Dear Straight Fudanshi: Are you sure you’re not gay/queer?

I know this seems asshole-ish of me to question other’s sexuality but after re-watching Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu I became even more puzzled. Why is it that some straight men like to watch/read BL?

Compared to its sister genre, Yuri, the BL market is rich on its overly explicit scenes and which is why this genre is highly dominated by horny fangirls and (gay?) fanboys. On the other hand, a lot of Yuri has the characteristics of class-S, Onee-sama or even moe trope where its homosexuality is sort of questioned. Which is why there’s a good amount of Yuri lovers who are hetero girls (chill y’all, I know there are hardcore Yuri out there, I’ve read Maka-Maka... 4 times).

I mean liking BL is cool, but to call yourself a Fudanshi means that you’re very much hardcore? Fudanshi & BL lovers, I honestly would like to know your view on this!

But again, in the end of the day, it’s nobody else’s business to judge their preferences. This question was pretty rude of me to ask anyway.

Does it matter though? To me it's like watching videos about a game that you don't play yourself and have no interest in playing either. You just enjoy watching it.

A guy reading a bunch of BL, but not being gay doesn't really surprise me.

I'm a lesbian myself but I still watch/read yaoi every now and then. So your point is?

So only the tag makes it gay? You can watch something not knowing and then say no homo? Is that how it work?

Yeah. Just trying on a few new username ideas right now. eh. I am Jonouchi Katsuya yeah. I say so on my profile. I am not even hiding. Probably will change my username again next month to try my other name I had in mind. And then make a final choice. I just don't know if I want "misspelled name" or "sexy" name or to go back to people just not even knowing what character I was referencing.... Jonouchi Katsuya is Joey Wheeler's Japanese name. But like heck anyone read the manga or watched Yugioh subbed.

I get why some straight dudes like to see a blossoming relationship on BL, it's adorable, but I'm not sure how they still enjoy seeing dudes fu*king when das really gay. I just want to see the logic behind it really

If Fujoshi uses BL for fap material, how about hetero guys?

Yaoi is often full of fluff just like shoujo, a lot of guys like shoujo romances so I don't really find it weird or gay that some of them may also like yaoi.

Hello fellow gay (^^)

That shouldn't matter. There are girls who like shounen, which is made for boys, and then there are guys who like shoujo, which is made for girls. There could be plenty of reasons as to why a guy might like a BL series beyond being gay.

Have you noticed the guys orgasm kinda like girls? Least how we imagine ourselves to in our fantasies? You know, when I read Yuri, sometimes, I am a little disappointed they never want to show an O face. And that is always what I want. Yaoi is all about that O face to me. They do look like girls. I think that is halfway the point to me. To be the best boy- which is a girl orgasm speaking. Because girls are better at orgasms anyway. Why not bless the boys with ours?

Thankfully my secondary interest in sad gay will make me like many Yuri works as well as shonen ai works. lol.

That's true! I think Yuri has the tendency to make the girls look like purified virgins (because of the stupid ideology "no cock, no losing virginity"). This is why I go to BL: because it's very gay and they take the sex scenes seriously.
The BL characters are very pretty ;; which really fucks up with my sexuality haha

Fudanshi also just include all men who like yaoi and not just exclusively bara. Particularly those exclusively into yaoi. My husband doesn't like bara, is into yaoi (but also likes a lot of other porn as well). He likes the more feminine men.

eh. And if you are in any yaoi group, you will have 1 guy to 5 girls? Which though seems small it adds up in lager groups. and I have been in groups which were started by guys which had more a 50/50 ratio because that was the people they knew. Granted most of them were gay or bisexual. But eh. I don't think it matters. Men in the fandom do exist absolutely.

There are a lot more Fujos in general not on this website than on because there are so many exclusive websites to them to isolate themselves from others.

I would love so much for them to have them orgasm just the same. and be so naughty and want it. I like slutty characters so much that I find in yaoi. And I just cant find it really in Yuri so far. But I am going to keep reading and see if I find anything. But it has been so far not my thing. XD I think so far, what I have liked most has been historical and meanspirited.

I read this one just now about a girl falling for a trans girl... and all they did was hold hands all night. And I was like... :/ Kay. Like really now. Gender bender section has been the literal most toss up section there is for me. Sometimes I can enjoy it and sometimes I am like omg where did all these landmines come from?

Sorry been reading manga pretty heavily lately. And while Yuri could stand to be a little less PC- not every girl is so sweet and dainty. Gender Bender could stand to be a little more at times (maybe it is the translators? I have suggested).

Gosh dream yuri stories to me would be like the girls I loved. Goth girls. Smoker girls. Always bisexual and sexually knowledgeable (or your thought so because you were 14 yo) And you pursue this girl BECAUSE she is more knowing than other girls. And you are attracted because she is not pure. and you wish to be like her and confident. And don't care if you are called a slut too and find it so brave she is out and such? Like... this is very much what is was for me. moth to a flame kind of feeling. And they call you names like "innocent" and "sweet heart" and "spazz" and you wish they wouldn't and would respect your desires to be fully sexual and whole woman like they are.

This.... this is what I want from Yuri so bad. that lust of pure girl feeling. Which never seems to really get captured like it does in this ecchi in a really comedic way I might add- B-gata H-kei. Which was literally me in middle school and high school only not just towards a single guy... towards like... more than a few people. omg... I was terrible. so embarrassing. I chilled the fuck out by junior year and realized I would never get laid acting like that.

It does for me. But only if they are Voyeurs. And get off on the taboo. Similar thing happens for not gay guys participating in gay things but getting off because they are exhibitionists getting off on taboo. Example of an actor who gets off on kissing men but is not gay: Ewan McGregor. And in terms of power trips- dominating other men can be a power fantasy.

Being turned on from fetish =/= homosexuality or bisexuality. It just isnt the same.

Voyeurism is a fetish on it's own. You are born gay or bisexual. It really depends WHY you like it. Do you like it because it is "naughty" , because you are a peeper? because you grew up in a gay hating household? (btw I noticed most hetero fudanshis grew up in gay hating households but are not really gay hating themselves)

Like is it the fantasy of dominating another man or actually wanting to be with a man? These are two different things. The fantasy of being watched is different than the fantasy of worried you will get caught.

A lot of fudanshis did it for thrill of being caught. Because liking gay things is worse than liking tentacle porn I guess. Which is a form of exhibitionism. Watching people be gay is voyeurism. It is a neato combo.

I kind of see what you mean but it doesn't make sense to me. I can find Zac Efron attractive sure, but I can't possibly get off to him or anything because I'm not gay/bi. It's hard to believe someone can be turned on just for the sake of seeing something forbidden.

In that case, what does that make someone who likes watching humans have sex with animals just because its forbidden or pedophilia, just because its forbidden? If they really are turned on by seeing forbidden love then why is it only limited to the male gender?

@Blarey @Rotton-Girl It made me wonder, why do you guys assume that BL turns them on? There's really a lot of people that don't get aroused by 2d drawings, be it yaoi, yuri or whatever. And the question was about BL in general, not every BL has sex scenes, it's not just porn you know.

I was only answering the question of yaoi itself. And mostly because I know some people in the community on the page specific Fujo pages and Facebook and convention.... and mostly BDSM community who are like this. I think it is quality insight I think?

Shonen ai is different. It is just romance to me. haha. I don't think it makes anyone any sexuality.

I was only trying to answer why someone might not identify that way and ways which someone may do queer things while not technically being gay. Most guys I know who do it habutually though, will go by bisexual but will state exactly in what way. Because they don't want to hurt the other person. Because there is a different between being only fetishistically interested person and actually interested.

Why would they be? You'd definitely be gay if you watched BL for arousal.

They don't necessarily have to be attached to men to like BL. I'm not attracted to little kids despite liking loli-like characters. It's just cute in a non-sexual way.
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Well, I know in my house it was men specifically who were disparaged most for their sexual orientation. So I really can't answer that other than my own personal experience with homophobia and how it played out. I think a lot of what creates this specific kind had to have it taboo in the first place. Ask yourself honestly which is more taboo- Yuri or yaoi and you know the answer. If caught with hentai his friends could laugh it off. But if caught with yaoi, what would really happen? How homophobic are his friends? Likely what created this situation in the first place is growing up in a homophobic environment.

I know for me, what had a profound effect on me was the 2004 Bush vs Kerry Election but also 1998 Mathew Shepard's Death. A lot of gay issues were talked about from 1998 and onward that I remember. but it wasn't until 2003 I knew what gay really was and I finally knew why my mom had said a boy deserved to die for flaunting his lifestyle. And then it just really made me not understand more...

And the stuff on TV was so cruel. But the stuff my dad was saying about homos shouldn't need marriage was even worse to me... Running around with limp wrists and calling each other faggot wasn't to make fun of lesbians but men... but bisexuals, those bitches are sluts.

and I had a crush on my friend...

and I was so alone. And I had Gravitation. And that was it. Gay was so naughty I should die for it. and it became the most romantic thing. #fuck

Sure it does make sense, it's an interesting insight too and possible explanation for why some 'no-homo' guys may really get turned on by yaoi. But that discussion kinda made it sound like BL is just porn for horny fangirls and guys in denial xD So I wanted to make sure you realize that BL can be viewed as just a romance.

I don't think they are in denial at all! :( I am sorry if I ruined things. A lot of people have explained their hentai stuff to me as well and it is for much the same reasons. So this very much makes sense to me on a deep level.

Liking something for the romance or the story is different. Like Twittering Birds Never Fly, despite the graphic sex it in , has an awesome story worthy of reading. I can see just about anyone enjoying Yuri on Ice or Gravitation. I knew a group of guys at my local con who would cosplay Free! to pick up girls (epecially since that was just slash). lol. Which is honestly the most hetero thing I could ever think of doing. But being a fudanshi means getting turned on. Or welled up with warm feelings much like moe fans.

Being married to one helps. He knows a lot of guys in the fandom because he himself is a guy and that pulls them out of the woodwork. So I get to hear from him a lot and I know his friends.

Since my husband dresses up as characters and such, there are people who go up to him at convention too. so yeah. My husband draws in a lot of fundanshi to talk to. So I have talked to more than the average amount. Straight fudanshi are VERY rare. I will say that. And there are none without a fetish or 5. Gay fudanshi are different obviously.

Let me put it this way...

I'm a guy.

I only get aroused by straight porn.

I have a mental checklist of female pornstars I seek out when browsing porn.

I still enjoyed watching Doukyuusei.

The idea of a guy watching or even constantly seeking BL, with explicit scenes or otherwise, is not outside of the realms of possibility.

I dunno, women can enjoy girls love just fine (In fact most Shuojo ai ai magazines are aimed at girls) so I guess the opposite is also possible?

@Rotton-Girl
Gay fudanshi are different obviously.

Well of course, they are 'straight' forward enough to understand why they join BL culture.

Well, I like BL, but I recently discovered that I'm bisexual.

However, I'm not attracted to "manly men." I prefer guys to look somewhat feminine, and have their bangs/fringe brushed forward, covering their forehead, because visible foreheads are gross, regardless of what gender you are.

But you need to remember that Yuri, in general, is less explicit than Yaoi. Yuri is heavily focused on moe, etc. And if we're going by its traditional demographic, both Yuri and yaoi are targetted to women.

I'm talking about straight fudanshi who enjoys straight up r-18 BL

This thread reminds me of the angry reactions on Youtube when the first yaoi AMVs started to appear. Lots of people accusing the posters they thought were (naturally) gay males of being 'faggots'. It was very funny to see that after some understood that the poster was female, they would still still call her 'gay'.
I suppose it reassures them somewhere, thinking that liking a fetish they hate and despise means that you have to be a 'deviant' IRL. Then they can define their 'kind' as the 'normal' one.

But to me, for an heterosexual male to be able to like yaoi only means that he's more open minded than a lot.
A fudanshi friend of mine (the only I know) who also drew graphic hentai, told me one day:

'Porn is porn and on top of all, that shit is hilarious''

That's the right way to see it.

I guess we are kinda the same. I really like bishounen but I'm gay.
It trips me out sometimes because when I go out irl, men don't look like pretty anime boys. And that was why I realised I'm gay. I like BL because of its androgynous characters reminds me of butch females sometimes

According to my own experience, terms like 'fujoshi' and 'fudanshi' are often used even when it comes to people who show even a slight interest in BL/things considered gay. I was called a fujoshi just for saying that I like Yuri on Ice or for having 1 BL manga in favorites, even though I like all kinds of romances equally as long as I find the story good. People are overusing it a lot so I wouldn't be sure that it's a common definition that a 'fudanshi'/'fujoshi' is someone who gets turned on by BL, even though it sounds more sensible.

Btw, the idea of doing a Free! cosplay just to pick up girls sounds hilarious, lmao

I really hate that they have become so overused. There is a difference between the Otome fandom, the Slash fandom, and the Fujoshi fandom. There is even a difference between "in it for romance" and "turned on by gay".

And fujoshi for women actually includes in Japan women turned on by Yuri and general lewd material. :/ And most websites and fangroups support people who love both Yuri and yaoi manga lovers. Though always yaoi more because there is so so much more of it. But generally- fujoshi is a "woman of culture" term. haha!

I watch/read it for the romance. I don't view it as fap material.

My definition of a Fujoshi/Fudanshi is when you're so hardcore you want to buy the merch and listen to the cd drama. By going to that definition, I'm no longer a Fujo

Funny story, a straight friend of mine watched love stage just so that he could pick up me and my fujo squad. Also, in the anime con near my place, there was a couple of guys who often wear BL bishounen cosplay to get attention from girls

It is definitely extremely effective! I don't know why more guys don't do it. I am now convinced after seeing how much tail those Free! Guys got that other men are just stupid to not do it.

And I own like... 5 series on DVD... and I have... doubled up on a few of them... and I have manga sets... and I have pins and stickers... and t-shirts... and cosplay for black butler if that counts.

First of all, best type of boys love is the one where one of those boys crossdresses. Okay now that I achieved my daily trap comment quota, back on topic.

That depends on why they like it, do they like it because dudes fucking each other in the ass turn them on? Well they might be gay.

Do they just simply find it cute, or perhaps they are interested in homosexual relations as a topic? In which case, probably no.

Despite liking feminine guys, I find that "traps" are a little too feminine for me, because you can't even visually tell that they're male half the time.

For example, "Rider of Black" is too feminine looking for me, and doesn't appeal to me at all.
