I think New Vegas was better as an rpg. It had better reply value, better factions, you could do what ever you wanted. But then...I've put almost 500 hours into fallout 4 so it must of done something right. I don't like the voice actor of the main character and the factions are pretty shit. The Railroad are just a crap version of The Institute and The Minutemen are fake. That being said, the gameplay was nice.

New Vegas was much better than 4, it's widely agreed on as the best Fallout game of them all.
Though we are parted,

I should hear the sound
Of the pine trees growing there,
I'll come back again to you.

In terms of story and the rpg element then definitely New Vegas but gameplay goes to Fallout 4. Environment and music are subjective.

New Vegas is much better than Fallout 4 for sure. Heck, even vanilla Fallout 3 is superior to Fallout 4.

I don't think you can even disarm with vats on Fallout 4. Sometimes it even feels like they nerfed vats as well.

New Vegas has more personality in the first ten minutes than 4 has in the entire game.

And as an rpg it's uncomparable

I didn't care much four 4.

I literally never heard that. I thought the widely acclaimed one was Fallout 2 (I prefer the first).

I think people bash Fallout 4 a little too much.
It was definitely enjoyable, I had a lot of fun with it.

Regardless, Fallout New Vegas is definitely the best in the whole series, so it's hardly a comparison.

What really, REALLY bothered me a lot was the terrible dialog Wheel. I wrote about it in another website, but I can't stand the whole "1- Yes 2- No(Yes) 3-Sarcastic Yes 4-Tell me more about X" thing they had going for it in this game in comparison. Graphically and gameplaywise is better and I will argue the whole base building deal is fun, but everything else is a downgrade in comparison to New Vegas, which once again, I agree is the best one in the series.

That being said, I don't think New Vegas was that good either. The combat wasn't engaging or entertaining, the quests rely too much on stats checks for you to attempt different ways to complete the quest instead of leaving it up to your imagination or allowing you different ways to complete it regardless of the path you made like better roreplaying games (Gothic 2, for example) and the quests and the lack of content prior to reaching New Vegas itself is daunting and makes the game have an extremely boring beginning. I'm not really hiding the fact that if it wasn't because people keep saying it was one of the best RPGs on the market I would've dropped it way before actually finishing the game.

The quality does improve later on, but is still really lackluster, even if it's a solid Western RPG overall.

Theres not even a close call between the 2, new vegas is just lightyears above 4 in just about every way. The only thing 4 has above it is slightly more visual variety and technically better gunplay at the expense of any real personal playstyle and general rpg mechanics, but the shooting is technically better.

4 should of just went all the way with being a shooter if it was going to dumb things down this much, the way it went it basically just put itself directly in comparison with games like stalker which completely and utterly destroys fallout 4 in every way from a gameplay department

its a toss up between the two games, I see far more love for new vegas overall but i think that's cause 2 is largely underplayed.

@JizzyHitler Dunno, I'm with @Sh4kun here, I find the gameplay of Fallout 3 and New Vegas absolutely horrible and quickly got bored of shooting weak-ass peashooters at bugged hitboxes while collecting nuts, bolts and cans Oo

I'm going to get flak for this, but yes...and no.

New Vegas was everything the modern Fallout games should be, as it was done by most of the team behind Fallout and Fallout 2 (and i've been with the series since 2).

That said, it has glaringly obvious hardware limitations. Power armor was finally handled the way it should be in 4. 4 also has the best combat mechanics since 3. What needs to happen is either Fallout 5, or another spinoff, done by the NV team, with 4's engine.

People dont really play fallout for the gameplay mechanics, they are just a backdrop for the role playing stuff behind it. Even the older fallout games were pretty bare bones in the gameplay department for a tactical rpg especially 1.

people like new vegas cause of the world, satirical writing, branching paths, juggling of factions, and general ability to just go fuck around and do some really crazy stuff thanks to the smart use of branching side quests and ability to kill any character at any time regardless of whether they are plot relevant (like mr house) and the game will just morph to that decision.

@JizzyHitler Hmmmm. I'll never forget the first Fallout because I think it's one of the best written piece of entertainment ever, I'll never forget F3 for Megaton or its [Speech 100] "Autodestruct please"; but I must admit I totally forgot every second of New Vegas. It just slipped around my brain and left no particular impression at all.

I'll disagree about the combat bit tho, big time. I remember New Vegas being quite combat-oriented, it's not exactly Deus Ex or Kingdom Come where you have tons of choices. Nothing feels like shooting a rocket through a window and seeing it explode against invisible hitboxes, right against your face.

I enjoyed Fallout 4 and New Vegas for very different reasons. I liked playing Fallout 4 when I was just going around exploring stuff, as it does have a fun gameplay loop (that imo does get a little old unfortunately). I enjoyed New Vegas for the interesting stories and world-building a lot more than the plot in Fallout 4, though I ultimately preferred New Vegas to Fallout 4 when push came to shove.

new vegas had no more combat than the other games and most missions both story and not could be talked through, 4 was the only fallout game particularly combat heavy cause most confrontations ended in shootouts, the choices was just who to shoot.

I played both games, and liked New Vegas better. The overall feel was better, too. That's just me, though.
