Facing people who does not approve manga or anime

I'm from Mexico, and back when Pokemon started airing on TV, some parents and religious organizations began complaining because they claimed that the show had satanic features. For example, one of the accusations was that "pikachu" meant "a thousand times stronger than God". On a similar note, Ranma 1/2 was a subject of discussion as well, for some people at least, because, according to them, "it promoted homosexuality" (all of this happened in the mid nineties).
Recently, in may, anime and manga fans gathered, some doing cosplay, to perform what they called an "otaku march" down the streets of Mexico City. I found out about it on facebook (I don't live there), through one of those news sites. I bring this up because most of the comments on facebook were really mean, like "that explains why downtown smelled like sweat", or "the biggest gathering of virgins I have ever seen".
Some people mock or humiliate anime and manga fans due to some prejudices they have against them.
Have you ever faced someone like that? How did you handled the situation?Have you tried to change their opinion, or did you just let them be?

Answer: you don't.

How can you argue with someone that doesn't follow logic? Even if you want to, you can't. So it's better to leave them fighting alone and spend your time doing valuable and rewarding things, this is specially true for religious sects.

As for the ordinary fellow that just rants about otakus being virgins and whatnot, there's also no point in attempting to face them, for they are just bullies with a lot of free time on their hands.

The "Pokemon is evil" thing wasn't just Mexico; the US was doing it too. My aunt and uncle bought into it, but luckily my own parents didn't (although my mom thought anime in general was evil for entirely different reasons). I'm curious if other countries went through similar things.

I don't generally try to change people's minds, but if a debate comes up, I may try to promote keeping an open mind. It never really works, so I'm not sure why I bother, but I'm not very good with closed-minded people in the first place. I don't push very hard and agree to disagree. This honestly doesn't come up very much, though. I'm 28, and other people I know don't really care what I like. I make friendships with non-anime fans, and when they come to my place and see my anime figure collection, they usually just say it looks nice and they are impressed, and move on. It may just be to be nice, but there is no outward judgment going on and it doesn't affect my relationships with them.

The best thing to do is ignore it. If someone doesn't like what you like and are mean about it, don't let them know that they are bothering you (even if they are). Some people are just bullies, after all. Most people grow up and get over it, but not everyone does. Also, extreme religious people will always have a problem with something. If it's not Pikachu being the devil or video games making kids violent, something else will always come up.

They were just making fun from the situation, I would do jokes like that myself.

Just look at the LoL community for example, calling themselves faggots. They find it funny. You only get offended if you want to. Otakus have the stereotype of being virgins, it's just how it is. And it makes perfect statistical sense. If you look at the virgin percentage of a group of weebs and compare them to normies of the same age, you'll see a huge difference. Maybe the same can be said about sweat - maybe.

Oh damn, you must have it hard there. Like where I'm from, it's pretty widely accepted, like there are even anime conventions around here and what not, and nobody really cares what you do, and that goes for anime too, so I've never really encountered anybody who's deliberately showed hate for anime/manga, for that matter. Not sure how I'd react if society itself (here) looked down on anime/manga, and then I'd be like one of the minorities. That wouldn't stop me, but I'd probably just keep it to myself lmao

Agree with this wholeheartedly, once you get older, what people think doesn't matter as much

There will always be people who don't like something you like for close minded reasons. Generally, I ignore it and don't even try to convince them otherwise. If it's someone I'm close to, I'll protest a little but don't argue that much. The majority of the people around me don't know what anime is or think it's weird and perverted. Just don't bother with it. Not worth your time.

In a general sense; it's very difficult to change someone's opinions. People who hold heavily negative connotations of someone or something and aren't open-minded to the introduction of differing view points will not have any means to change their own view on the subject. It's like saying:

"Sandwiches taste awful, I'll never eat a Sandwich."
"Well, have you ever even had one?"
"No, they are awful."

You see the dilemma? Most people are going to dismiss anime and manga as a childish, or rugged form of media without even taking a chance to barely understand what anime is and has to offer. So, given that; I don't suggest trying to change their opinion unless they are clearly open-minded about it. Rather, accept that they have their opinions; and that you aren't obligated to get along with them - and move on. They are the ones missing out, in my opinion; given that anime promotes such fantastic motives that no other form of media does.

Don't try to change their interests unless they are willing, and don't let them change yours. Part of being human is to live in the way that you feel fits. If you have something you love; then love it.

You dont. That is why you need to have a facade when facing normies or strangers. They can be damaging if you mind them too much.

All I have to say is, you're 29 and you're whining that people made fun of anime fans. Grow the fuck up.

Side note: Why the fuck even have an "otaku march"? Are "otaku" in Mexico that desperate for attention that they'd disrupt the lives of ordinary citizens? And you wonder why the stereotypes exist when this kind of shit just reinforces it.

There will always be people who will hate you for whatever you do or say.
Just give them a giant middle finger and just do your own thing.

The pokemon and Ranma 1/2 thing is just silly, backwards thinking most religious people tend to do. They see satan is everything.

Sorry to say, sort of laughed at the "Biggest gathering of virgins" lol. Weebs going out and about it public doesn't exactly promote anime in a good way to the uninitiated common folks. Just yesterday there were lots of weebs in lousy cosplays at Oslo central station acting like retards and it made me cringe so bad.

Honestly I just think people are getting more hateful either that or now that i'm older ive realized how shitty a lot of people are. I would just ignore it because out of those shitty people there has to be someone that is kindhearted. Also the internet is becoming like 95% trolls sadly.

Just want to point out he said he found out about it on facebook. He didn't go to the march. Just calm down there is no need to be that angry no need to lash out man.

Its pointless to try to change their opinion on something that they have already decided is bad in their eyes unless they are reasonable or an open minded person. However, if they were reasonable or open minded then this issue wouldn't have come up in the first place.

Why do you think I was lashing out or being angry? Swearing, if that's where you're getting you assumptions of my attitude from, doesn't denote anger. It's just how I fucking talk. Also where did I state he attended it? I am capable of reading, thank you.

Did I sound like I was whining? Really? Well, my bad, that was not my intention at all! I only wanted to know your real or hypothetical reaction when talking to some of the people I described.
And about the reason behind the "otaku march", I really don't know, it surprised me when I found out
