Well, I will for sure miss these Iwatobi guys. My first ever subbed anime was original Free! and it's so hard to split from it

In my opinion it was perfect the end. In fact, I felt sad, because of view the crying Nagisa and Rei, but everything after the competition was optimistic. By the way, I think Eternal Summer is better than 1st season. Relation between Haru and Rin was something special and... ohmygawd I'm blushing now XD Yaoi hidden agenda tho. Although every fight scenes in Free were a little too dramatic (and no homo ofcourse), but it's certain charm, isn't it?

Ahh such a good and nostalgic ending :') though I thought they would have gotten a higher place in nationals. I suppose not though, 6th is still good.
Also who became the Iwatobi captain (Or are Rei and Nagisa both co captains?)

The first season did a pretty good job imo of combining the right amount of drama with the right amount of competition and sporting, but more importantly the drama remained more consistent and actually meshed well with the rest of the show. This season just seemed to want to burst at the seams with drama though. There was so many different lines of drama, drama between Sousuke and Rin, Sousuke and Haru. Haru and Makoto and i guess Haru with practically everyone else on the team ...the Nagisa drama with his family, Rei with feeling like he really isn't a true swimmer, and probably some others. I think it just took on being a slice of life far too much with sports as a topping, which in all honesty wouldn't have been all that bad if they just focused on a few drama lines and made them well rounded rather than having so much that pretty much didn't mesh together at all.

A step back from season 1 imo, still a decent watch though. 6/10

I went all, "WTF?" after finding out that they only got 6th place.

It feels more like a slice of life instead of a sports anime. I think they went a little too overboard with the melodrama. Some episodes feel like fillers instead of being important to the actual story.

The animation is great, as expected from KyoAni. The soundtrack is good, same goes for the OP and ED.

I don't think I would watch it again, but it's pretty enjoyable. It's not the best, but it's not the worst either. A decent show, 7/10

Rewatched the entire season in dubbed and I kinda regret it because dub fucking sucks. The seiyuu really make up 90% of the Anime. Alas, now I am even more hype for my 3rd watch where I watch the Japanese dub again.

I have a bit mixed feelings about the ending.
It's great that the group stayed friends, but I wished to see them swimming together every now and then. It's weird that Haru was also in Australia(?), like he and Rin can't be away from each other. Of course that can't keep on forever.

Makoto is adorable with glasses. <3
And I wanted to know what happened to Sosuke. Why they didn't tell anything.

What? Wait. No. Something is not right.

I rewatched the episode because of you (I'm not complaining, thank you :D), and Haru is in Australia on a competition, against Rin. The rest of the time, he's with Makoto in Tokyo. You can see them together, eating and studying. That ship has sailed.

Btw, you HAVE TO watch the ova. YOU HAVE TO.
It doesn't take place after the series, but it's fanservice galore.

can I spoil you with a lil' screenshot from the ova?

I got the feeling that Haru was in Japan for quite a while (seeing Makoto and so on) and then went to Australia. Rin wanted to be part of the team in Australia, so perhaps Haru was only in a competition over there. Who knows. Didn't get the feeling he would stay there.

Cute ending to an uneven series. I liked the fact they only got 6th place in the relay; didn't think they were that good to begin with. It's only Haru who has any real potential. I didn't like Rin much last season (too angry) but he was my favourite this season. <3 Sousuke's presence was kind of unnecessary, tbh. I feel like he was only introduced as a character so the fujoshi could pair Rin up with someone.

I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that Rin and Haru were on the same team together, for Japan. So technically they are against each other but they're still on the same team so they work together now.

Wait. What? Where? When?
Don't sink my ships! :D
I must have missed something (runs to rewatch the episode for the umpteenth time).

Ummm. No? I don't see where is confirmed that Haru and Rin are on the same team. They show Tokyo (I think, from the tower), then they show Makoto studying in the university, then they show Haru "studying" in a pool, then they show some ads written in japanese (at least I hope that that is japanese), then they show Haru and Mako eating dinner. So they are at least both in Japan and spend the evenings together (cough).

After this they show Nagisa, Rei and Gou recruting new members for the club.

Then they show a bridge (which I think is supposed to be the Sydney Harbour Bridge... in Sydney... Australia), and we see Rin training. And before this we see Sousuke looking over the sea, letting us know that Rin is somewhere far away (from him).

Rin and Haru, meet at the end, at the competition, competing against each other. One trained in Japan, the other trained in Australia. I don't think they are on the same team. And even if Rin was training in Australia and competing for Japan, they don't work together.

Well, I was talking about the anime (after all, this is an anime only discussion). I didn't read the novels, didn't research forums or tumblr posts (which still need a verifiable source). And, as I said, even if they "work" together, they don't even train together. I'm not even sure you can call that "working together" actually... rather they work towards the same goal... in different countries... on different continents (ok, I'll stop here :D)

I finished it a few hours ago and it says a lot that I'm still thinking about it.
I'm really unhappy with the ending. The last two episodes are the worst out of the whole season, at least for me, and I'm not sure I liked it more than season 1.
I definitely would have but the Haru drama kind of ruined it for me because him going pro just didn't sit right with me and his friends behaviour regarding that matter even less.
But I'm glad that Haru went to Tokyo with Makoto, I just can't imagine the two being separated from each other, it would have been cruel (Haru seems to need him a lot so yeha, I'm happy it turned out like this).
Sousuke was by far my favourite, his story was the most serious and mature one compared to the more or less unnecessary drama the others had to battle (Haru not included because an existential crisis is a hard thing to go through).
I just liked him a lot, maybe because he was the only one I could relate to on some level (damaged shoulder, no sport ever again for the both of us) *lol
The fanservice was okay, I don't mind nice abs on animated people, but the whole shipping thing had gone too far from time to time. It was way overboard and sometimes carried out rather poorly, and some episodes were more queer baiting than anything else.
So, I'm overall a bit disappointing, mainly with the last two episodes/the ending as a whole.

Everything about this episode was so perfect, I definitely regret not finishing this sooner. Of course, I'm a bit sad it's over, and I won't see my babies again, but the happiness I feel right now surpasses this sadness of mine.

Almost wanted to cry with Rei and Nagisa-bby ;w; Haruka smiling was too beautifuru.

Please no 3rd season, the ending was too well done.

Good thing that I don't give a shit about what people says about certain Anime. In this case, many people keeps on saying that Free! is fucking gay, but I didn't give a shit about what they are saying, and I am glad I did, cause this Anime is beautiful to me, really. Their friendship is <3
KyoAni can still make a season 3. Showing Iwatobi's new club members, Sousuke's recovery, Rin and Haru's journey to pro, and Makoto's studying.
Well, I will be waiting~ Thank you ^^

I realize this post is a couple years old (I'm late to the party - just watched both seasons for the first time recently), but I feel exactly the same way.
Beautiful. Both seasons were beautiful.
The friendship, the bromance, the camaraderie, the self-discovery.. all of it was beautiful.

I wanted to hold Nagi when he cried on the pier. I may have petted the screen and said, "oh, my sweet baby, it's going to be okay!"
.. I may have also been crying at the time. I don't know what it is about Nagisa crying, but I always cry when he does. Sweet baby breaks my heart when he sobs.

They announced something new for Free!, but no details yet. I guess we'll have to wait to find out what it is. My personal theory is that it is a third season or an OVA showing where everyone is now, pretty much as you described (as opposed to another story about their past like "starting days" was).. but who knows. I do hope that's what it is though.

I'll be waiting too =D
In the meantime.. I'm going to miss my boys so bad. <3

Season 2 was entertaining, but season 1 was better.

I did like Sousuke.  I also liked how Rin was in season 2, more relaxed.

Season 1 drama was much better.  Season 1 drama was very engaging with its drama and characters.

I guess I'm just not a big fan of the whole "what are you going to do in the future?" theme.

Also, Nagisa, Rei, Nitori, the female teacher, the coach, and the former captain's younger brother were pretty much meaningless in this season 2.

Glad to see Haru back and with a new attitude. Him talking to his team and apologizing to Makoto was really good to see :) Plus the relay of course! Too bad we didn't get to see Samezuka, but that's what you get when you are the rival school :P I liked the new ED and seeing everyone in the "future" was good as well, like the new swim teams and Makoto going to college and of course, Rin and Haru ... especially that very last shot with them swimming together again :3 I could have done without all the remembering and summary of their time together, but maybe that's just because I wasn't watching while it was airing so everything was still pretty fresh in my memory lol :P

So overall, I thought this was a good sequel with a surprisingly realistic plot about plans and attitude towards the future as you graduate from high school. I actually didn't expect that to be such a big part of the show but I thought it led to some decent character development, especially for Haru. Very good animation and sound and voice acting of course, as can be expected, with enjoyable characters (Rin FTW) and some nice new additions as well (even though they weren't THAT big a part in the show). Definitely enjoyable to watch and I thought the ending fit really well too. 8/10

Great work guys, its a pity they had to seperate but i guess they will meeting again judging the way they buried those letters. I hope to see them grown and still passionate about swimming. I see Haruka has found his dream to win thanks to Rin my favorite character for taking him to Australia to broaden his mind. I still can't forget at episode 9 when he dropped out of the freestyle race but I forgave him after Rin opened his eyes.

I will miss this series passion and friendship, but most of all the animation especially the eye game they did wonders along with the background water. 8/10.

The ending made me feel a little emotional! It was kind of bittersweet for me, the goodbye and all... It's very relatable growing up and fearing drifting apart from your friends when you all take separate paths, but the little box for them to dig up when they all meet again seems like such a wholesome idea! Seems like a little reminder to keep in touch or to at least never forget their friendship and have a little goal to look forward to one day. I really liked that.

The ending was so emotional.

Rei and Nagisa crying, the relay race, the swim club gets new members were the best part of the episode.

This season have more drama than S1 and more screen time for Haru and Nagisa. Also, Sousuke was a great addition to the cast. Maybe my opinion is a bit unpopular but I think that this season is an improvement to the already good S1. I'm going to miss this show. 9/10 for the anime.

Honestly, I don't know why the second season was better than the first. In terms of content, I liked the number of versatile shots we got to experience with all the characters. I'm sad that we didn't get to explore more of Makoto's. Rin got a very good development and I'm glad, I enjoyed his growth very much and his relationship with Sosuke was a pleasure to watch! I really don't like the fact that it seems like it goes back to Haru--all the characters are basically used as plot gimmicks to boost the overall development of Haru, which is fine...but I just wish they didn't have to develop Haru at the stake of the others. But Haru's lashing out and voicing his thoughts to his friends OOMFF that was refreshing and I liked that. Overall, I enjoyed the series. Definitely found Makoto and Haru, Rei and Nagisa, Sosuke and Rin's relationship really well explored!

In the end, Rin and Haru will never be able to race on the same team, which makes me sad. And Makoto will never reach Haru...but at least there is hope that Sosuke will return back to swimming ;___;

The rollercoaster of emotions and excitement! I can see why this series is so popular, but honestly, it doesn't deserve (some of) the flack reviews it received.

It's pleasant to see Haru showing more facial expressions in this episode than during the whole first season.

As a whole, it was a decent final episode. I really liked the first part but the second one felt really rushed due to the little time it had to develop the competition... it just didn't feel impactful in the slightest. Not to mention that it was a bit disappointing that Samezuka didn't received any focus despite being in the Nationals as well.

Anyways... overall and aside from just one or two "mediocre" episodes, this season was way better than the first one. The characters development and drama was better handled and Sousuke, as a new addition to the cast, ended up being a very good one. 7/10

P.S.: On a side note, I must say I'm gonna miss Gou a lot since it seems the third season will be focused especially on Haru and Makoto at university.

This was nice season feels like slight improvement from the previous in some moments but still does not push forward much with kept1 using similar constant flashback techinique and new character to develop plot and the dialogues can be very cringy at times. I think overall series could benefit having adapted from manga than as original.

This episode alone deserves 9/10 filled with emotions and memories for the boys, hope to see Sosuke in the 3rd Season.

Great show overall could have been a 8 if they won the nationals but with those other three not possible, so speaking theoretically like Rei says rirontekini impossible.

Cute hallucinations, lol. I especially liked the penguins.

I still don't understand Haruka. He should have either some stronger reasoning and better explanation of his future goals and why exactly he decided to care about scores now or some other dream that would feel more reasonable in itself. As it is the whole thing looks like a drama for the sake of drama with somewhat shallow development.

Well, at least it was still somehow better than the first season or maybe I just got used to the characters.
Very lighthearted overall and uplifting ending, I liked that.

This anime was too much too good.
I loved everything in Free! the emotions I had for this season are endless. I liked it way too much really!

Let's talk about the episode:

It was a very good episode but it was missing something. The first part was too good, the second part a little bit less, it could have put more emotions in the race, it went by super fast I think. There are as many people stronger than them ??! because they arrived only 6th and I'm very disappointed of that, I would have liked a top 1 or a top 3 minimum but it's not a big deal. I think that Rei, Makoto, Nagisa lack a little bit of level but I like them anyway !

What a way to end the show.

Haru's speech to his teammates at first...we've kind of just been waiting (really patiently, mind) for him to come around this whole season. Phew.

Then, another testament as to why Makoto is the sweetest, talking about his dreams.

Nagisa and that appetite...

I didn't really appreciate the flashbacks as it took up time in the final ep.
Go Nitori!

All in all, a pretty epic ending!

It was a nice end to the season but I felt like season 1's ending was better. It was a very emotional episode and even made me cry! Probably a 7/10 or 8/10

This was a pretty much perfect finale. That reminiscing part was really emotional. Poor Rei and Nagisa.

Well, they didn't win the competition, but they had so much fun together. That's the most important thing. :)

Makoto found his dream. I think he's a perfect person to teach those kids to swim.

Overall, this was almost as good as the first season. I think the first season gave me a little more excitement than this one.

🤣 @ Nagisa going overboard while ordering food at the Restaurant, hey he's still growing and needs all the food he can get.

Besides, their Teacher did say she was paying for it, so why not? 😂 😂 and the way she takes the Menu off of Nagisa hands LMAO. And No lobster! Nagisa Awww.... 🤣🤣

🤣🤣 wtf?! 🤣🤣 This what I love about this show, they keep it realistic & down to earth.
Me every time I hear the word "reparations": 🤣🤣🤣

Quite the journey from last season starting the club to now national tournament winners with them all having found their dreams.
