Am a sucker for tragedy, more so than any other genres. So I wanted to know what all others found the most tragic anime they have ever watched. The necessary criteria for this is:

1) The show should deal on a majority with instances like deaths, relationship problems, family issues, living in fear, desperation to stay alive, trying to correct a costly mistake, trying to change something in your life while making sacrifices along the way which shakes you up

2) At the very least, you must have felt a lingering sadness for sometime even after you finished watching it

Please mention your own experience of an anime bringing you on the verge of tears. (Ofc, popular anime such as Clannad, Your Lie in April dont count, since we already know much about them)
Re:Zero is a good one with the type of anime you are looking for, dont get fooled by the colorful animation, through the end of episode 1 you will understand why everyone says its a tragic anime, also i've seen that you havent watched Tokyo Ghoul, the season 1 of tokyo ghoul is also kind of tragic, and it also has a lot of psychological horror to it if you are interested in that

Maybe Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume? I felt really sad after watching it.

As several others have mentioned, Texhnolyze. It gave me depression for 3 weeks...

I wouldn't call it depression personally but it felt like a part of me was ripped out my inner being. The lethargic pacing is a smokescreen for what happens later, no way the plot becomes coherent had it been rushed which I attribute to great directing. The ending for me was contentious but acceptable at the same time, it was hinted beforehand. The nihilism is strong with this one and the ending just poured misery on top of that. That is one weird analogy but I assumed you winged it.

Post-anime depression for two weeks - this is one those shows that takes a lot of time to reflect on. It was on my mind throughout my summer vacation. A lot of pondering was done to "figure it out" which made for a great puzzle.

I have watched Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume. The thought of a robot diligently serving humans and taking pride in it made me think of slavery with an even worse condition.. you see your masters as good people. As I saw the ending, I was on the verge of tears, not because of the death of a robot, but because of the utter selfishness of humanity in creating sentient beings in the first place just to make money or make things easy for themselves.

Plastic memories, despite some of its outrageously bad attempts at comedy, showed me something even darker. That humans would create robots of sentience, give them a limited lifespan, and make them aware of it. I wonder how those same humans would fare if their lifespan was dictated like it and controlled as such.

Sorry abt the rant but I felt deeply sad over these two anime, especially considering we may face that reality in the future. It feels no different from murder.

Best ending line in anime history = "My name is Saiki Kusuo. I am a psychic."

Nobody mentioned Legend of Galactic Heroes yet. It may be overlooked because of the main theme, but it does contain probably the most dysfunctional and tragic relationships I've yet seen in anime (in addition to loads and loads of other tragedy). By that I mean the relationship between admiral Reuenthal and Baroness von Kohlrausch.

It's the anime that produced the immortal quote "You may have killed millions of people, but at least you made me happy." (quote unrelated to the previously mentioned romance).

'Akame ga Kill' left me in bad shape for a couple of days.
Re:Zero was also pretty harsh.

How is 'Overlord' tragic? Like, only 4 semi-main characters died, and Ains totally crushed the person who did it, so.....they've been avenged, I guess?

The tragic part is how Overlord sucks as a show.

Agreed. I was pretty shaken after finishing the manga and still after watching the movie.

Definitely Grave of Fireflies. It leaves you empty except for a sense of sorrow. I still avoid rewatching it to not feel those emotions. Other then that, I don't remember other memorable ones.

Wolf's Rain is one of the saddest anime I've watched. After the last few episodes I was just in shock, and I still think about the ending all the time.

Gungrave also had a pretty tragic ending, from what I can remember.

The backstory of truth about Itachi hit so hard I cried with tissues and I cried the same in the Naruto Shippuden episode 'I will love you always' when Itachi was about to be released from reanimation jutsu and he for the first time touched
Sasuke's head to his and said 'from now on na matter what you do or what you become I will always love you forever' that was like the most emotional anime scene of my life to me .

Naruto franchise is one of the few shows that have made me cry including violet evergarden,a silent voice, your name(almost teared up) and can I eat your pancreas
