Hi ! I'm unsure if I should start reading light novels / manga? I'm not sure if it's my type of thing, I love anime however I feel like manga and light novels are very different. Before watching anime for the first time I prejudged it and assumed I would hate it, I was very wrong. I watched my first 15-20 anime's in (Dub) before watching Plastic Memories in (Sub) since there wasn't a (Dub) for the anime; again I thought I would hate subtitles but now I only watch anime in (Sub) and I love it! What sites can I go to read manga + light novels translated in English? Recommendations of manga + light novels for my first read? Your opinion of manga + light novels? Etc. |

Yes you should. I got into manga recently and I am enjoying it a lot, more even when I do with anime. You can read it with your own pace and it's fun making voice for the characters :> |

I've been through the same process. At the start I didn't like that mangas are in black and white but you'll get used to it and I was in general not that keen on reading, however I decided to give it a try since I was fed up with watching animes that never adapted the whole series. So I suggest you give it a try As for sites on manga I use mostly kissmanga.com or the manga rock app if I'm reading on my phone. When it comes to light novels I use Baka tsuki or the site where it is available. Or I purchase the ones I want to read. I recommend you read Boku no Hero Academia and Berserk manga and Spice and Wolf light novel and Mushoku Tensei(web novel). Hope that answers your questions xd |

I can give you some starter pack for both Manga and Light Novels and Web Novels. As much as I want you to read Novels, It would be better for you to read mangas first, then proceed to Light Novel if you want to explore for more genres that are only exclusive to Novels. The advantage of being a Manga reader is that they are far superior to anime when it comes to story telling, same for the Light novel, and accessing manga is easier. Another good reason to read Mangas is there's a lot of them which were not adapted with superior story than most animes, in rare cases, some animes surpasses the manga. You can read at Kissmanga with their different proxies or just buy the mangas and support the author. For me the disadvantage was you might read some Mangas that will become an anime, so you're basically spoiled if you want to watch the adaptation, and it's more frustrating to see some animes not being loyal to their manga counter parts, which is more common than being better than the manga itself. Now, for the Light Novels and Web Novels, there's a difference to both of them, Light Novels are the officially published Books, while Web Novels are your hobbyist novels. Light novels are quality novels, that's a fact. Only few people who has a decent list of Light Novels like the users from Light Novels Alliance like Zefyris and Alencia. The advantage is you can read the progression of the completed promotional animes like Oda Nobuna or Mondachi Tachi. If there's problem in reading Light novels, then it would be the hard to access volumes of them, you have to buy them which I support, but as a free user, it's quite a problem, pirating them is the only option. For the Web Novels, there's a site that host their links which is the NovelUpdates, they have a great interface and organize novel listing, searching in NovelUpdates is far better than searching here in MAL when it comes to Novels. The Novel Updates has a big amount of novel around asia, and the major Countries who are producing them are China, Japan and Korea, and china has the biggest web novel list like Qidan. The biggest problem in web novels are they are not edited and they don't have the quality like the novels, though there's a lot of hidden gems which is hard to find. Another Problem in Web Novels is that Most Chinese are trash, Japanese are repetitive, and Koreans fails in ending their novels, since all of them are written by Hobbyist. But the biggest problem was the Reviews of the users in Novel Updates, they are unregulated, so you have to ask some people if you truly want to read quality novels since the score was too biased. Another biggest problem was the Translators, they are unpredictable, sometimes they are consistent, sometimes they stop translating, you have to rely on them for the translated chapters, without them, the story that you're reading will not progress, and it's either you rely on machine translation or learn the language yourself. Ok since you're asking for Some Recs Here MANGA: (read Right to Left if you're reading a MANGA) (checked your list, you're a newbie/casual so preferably light) One Punch-Man - Action Yotsubato! - Slice of Life Horimiya - Romance Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - comedy Ran to Haiiro no Sekai - Romance Onani Master Kurosawa - kinda like death note in different way Grand Blue - comedy Hinamatsuri - comedy Nukoduke! - Kawaii Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai - Harem Light Novels: if you want to try, check the club "Light Novels Alliance" or Novel Updates Web Novels: if you want to try, check Novel Updates, or Check my Profile. |

I too thought that i wouldn't like manga at the beginning.. and now i fucking love it. I only started reading manga at like march this year. I would recommend reading first a classic. My first one was berserk. I started with it because i've heard lots of great things about the manga and that all the anime adaptions can't get close to it. Now i understand and agree. So definitely recommed berserk, especially when you've saw the anime. Also, attack on titan, was my second manga. I was first shocked that the artstyle difference would be so different. Compared to berserk it was horrible. But i was so intro the story that the artstyle didn't matter at all anymore. |

A lot of people have been asking this question and my stance remains the same. You should. Why? Light novels : It allows you to be more imaginative in reading and taking the story and everything is up for your interpretations and with only several visual illustrations to help, that just makes it even more interesting. And the way LN explained every nook and cranny about something is fun, at least for me. Manga : If your anime has manga already running in a magazine, you should read it. Manga contains more content and several intriguing story arcs that might have been adapted out of the anime. LN sites is actually a bit hard to come by, but you can always go to novelupdates.com and check the light novel category. There's plenty of Manga sites, and my personal favourite is Mangainn and Mangahere. |

that's a weird question. If you like reading comic and you enjoyed some anime, you 'll probably like manga. If you enjoy reading fiction novels, then you can read japanese novels, including LN labels which are, after all, simply novels with a different name. |

I've honestly gotten into manga even more lately. Especially since there is so many stories that'll never be adapted to anime. Try oneshots or small complete series to test your mileage. |

Yes, light novels is the most sophisticated medium in the world. Has the narrative complexity of novels without being boring. Has fantastic imagery and subtelty like aneem. Mangas are good too, but Light Novels and Visual Novels are the medium of enlightenment. |

Also, I find it pretty funny and ironic that you complain about adaptations not being faithful to the manga in the same paragraph where you complain that 'you're basically spoiled' if you read the manga first. |

Fuck, my grammar... my bad, got careless about that let me correct that one, Anime is the most popular standard medium of the three, and there's a lot of animes being adapted from mangas and light novels. But for today's standard, the Anime Counterparts of Manga and Light Novel will be always inferior especially when it comes to Plot and Characters. There's a lot of them which are not faithful to the material, and worst it becomes a wish fulfillment anime, another reason why people prefers to read than to watch. That said, there are some rare cases that the Anime surpasses the original material like Haikyuu or Seven Deadly Sins. |

Actually, I had a similar situation to you. First manga I started reading properly was Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari or Billy Bat I believe, and I used to read at most like 2 or 3 chapters a day cause i'd get bored. Eventually I started really enjoying it and picked up the pace. Shamefully, I still haven't finished Billy Bat (it's been like a year or two that it's been on hold) but i've been reading loads of other manga. I even relived One Piece and i'm up to date with the manga. There's something about it that pulls me in harder than anime, I think I might just be burnt out of it (Haven't watched anime properly in a solid year) but I still enjoy reading manga when I have time. It's definitely worth starting, if you read a short manga you can gage whether you really enjoy it or not :) |

Sigh. Just because YOU or people you know prefer to read doesn't mean everyone does, once again you're going off with all these generalizations and providing no evidence whatsoever. youseiki said: Anime is the most popular standard medium of the three, and there's a lot of animes being adapted from mangas and light novels. You once again say anime will always be inferior when it comes to plot and characters (according to 'today's standard', god knows what that means), but then at the same time you mention yourself that anime is the most popular, so I think it's evident here what the majority thinks what's superior regardless of you wanting to agree with them or not. |

@youseiki I personally don't think one of the other is superior or inferior, really, at least not as general terms. I just think that the way you were talking about anime and manga in those terms can create some elitist ideas in the audience that aren't really needed since different viewers will have different personal standards of quality. And I didn't really want you to give up in the discussion either, just sort of wanted to see what kind of evidence you'd show to prove your point. |

Hmm, I already quit because after thinking some time, you're the correct one, seeing quality animes from original materials like "Attack on Titan" and "SAO" proves your statement, While some stories like "Berserk" or "Kingdom" gets shitty animation, proves my statement, either I'm still the wrong one. |

Specific Anime can surpass their Manga counterpart, yes, but this changes nothing about manga and novels being a superior medium when it comes to storytelling specifically. There is more than storytelling to enjoy and care about, especially in anime, and there's also the fact that sometimes the scenarist for the anime was just far better at its job than his/her manga/novel counterpart. Still doesn't change the fact that anime just cannot compete in story telling with books. x) |

Words can convey things that a visual based medium will have a hard time to. In reverse, words can also avoid to convey something that is supposed to not be conveyed yet (for things like mystery or banboozling the reader by making think that the novel said something it didn't) , which is something a visual medium will always struggle with. Also, books are quite free in the amount of pages they can have to convey all that needs to be conveyed, whereas anime is struggling with a very restrictive format (series usually have to fit with complete cours (12-13, or 24-26, but not really something in between, and so on) which makes many anime either cut important content or in reverse drag out some scenes, as well as adding fillers scenes just to fill up the cour completely. And so on. To tell a story, words will always have much more freedom than a visual based medium like movies or anime have. Doesn't mean that anime doesn't have specific advantages. Great soundtracks can really help in emotional scene, great seiyuu can really makes conversations alive. I think the most interesting part of using anime to tell a story isn't the visual part but the sound part I talked above, btw. Just... not for storytelling itself. |

I think the most interesting part of using anime to tell a story isn't the visual part but the sound part I talked above, btw. Just... not for storytelling itself. I disagree. I think both mediums (and any type of media, to be honest) have certain types of stories that can benefit greatly from using that particular medium and not another. In certain cases there are some things that are better conveyed visually than with words, words can fairly inexact and change meaning over time, but the meaning of visual representation can have a harder time shifting. You mention for example mystery stories in written form, in a book you would have a description, sure, but a visual medium can present clues more subtly, for example or if you're listening to audio dramas there can be a better mood. Maybe you have a more traditional meaning of storytelling or narrative in mind, but I just think that this idea of 'superior' or 'inferior' regarding to media is ridiculous. Storytelling includes everything the medium can offer, it's not just the plot or the events, if you have a character and the voice can be distinctly 'heard', that's part of storytelling, too, whether it's in written form or visual or whatever. I checked your profile and I would say you have a bit more experience with both mediums than me (which shocks me a little considering your opinion) but if it's true that manga is superior, then why do they get anime adaptations? If the best possible way the story could have been told already was, then why adapt it to another medium? Of course, when it's adapted, specially into a limited medium like anime, sometimes things have to be changed, that's why it's called an adaptation. It doesn't mean necessarily the story was ruined or that now it's all wrong, it's just different. If the audience likes it better or more it's a discussion for another time, I'd say, but in short what I'm trying to say is that neither is inferior or superior, they're just different and better suited to showcase different aspects of storytelling. |

go read the manga of the anime that you liked(if it has one). this way you will feel more connected and it will be easier to understand the manga as the story will be similar. the first manga i read was tokyo ghoul. i finished the anime first and realized that its not the ending the manga still continues. after reading tokyo ghoul i got myself introduced and hooked into the vast world of manga and its one of the best decision i've ever took in my life lol. anime seems a waste now ;p |

Storytelling is the core element of the text medium, particularly novel, whereas many elements are coalesced to form an anime. Manga though sits somewhere between the two extremes. It's not that the anime does not have the potential to rival manga or LN, but its format place a lot of constrains and require skills of high complexity to tie all elements into one coherent whole. Once fine-tune perfectly, it redefines the experience into a whole new level, like transitioning from a 2-dimension to a 3-dimension. As storytelling is NOT the one priority, but one of the many for the anime, this logically dilute the focus and most of the time, reduce the quality of storytelling. So, it's really the responsibility of the director and people at the helm of the anime production. Btw, the average amount of anything is yeah, AVERAGE, so the huge amount of anime in average cannot rival the original medium in terms of story telling. Though, there are always outliers which outperform the norms made by highly talented people. But talent is not average, otherwise it's not talent right? |

up to you, light novel are completely different then reading a manga. Honestly sometimes the light novel can be very good depends on how good the author is and the translator is (both of them have to be good) otherwise you get a bad experience reading. But you need to beware of one thing that is very frequently occuring in the manga world. Manga going on hiatus. Most of the manga I read are all on Hiatus, this is very annoying, and you might not get any updates for many many months. So, if you can handle such a thing go ahead. |
