I found that most anime with teen/protagonist is always the same cliche . Young weak hero(but turn out to be very powerful) like Deku,Asta,Luffy,Naruto and Gon dreaming big or the young hero fighting for their friends like Ichigo and Natsu or the hero that get all the girls like Koyomi and Kirito. But when looking at some adult protagonist like Gintoki, Kenshin, Spike, Hei , Saitama and Alucard , I find them to be surprising fun and entertaining.
Anime with adult protagonists might be a comparatively smaller category, but do they boast some unique and compelling story lines that are far from cliche than the teen/kid protagonist?

Youthful protagonists are easier to write because of a number of reasons--reasons that lead to the sameyness you're noticing.

1) The situation usually places them in the same location--school. As has been said by many others, it is a situation that requires little explanation or background for viewers or writers to completely understand and flesh out.

2) Youthful protagonists are most likely going to have hopes and dreams. They're also more mobile, less tied-down by life and responsibilities. Their motivations are going to be easier to develop and explore.

Older folks have experienced these things and usually don't have as much in the way of hopes or dreams but more practical desires that are less interesting--see children off to college or career, plan for retirement, live long enough to see it, don't get fired, pay bills on time. They're often tied down, stationary, and can't adventure, take risks, or do anything daring because they have too much to lose.

3) You can excuse a lot of character stupidity on the dumbness of being young. Young people make really stupid mistakes all the time. I know I did when I was young. It is harder to excuse character stupidity when they're 35 and should know better.

There is no objective fact to say that adult protagonist are better than youngers ones, here are characters who are better than the ones you mentioned

Most Jojo main characters

https://myanimelist.net/character/729/Yuusuke_Urameshi
https://myanimelist.net/character/18061/Erin

But as mentioned above, there are reasons for doing so.

Haven't watched that many anime with adult protagonist but instead of saying unique, they're more mature so some may find them more interesting than younger characters. The one I really like is Kiritsugu and definitely made the anime great. Kiritsugu's definitely more interesting than Shirou for me.

Don't care about age
Liking said character is the only thing that matters. When looking my two favourite main characters they have a slightly big age gap between them with Soushi being 22 and Yuji being 16

so because of that I can't imagine age being a factor of likability for myself. But I can understand age being relevant in terms of setting which can make the plot more interesting like how I preferred Nodame Cantabile over White Album 2 and Sound of Euphonium because their goals in life felt more important and grand in that show than the other two which bored me to death.

Adult protagonists tend to be more down-to-Earth, while being unique and charismatic.
Even the typical ones like Tenma from Monster feel more real despite being every-day men, like most harem protagonists.

Teen protagonists either fit a generic archetype and development (Chise from Ancient Magus's Bride), or are bland.

I think it depends on the type of show you watch,
I prefer the OG Naruto over the adult one,
And natsu and ichigo are adults too.

What you wanted to say was, are shows aimed at late teens(early adults) better than the one aimed at kids?
The answer would depend on the person watching not the quality or age of the characters.

Anyway" young "character that i like:

I think battle shonen protagonists and harem protagonists are not good examples.

There are good and bad adult MCs, same goes with teenager MCs.
Can't say that one of them is better than the other.

Tenma was a good MC imo, alucard is also a good MC.

As for teens, yuusuke and edward alric were really likeable.

sorry but I have to burst a bubble here.

For the younger ones you have mentionned, they may fall under the underdog catagory (Even though Gon and Luffy don't fit in it because Luffy was not weak and Gon does not have big dreams), They are very different from one another.

For me , despite that I'm a teenager but I've always loved the adult protagonists for several reasons. Adults in anime don't talk loudly or scream nonsensically , as they are totally calm and cool and that's so mature. facing critical problems in real life require a high demand of being calm to choose your choice wisely.

Most of Adults in anime have dark past (ex: Gintoki , Yato , Levi , Guts etc .. ) and that's what shapes their character. Which despite all of these bad stuffs happened to them , they are still living looking for purposes or trying to reach their goal. they also have some realistic reasons to fight and sacrifice themselves. Unlike the majority of Shounen animes , u can find that adults don't fight just for "friends" or so.

Adults in anime also have more experience , skills and also powerful then teen protagonists. You can see sometimes the desperate sight in their eyes that describe literally "How is the real life be like". Not the childish big eyes that teens have. Well, they also look hotter sometimes xD

but still I love some teen characters in anime ofc :D but in general I adore the adults more as they are more intriguing.

I always like the side characters more than the main character most of the time, so I don't really care about the MC's age.
