      Are anime clubs weird/cringe-y?

| Am I the only one that thinks having a or joining an anime club is sus? I cringe/laugh when I see a kid walking down the hallway with a shirt with Rem on it. I mean I get that you like anime and don't get me wrong, I do too, but going that far is a bit too much. I prefer to express my interests in anime/manga online. I mean, anime is just a cringe-y/awkward thing to talk about IRL so wearing a Rem shirt to school isn't going to help you on to social hierarchy. BTW I ended up talking to the kid about his shirt and told him I haven't seen RE: Zero yet, he immediately told me to watch it as it's quote on quote, "The best show to come out." I guess he was RE fanboy but eh idrc, he was chill but the shirt threw me off. I haven't talked to him since but the guy seemed chill and to be honest, he doesn't look like the type of person to be into anime, kid had a fade and was wearing joggers (IMO looked athletic). Apparently, he's in the anime club for our highschool and also plays soccer for our school too so he ends up missing 70% of club meetings. I cannot be the only one that thinks joining the anime club will get you roasted, he even said that he got flamed by his friends multiple times for joining. This is more or less directed at HS students or people that have been in school with an anime club. (I don't hate the club, I just think it's awkward and weird to join an "Anime Club", I mean, come on, the name just throws you off. |

| Anytime I think about an anime club I physically cringe. Almost all the people that join them are weird antisocial weebs, where I am that's the case anyway. |

| I personally think it'd be hilarious to talk in a Japanese-English mix and reference animes that no one has heard of. |

I went inside the clubroom one time as a dare because some of my friends dared me to go in there and act like a fake who only watches Nar-OOO-to (emphasis on a RU/ROOO because that's how all the people who don't know how to pronounce it correctly do it) and oh my god, so many of them were trying to speak Japanese it was fucking CRINGE as shit. I walked in and asked for the teacher, as soon as I did, some kid in the back spoke in broken Japanese; "Nani? Nani atenda yo/なに、 なにあてんだよ" and I was actually about to fucking die laughing. My friend who dared me literally had to jog out of the room because he started to fuckin laugh. |

Those narooto kids are the only kids who like anime in my school. It may be cringey, but it's just hilarious to me. |

| Where I am, they tend to masquerade as the "Japanese Cultural Society", with like Japanese culture and tea ceremonies. There are some people there who learn Japanese and what not, but we all know they are just mostly people who watch anime. Yeah we also mostly refer to it as "the weeb club" in a joking manner. |

| Thank God clubs are not a thing here, i'd definitely see some weird "elements" from my old high-school class frequenting it. Personally speaking, no, i'm VERY closed about my anime interest with other people of my age in real life, or at least, i'm not the one who starts talking about it during casual conversations. |

| If there was an anime club, I would join it. I mean, why not? Its hobby like anything else. Its not right to be ashamed of what you like. And about that shirt? I personally would not wear it, because I am shy, but if someone wants to wear it, way to go! He has my support for actually supportiing his hobby instead of you complaining about it anonymously on the internet. |

| I answered the third choice, but I took it more from the perspective that I'm a retard weeb and would join an anime club to meet other retard weebs. Wasn't into anime back in high school, but if I was, I would've joined. But no, you won't catch me out wearing a Rem shirt. That's just sad... |

| what's worse, being in an anime club or the fact that he has a 'rem' shirt on instead of an 'emilia' shirt loool But in all seriousness, I can't believe that we're still at that point where we r so concerned about what other strangers r doing (not necessarily talking abt u OP).. like damn this is high school not middle school. and even then, like all he's doing is wearing an anime shirt lol. A t-shirt with a graphic design (but me personally, i don't own any anime clothing, let alone wear them out in public). It's not like he's wearing a Naruto headband or anything. That's like me judging someone else for wearing a marvel shirt, like r3l@x. Like at my high school, nobody gaf what u did/do, as long as you didn't do something that gains attention lol. I'm surprised you guys have an anime club tho too. |

Anyone who takes roasts seriously needs to relax and chill out, I get what you mean though. At our school, all the kids know each other so there isn't much beef, all the roasting is in good fun. |

Nothing, there was no issue from the beginning, I was just looking for opinions. But anyways, I personally don't think they're tooooo bad. Like a lot of the anime clubs that I've ever heard of (there's none where I am from) were pretty toxic, so I'd probably stay away from those, but I mean you never really know until you give it a shot lol. I personally don't think I'd ever join one tho. Not my kinda thing. |

Backstory was for comedic reasons and a bit of an example on what the kids in the club are like (not all the kids in that club wear anime apparel). This one guy was NOT the only one who has worn shirts/hoodies like that in the club, one time a kid wore a hoodie with the word Hentai on it and some Japanese characters, the teachers and staff didn't know what hentai was so they didn't apprehend him or make him change due to dress code violation. If only they knew. The kids in the club were friendly though, they weren't pricks or arrogant or anything about their "holy knowledge" of anime (that's one of the guys called it) but they did occasionally force their opinions of anime and manga on me, repeatedly telling to go watch this show or that show. That gets annoying but other than that, they were very laid back. |

Are you telling me you've never once in your life looked at someone and, based on their appearance, said something along the lines of, "Oh, I bet that person does this or that," or "I bet they're this type of person." Of course I do all the time but once I get to know that person, that mentality disappears. I do judge based on looks and appearances but getting to know someone is also very important, if I judge someone and I'm wrong about them, it's fine, there's nothing wrong with that, that's how humans work, how we socialize. If you judge only based on behavior, good for you. Also, what does drugs have to do with this? I too am against drug use, thought not strictly, I oppose it, a lot of kids at my high-school use drugs and use code-names to label them. I stay away from drinking, drugs, and anything related to that as I get easily addicted, that's why I partake in activities I like, such as gaming, anime, and basketball. I can get addicted to those three hobbies and not worry about going to jail or severely damaging my mental/physical health. |

I mentioned drugs because we were talking about judging people and its one of my judging criteria, if the person is drug addict or not. I myself do not use drugs, drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, but I do accept if someone drinks or smokes AS LONG AS it is not too much and as long as they are legal of age. |

| Yes they are. I was considering one when I first got there. Then I quickly realized that the one at my high school had a group that spent their lunch in akatsuki cloaks. That's just too much for me. I joined some black kids only club instead. |

| Are anime clubs really a thing in American high schools? How does that even get approved? Anyway, I guess it's nice that people get to socialize and find friends this way. Personally, I would never join a club like that, since discussing anime in real life always felt too awkward for me. |

| As much as I would probably die laughing at an anime club, I attribute their desire to socialize and be more in-tune with their hobbies as similar to me immersing myself in cars. Honestly, who cares. It's cringe, but I don't mind the whole ordeal. If you followed them home just to find that they had display cases full of figures and bookshelves stacked to the top with manga, it would be no different from following me home just to find out that I have multiple cars, a rack full of tools and spare parts everywhere including my living room. One person is having fun with their hobby, likewise I'm having fun with mine. The only real difference between a dedicated anime fan and a dedicated car enthusiast is the attention we draw. If I took any one of my cars out for a drive, it would turn heads, get compliments, and people would #instagram that shit and say "goals." Now if an anime fan were to dawn their Rem shirts and waifu backpacks, it would turn heads, but also attract bullies and roast squads. Which I think is kinda sad that people can get ostracized for their hobbies. Let them enjoy them. I fucking hate furries because they have a tendency to be pretentious, but I also respect that they want to dress up as their high school mascot. A lot of us in more mature car communities hear so much inaccuracy from new members that Honda owners will roast them for not doing their research, but it's different when you're talking to an MR2 or Porsche community. We'll offer support, constructive criticism, and proper advice in hopes that one day they'll become more informed members. That's why there's really nothing wrong with those anime clubs. It just discourages people from wanting to know more when others want to tell them off or point and laugh. Well, that's been bearing down on my mind. Partially because it's 4 AM here and there's no way I'm going back to sleep it looks like. adorablez said: And I am also strictly against drug use, so that too.
