Norman knew all of this, this whole time, imagine knowing that this is your mom, damn!

I never thought that Isabella could be this pretty with loose hair, damn! xD
Even when she was a kid, she was such a cutie :3

Phil is such a smart kid, wow! And that ending! "Don't worry, they escaped safely", i definitely didn't expect that!

I wonder how they will come back now and save them? Hope there are other people outside that managed to survive and are fighting the monsters.
Because during the escape they never stood a chance against the monsters, they are so big and strong.

As a manga reader, i expected a little more from the adaptation, it was mediocre for the anime of this size and popularity! What saved it was it's own plot, so i really hope that 2S will be much better than this! 8-9/10

These scenes! <3

the anime version of when your essay doesn’t meet the word count and you have to add a bunch of white bread filler to it so it seems like you put in more work than u actually did. this show seemed so cool from the first episode and since it’s so slow you’d think they’d put a lot on the suspense and drama but nothing was as impactful as it should’ve been. so much could’ve been cut out of each episode....... eek

What an amazing final of the first season! It is one of the best finals I've seen in all my time watching anime.
Another example of how important are the final episodes, before this episode was to score the anime with an 8/10, but now I give a well deserved 9/10 👏👍.
It was a great anime, it kept me looking forward to what would happen in each episode and how the children would manage to escape their cruel fate as cattle. And in the end I was more than amazed, shocked I would say, how they had planned the escape in all that time since Norman was picked up and it seemed that they had given up, but no! They never did it, they kept training and looking for an escape route. They never gave up. Norman gave them more momentum than before.
This episode had many, many surprises, but if I had to choose which was the most surprising, it would be the fact that Ray is the biological son of Mama. That fell like a bucket of cold water. I could not believe it! Until now I keep thinking about that. I think that was the trigger that made this final more than incredible.

I think more than one person has defined a person as the movie "Chicken Run", but darker, in the form of a clear joke, hahaha.
I must say that it has become one of my favorite animes, and I am sure that it is one of the best animes I have seen. I am happy that the Second Season has already been confirmed, I will be waiting for you with much desire 😁.

Psdt: 1.Alre I was the only one who shouted like crazy: "CROSS EMMA! ... FUCK! ... CROSS!"
2. I regret what I said about Phil in the previous episode, doubt him, but he turned out to be a great kid. I hope they can hold on until Emma and Ray return for them.
3. I still hope that Norman is still alive.

Is not about the score in general. But I don’t think Kakegurui is the same level as YNN, unless your ratings are based on categories. I mean, YNN is a 7/10 out of top tier anime, and Kakegurui is a 7/10 for a low tier anime.

So, if removing my bitterness of last episode I enjoyed this one. I would have enjoyed it far more if it was the escape that was led up to or if we saw everything with the more inconsequential stuff being left out. The rock throw rope, the clothes hanger zipline, and the Phil being raised as Ray #2 was pretty awesome stuff. And I felt a sense of tension when Isabella was running to them on the wall even though I knew she would smile at their escape no matter what.

A nitpick for me would be that I had already extracted that Isabella was once an Emma who wanted to escape but couldn't and represents giving up and acceptance. Where Emma goes "we will make the world a place for humans", Isabella goes "I will give my sweet babies as good of a life as they can have in this world", even though I assume she was and has always been a fighter on the inside. Scenes like her knowing how Emma felt about becoming a mom affected me far more than anything Isabella did this episode due to the more subtle realization of it. So, to see what I mostly already knew, she was once a positive little girl with her own Norman, she saw him die and became a mom literally and figuratively, probably breeded in an awful way, and then had to raise that child to be eaten, was too much. I didn't need to know all the awful things she had occur, everything that happened to her was inferable, all her friends did die, and she gave up, and she was forced to accept the situation. I liked leaving it at that or I would have liked a more subtle exploration of those things instead of getting it all at once in a flashback at the very end.

Plus, why did they put a mom in charge of growing her own boy to be eaten? School teachers here cannot even teach their own kid due to bias. Lol... I would have just preferred not to get that plot twist. It felt artificial to me. Funny enough I made up that I saw a spoiler online and told my friends "ISABELLA IS RAYS MOM" before watching it because it was the most cliche spoiler I could think of and it actually happened out of nowhere. That gave me a good chuckle.

Overall, I found the suspense awesome, and I loved the slow world building where we got little pieces of information about the plant and how the world works. I loved being a part of the plan to escape, I actually argued against Digibro and said in this mystery story it isn't a simple carrot and stick game of keeping information we should otherwise know out of our face to keep us coming back. "We too are like the kids trying to escape" I said. Then last episode made fun of me for thinking such a thing and threw everything about the plot I liked out of the way giving me a harsh reality of why a mystery anime like this is reliant on leading up to satisfying conclusions.

I would be okay with secretive, behind the scenes plot movement if I cared more about the characters but after episode 3 I felt they had their gimmicks but were relegated to plot devices who weren't really explored on the basis of who they were as people anymore. Due to this I always liked the main cast but I found them boring, they didn't make me think about them, or why they did what they did, they didn't make me interested to pursue their idiosyncrasies and personalities past what we already knew. Don is the worst example in my opinion as I'd argue he wasn't just unexplored but flawed in his quick acceptance of Conny's death and their situation before being relegated into the background. His arc paired with his personality could have made him a more likable character than even the main three in my opinion.

There's two ways I could have liked this anime more.

1. If it focused on being a "how to escape" mystery/horror anime where we did get all of the clues along the way and were a part in the escape without stuff like last episode occurring.

2. If instead it cared more about showing off the characters as people with different interests, nuanced personalities, different motivations, bigger strengths and weaknesses. We did get some of this near the end and in my opinion in episode 3 but for the most part I would have preferred if this stuff was far more explored than it was. Like I said, I liked them, but liking them on a surface level isn't enough to carry the anime through its carrot and stick mystery/horror story which pulls the rug from under our feet at the end.

5/10, the characters didn't interest me enough and the plot felt like it betrayed me, lol! I enjoyed the plot before I realized I had been tricked and it had some great moments, this episode was a blast and Emma charging down Norman on her crutches was powerful. Overall all the sequences after the leg break up until the reveal in episode 11 were awesome due to me being engaged with the characters for one of the first times since Ray initially joining up with Emma and Norman. But that isn't enough for me to place it higher than 5 because, a 6 to me as an individual means it did more for me than allowing me to like it when it was on screen, it would mean I could reflect on truly loving certain qualities of it after I'm already done with it. In fact, when reflecting on this I'll be more likely to think about how I almost loved it but came out very disappointed.

WOOOOOAAAHHHHH!!! FINALLY ESCAPED!!

This is undisputed my #1 most anticipated anime in this season every week, even more so than Mob Psycho. Glad to know S2 have been announced and 2020 can't come sooner. It's going to be hard to hold back not reading the manga! 9/10 for me.

I'm guessing but I think there's a very good chance that this show will get a live action adaptation as well.

The execution is out of the world for some of the episodes. Non-manga reader here once again.

Anyway, there's no way there's any show out there that would satisfy everybody, not Game of Thrones, not F.R.I.E.N.D.S, not Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood so I'm not "too" surprise to see people shiting on a good show. To each his/her own.

That's totally fair, I would probably just cry a lot and be dumb if I was his age. I mean I just saw my 4 year old cousin the other day and he was not even coherent! However, I did find his acceptance of the scenario quite endearing.. Little kids are really good at understanding how people feel in my experience so when he brought up how he saw Emma and Ray being so sad about Norman being harvested I teared up. 10/10. Holy shit, that was a good season. Bring on season 2! Anyone else get suicidal vibes when Isabella was standing on the wall (right before her flashback)?

Hi, does anyone know the song in episode 12? Im referring to the song in the first few minutes of the episode. Sounds soothing and sad but towards the end of the song has a violin playing. Thanks.

I found this show pretty engaging and enjoyable. At the end of every episode, I was quite desperate to know what will happen next. I don’t think it was amazing, but it was an overall decent and enjoyable series. It made me want to read the manga, to know why the manga-readers thought this show could’ve been a masterpiece.

Isabella being Ray's mother really got me by surprise.

Overall a nice anime but I still can't believe they were sometimes "yelling" their secrets in the house. The training with stone throwing and sliding along a rope without being discovered looked also kind of suspicious, to say the least.

Phil being so smart that he guessed everything didn't surprise me. They foreshadowed it in many occasions, to the point I thought he might have some plans on his own, but no, he just stayed behind.

for manga readers

how goes the story after this ending? Better or worse or same?

Oh boi. You're in for quite the ride. Lol. You will cry over and over again. :''''))
I suggest you read the manga instead. This anime was such a pain for me to watch because it is such a weak adaptation.

It is probably too late for me to say it but, remember when Ray hummed that lullaby a few episodes ago? Episode 10 I think?

Foreshadowing y'all. Lol.

I really love how they handled this episode, no complaints from me, but I’m still conflicted on what score I’ll give this adaptation. I loved ep 1, I watched it twice on the day it aired. Then I didn’t really like how they handled ep 2 until when Krone was gone (forgot which episode). I honestly hated how they handled Krone, I didn’t imagine her to be like that while I was reading the manga 2 years ago and I don’t think that giving her a doll and her shouting all her thoughts was a good idea. I expected more from the episode where Isabella broke Emma’s leg. The Norman focused episodes (9-10?) were fine, I highly appreciated that they included the extras in the volume (child Norman that had a cold). I had a few complaints on how they animated ep 11. Emma looked a lot cooler in the manga. But this episode is a solid 10 for me.

(I scored it 9/10 for now, it should be lower, but I’m really biased on this one because it is my favorite manga. I will be rewatching it with my family on december, I’ll see how I‘ll feel about the anime then before I adjust the score if I will)

Man, last episode when she thought Ray was burning alive all she thought about was getting the brain intact. What an irredeemable character.
