Characters that you hated in the beginning of an anime but found yourself liking them towards the end?

I hated Kuchiki Byakuya first time In Bleach, "who does this arrogant spoiled brat thinks himself?" turned to a "His dry humour is so funny and I love how he never shows any weaknesses to his opponents"

Probs Hitagi from the Monogatari series. Initially portrayed as a massive asshole, and while still that same asshole, it's fun seeing her dere side from time to time

Maybe Victorique from Gosick as well. Again massive dickhead in the beginning but then slowly starts to show her more loving side

Gilgamesh from the Fate-verse is the first one that comes to my mind. Having never known his backstory in actual literature and fate canon, it was a big shock to me the more i looked at the intricacies of his character.

Oooh I definitely relate to this. He annoyed me all throughout the series till the final episodes. I didn't like though, I just stopped hating him.

Exact opposite for me. What about her made your view change specifically?

Kirei Kotomine from the Fate series. I hated him in F/SN 2006 as he was very one-dimensional and a typical villain that was bad for no reason. However, I watched Fate/Zero, and he became one of my favourite villains ever. His chemistry with Gilgamesh, his characterization and his development in Fate/Zero were just awesome, and it was impossible for me to hate him since then.

The same could be said for Meruem, but even more exaggerated. At first, he was one of the most one-dimensional characters HxH had, but I'm glad I was completely wrong... At the end of the Chimera Ant arc, he became my favourite anime villain ever, and one of the best characters ever made. Fun fact: he's the only character that has managed to not being hated or disliked by anyone I know.

Her initial attitude annoyed me, but she started opening up to the other pilots and becoming softer, so I began to like her.

100% agree. When i started liking him he became so imposing in scenes, and rewatching Zero made me feel every scene was so much more imposing than i thought. His VA does such a great job.

Not exactly Hate to Love as I like him very much but there are times where I find myself hating him so much : Hisoka - HxH

He's such an entertaining, unpredictable and exciting character and yet I fucking hate some of the things he does

Shinji from EVA, I had alot of fights on facebook beacuse I had this idé in my head that he sucked as a protagonist. I didn't like that he ran away, that he didn't enter the damn robot, that ppl died thanks to them. The score I gave EVA and the movie was very lowe just thanks to my hate for this character.

But after I read the manga and re-watched the anime I changed my mind.
Alot thanks to the manga that explores that universeum different then the anime.

I woud not say I love him, but i can say for sure that I like him now as a character. And that I was wrong in the past ^^

I hate blackbeard from one piece since the very beginning of the his appearance
not gonna spoil anything about the plot but everything he does is a manifestion of his ruthless ego and cunning personality which are just straight up hatable
nonetheless I later was fond of his ambition and greed because he is the only true pirate in the series after all

Souryuu Asuka Langley and Shinji from Eva. Unlike Asuka, Shinji became a personal favourite after I watched End of Eva, the Rebuilds, read the manga and rewatched certain scenes from the original anime. With Asuka, I disliked her throughout the series finding her annoying and an emotionless bitch, but I was wrong. After I saw her fighting for her life in End of Evangelion, I understood how much pain she had suffered. In my opinion, she was one (or the one) that suffered most in Evangelion, and she fought to change her life and live, as the famous song say: "for no one else".

I'm talking especially about Asuka because I hated her so much but now I love her as a character.

Jotaro, because really, he was a total douche in the beginning with seemingly nothing better to say than "shut the fuck up mom" but he somehow went from that to a very loveable guy.

Usagi went from whiny and somewhat annoying to one of my favorite anime characters over the course of Sailor Moon.

That’s probably the most drastic change in feeling toward a character I’ve had in the medium.

The best example of this happening for me was with Jean Kirstein in Shingeki no Kyojin. At first I saw him as the generic douchebag that beefs with the protagonist and would develop into that character that every fan can universally dislike. However as the show progressed he quickly became one of, if not, my favourite characters, he is the one I find most relatable and in my opinion he is also one of the most realistic characters in the show. Without him I'm not sure how I would see the show considering that 2/3 of the protagonists have literally no character.

Honestly, I can't think of any that had such a drastic change. Off the top of my head, there was Glenn Radars from Akashic Records, who I still don't really like. His opinion did shift a little throughout the series, albeit barely. There's also Gilgamesh from the Fate series, but that was more of a shift from liking to hating to "liking to hate." There's also Akko from LWA, who annoyed me for a while, but grew on me (still not outright loving though).

Probably meruem from hxh, because I remember hating him and wanting him to die, when I watched the show for the first time. But when he actually died I was crying my eyes out. This is somewhat true for all hxh villains but it was the most extreme with him.

YES. I always wanted to scream at him and tell to CALM THE HELL DOWN. He looked like on the verge of becoming a villain.
But I stopped hating him in the first season when he cried in front of Deku and declared he was only just starting. I admired that part of him

Tooru Oikawa from Haikyuu. It was more of a dislike because of his personality, but I grew to eventually love him in this weird "You're an idiot sometimes, but I love you either way" sort of way if that makes any sense lol.

While hate might be too strong a word for it I did dislike Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop when she was first introduced for be so self-centered.
Later when she joined the crew of the Bebop I learned to appreciate the new dynamic she added to the group but I still didn't care for her too much as a character.
Then over time as I learned more about her backstory and came to understand her better, I started to see her as being as compelling a character as the rest of the main cast by the time I finished the series.
Upon revisiting it many times, I've only come to love her character more as one that's entertaining, interesting and relatable.
Now I consider her to be my favorite anime character.

Meruem from hxh, he was very controlling but I love it when characters seem tough but actually have a soft spot and a weakness.
Also, Nero Vanetti (91 days) He ended up being a pretty cool and interesting guy.

For the moment, I can only think of Kyouko from Madoka★Magica. At first, I didn't like how arrogant and bratty she acted towards others but once I learned about her backstory and how she cared (in her own way) for Sayaka, I ended up loving her character as well as her overall "tough" personality.
