hmmmmm probs under a comment section or iin a forum.

i found you on a forum where u were asking for sci-fi stuff like blame!/texhnolyze. and u were saying that u were going to watch ergo proxy. and that forum was like in 2019, so i thought 'lemme ask him, what did azeew think of it after like 2 years'.

yeah there is a very thin line between pretentious and shallow, and actually complex. i think of it as, something being pretentious gives like an answer. like a blatant one would be like 'the meaning of life is...' while actually complex and deep would be raising the question and asking the reader to form their own answer. and in pretentious stuff, there is no substance to it.

but idk why i even asked bout ergo proxy, i havent even watched it yet xD

Edit: Since you don't have all arcs marked as read, there are some spoilers for the fifth arc in the paragraph on the story progression.

Thank you for your interrest^^ Yes, BobRossTheMan seemed a little offended. For Umineko, I'm still reading, so my verdict isn't final on that. But there are indeed many aspects that don't suite my taste.

I really loved Higurashi, partly because of nostalgia, partly because of the massive edge factor but also because each arc on it's own was an interresting experience. With Umineko it seems like it was mostly written for the mystery fandom but the individual arcs don't really trigger my interrest. It feels like going through a few hundred chapters just to gather bits of the overall mystery. The characters are mostly superficial without any likable qualities. Maria is quite cool and Natsuhi gets better over time though.

My next issue might be my own fault because I'm too dumb to grasp the whole picture, but I started the 6th arc and still haven't read a comprehensible explanation of what can be trusted and what might be a fabrication aside from the red truth. So I might have spent my last few weeks reading fantasies of an abstract entity that claims to be a witch but might also be a production of the protagonists undermind in a meta verse and none of it happened in the story, wich would piss me off pretty much (I know the visual representation would be way less misleading in the VN format). On the other hand, having only the red truth for each storyline would be way too abstract (like, there is actually nothing known of what happened, just that there was a closed room entity where certain people died). So I would assume, that atleast what the 'piece' Battler witnessed is actually truth. Given the huge character cast and the manga format, looking back I have no idea of what the piece Battler witnessed and what not. Taking it a step further, there is actually no guarantee that the red truth is not a lie by Beatrice and that she actually sticks to Knox' laws. If this was actually a mystery meant to be solved along the way by the reader (and given how abstract the whole storytelling is), I would have wanted to have at least the rules of the game and the criteria for trusted information from the beginning. Now I spent frustrating hours of reading without having a clue what I'm actually looking at.

Looking at the game itself, I'm not really satisfied with the progression. At first it was about Battler denying the existence of witches and Beatrice trying to convince him in order to manifest herself. Many of Battlers arguments seemed very forced, given that he believed to be in a meta world that was build by the witch he didn't believe in (the only way I can think of for him to explain that would be that he's dreaming and everything is a production of his own fantasy). Then they were somehow entrapped by other witches while it was introduced through Ange that the world of the witches is basically an escape fantasy that is real, as long as you believe in it, but cannot affect the real world. Then Beatrice somehow lost her will to fight and the game was taken over and suddenly it went from 'you need to proof that the murders weren't done by magic' to 'as long as theres a human suspect, no one believes in the witch'. Also the part of Erika taping every window and door shut seems pretty forced. And then Beatrice dies and Battler realizes he fell in love while she tortured his family over and over and tries to revive her to keep his promise of defeating later on. All in all this progression gave me a raised eyebrow many times.

And finally: The experience of having a 'battle of witts' represented as cute anime girls such as the 7 sins and the inquisitors shooting arrows and swords at each other is propably one of the most clichee anime things ever (and not in a good way)^^ So since there is the possibility that I was terribly mislead the entire time and there actually is a reasonable explanation for my points of criticism, I'll finish reading and will look at a lot of reddit explanations after that. But so far, I'm not pleased by the experience.

Nice to see Umineko retaining some semblance of popularity around here.

Monogatari series gets even better once you sum everything up ;D best thing about scrambled anime like Kara no Kyoukai.
Kaiton Nov 16, 2017 11:31 AM
Yeah, not having voice acting is a shame (it is more felt its absence on the SoL moments), but funnily enough you get used to since the OST and fighting system makes up for it in terms of immersion. I see, that is good to hear, since RGD is one of those novels that really needs more attention from VN readers, since the content is quite good. Hope you have a good time with DI! ^^

and the bad anime adaptation didnt help as well (especially umineko), PH anime was decent until the few last ep, good ost too. And well, in here PH got translated, I got all 24 volumes of it :D

Yap, it is almost Umineko tier and the italian songs are even better here. My favourite song btw:

It depends if you are up for the plot of RGD, which is quite different than the usual mystery/horror/fantasy genres of Umineko and Higurashi – focus more on politics, economics, gangsters/mafia and ofc gun battles. Story-wise RGD is probably the most solid work of Ryukishi in terms of writing and pacing. As for characters they are nowhere near Umineko tier (since besides not being as big of a novel, the story pattern is different than Umineko, so the main cast is constantly changing per season - RGD´s plot is about a story being told in the past, so each season focus on a different year and each year has characters who have more spotlight than others) , but they are equally entertaining and well developed through the story.
Also, a friendly reminder that like Higurashi and Umineko, RGD is a sound novel. Contrary to the others it didn´t receive the same lvl of exposure, so yeah, it is still unvoiced and without upgraded versions.

It is understandable. In my case, it was the same but since things like those are not an impeditive, I am glad that I give it a chance since I could enjoy Higurashi for the right reasons.
Kaiton Nov 15, 2017 2:16 PM
Yap, it makes it even better if you are reading it and listening to the OST at the same time lol. If you love the Umineko OST, you should check some of the tracks on youtube of Rose Guns Days and Higurashi (or consider playing the novels in the future), since they are works from the same creators and some of its tracks have the same vibe. This one for instance, totally resembles Hope from Umineko...
Kaiton Nov 15, 2017 1:10 PM
I see. Still pretty impressive of you having read Umineko already, since normally people start with different novels. If you want to talk about Dies Irae as you progress on the novel, feel free to do so.

Yeah, Umineko is great, especially after the combined experience of completing the manga after the novel. Even to this day I am still obsessed with its OST lol.

BR?
Kaiton Nov 15, 2017 12:10 PM
I see. Shame that your motivation is not strong atm, still the other two routes are substantial better.

Out of curiosity, since you don´t seem to have a VNDB profile (at least advertised on MAL), which VNs have you read so far? And which are your favourites?
Kaiton Nov 15, 2017 10:08 AM
Thanks.

Dies Irae kind of resembles Fate (don’t know if you have read the F/SN VN, but yeah the last route in DI is basically Heavens Feel all over again) in terms of battle royal setting and being a character driven story (its strongest point, especially in terms of antagonists), so you will probably enjoy it once it picks up.
Nice to meet another Umineko fan! ^^

Yeah, I am already used to people commenting on that. Still glad to see people reacting like you instead of getting buthurt over something basic like scores xD.
