| It's supposed to be a cute fang. It can look cute when done correctly, but a lot of artists these days will throw a single fang onto every single main character they draw, and it's getting old very quickly. |

| Per wikipedia: "In Japan, yaeba (八重歯) is human teeth, especially upper canines, with an uncommonly fang-like appearance. In Japan it is perceived as a sign of youthfulness." (I don't perceive that kind of design as being merely aesthetic though, as it seems to come with feisty personalities.) This is also mentioned in the tvtropes article. I'd guess that having merely one fang visible is to avoid vampire connotations. |

Though I have to say crooked teeth with slightly protruding canines in real life are kinda cute. I never understood the straight pearly white teeth thing, it's brings way too much attention to someone's mouth. I've got a straight set of teeth with a slight natural yellow tinge, wouldn't really have it any other way. Though my canines on the small side, about level with my other teeth, so a slightly larger set of canines would be nice because I've always found tearing smaller pieces of meat from larger ones difficult. In the case of anime, the choice to animate 1 canine rather than 2, as OP has posted is probably because of the sinister implications that got associated with 2 canines because vampires. |
