Why do females like yaoi/non-canon gay shipping?

I am a fujoshi. Have always been since I saw that one scene from Mirai Nikki (If you know what I'm talking about lol). But at this point in time, I've discovered that a large majority of the fandom is predominantly female and that most yaoi is made by females for females. Obviously, this does not mean that every female anime fan is a fujoshi but still... why do fujoshis like yaoi?

I have a few untested hypotheses about why this is the case but it's kinda awkward to share them.

I'm actually doing a school thesis on this very topic hahaha...

There is tons of theory of why girls attracted to m/m romances...

I'll go look for it and share it here later.

Anyway, unlike you, I didn't feel a thing for "that" scene in Mirai Nikki. I couldn't recall whether I was already a fujoshi or still normal fangirl by the time I watched Mirai Nikki. But one thing for sure, "that" scene did nothing to me.

(also, the majority of what fandom? Mirai Nikki? or anime in general? Because as far as I know, MAL is dominated by male users. But if you talk about places like Comiket, the ratio is 75% female who attended comiket iirc. I assumed, female otakus are more into that kind of activity (buys stuff, merchs, doujinshis, writing fanfics, etc) while male are more into internet forums etc. Maybe.)

Back on topic:
I'm not sure what make me like m/m so much, and my tendencies to ship non-canon m/m ships in non-BL anime.
I think the basic would be because:
1. Two guys is definitely hotter than one guy (when all reasons failed, we always have this one)
2. No competition, the girl is not good enough, the girl is not to my liking
3. There is many things in guys that make the relationship more interesting and heated. Like their pride, competitiveness, rivalry, etc. This won't happen when it's betwwen hetero pairing right? (is this even make any sense??) Like, sure, there can be competitiveness and pride in a rival relationship between male and female, but it won't be so heated, won't be as heated as m/m? At least that's why I tend to ship two rival character. The tension!
4. I'm one who hates seme/uke dynamic, because the uke always too feminine for me, it's like just chick with dick. I like my ships where both male has seme quality/manly. Because if the uke is feminine, it will defeats the purpose of why I love m/m romance. That's why I hate most shounen-ai and yaoi anime.
5. I'm sure there is many others, since I don't go around shipping all m/m characters, I have preferences and all of them works for all gender not only m/m. I just love relationships that explore deep bonds, in any way and form. And I always found them in m/m more than in het pairings.
6. I also find m/m ships 1000 times cuter than het pairings >///<

HERE: http://www.trickster.org/symposium/symp164.htm
I found the article that might answer your question. I mostly agree with it.

I used to hate labeling myself as fujoshi, been in denial for years, but eventually come to terms with it and found identity in it.

Pretty much this.

I'm a fudanshi, and when it comes to Anime with hot bishounen, I like to imagine that they're all gay.

Same with video games. Take Yuri Lowell from "Tales of Vesperia." It's so easy to imagine him being gay, that I'm surprised that he's not gay. He even looks like a girl.

Why do females like shipping non-gay characters?
-Because they can, I guess.

I also ship most of my favorite female characters with other females who aren't even into girls.

A is programmed to feel attracted to B

A can't tap B
A imagines B + B (+B...∞) scenarios which can still theoretically include A

It's all just a cover-up for their intense infatuation with girls, mate. Think about it, if you're a lesbian, and into the gay, but you don't want to let other people know, BL is a lot easier to explain than GL, right? They're all a bunch of tsunderes is all :D

Well I personally don't label myself as a fujoshi, but I ship mlm couples because I am a LGBT person so LGBT relationships are more 'natural' to me. I ship anything that has chemistry and I don't care if it's straight or homosexual. However, due to the fact I tend to watch more series that are predominantly male cast I tend to ship more mlm couples than straight or wlw.

However back before I knew I was gay and before I grew to hate majority of the fujoshi 'fan base' I liked it because I was bored of seeing straight couples everywhere and low-key because I thought it was, y'know, pretty hot :/

You are sexually attracted to males. Males are good. Double the males, double the good.

It's not fucking hard to figure out.

As for why a lesbian likes yaoi, I don't know. I've only ever met one lesbian online.

Are you old enough to remember seeing the first season of Digimon? If so, do you remember an episode where Matt and Tai got in a fight with each other, and rolled down a hill? My then 11-year old self yelled out to my mom, "Matt and Tai are having sex!" Even though I knew that they really weren't, part of me then wished that they actually were.

And that's how you find out that you like Anime boys.

I feel ya girl!

I used to hate yaoi so much especially in my KHR fangirling time.

Because some pairs are just cute together, they look cute together, you like them both as characters and you like their chemistry. Most of those couples I like are straight (there are also more hints on straight pairings) and some are not? Most are canon or almost canon and some are "crackships". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really can't stand the cheap wannabe-psychology I have read so many times, there were even panels at cons to find the reason behind girls, who like Boys Love.
One reason was jealousy, like: "there is no girl in it and the female audience is more jealous of the girl", "female audience is insecure of themselves etc..."
For many females, it actually seems to be the "two males are better than one"-reason, but that was never my personal reason, honestly.

They are fictive. Getting jealous of a fictive girl, because of an anime character, rly? Rly? XD
Maybe if you are 14 and actually insecure, but almost every teenager on earth is insecure, think. What's their point?

Because straight girls are sexually attracted to men so two men doing dirty things to each other is appealing to them. If they are open and dirty minded enough, super horny and discover yaoi, they turn in to fujoshi.

a) ask some personally
b) google for theories/presentations/papers on the topic?

We have like hour-long presentations about the topic each year at our local convention because for some reason it fascinates people that women can have lewd fantasies just like men -.-

I love yaoi/yuri because I'm a big old gay and anime primarily consists of straight characters, so I get super excited whenever someone with a different sexuality is portrayed.

I'm especially fond of yuri, but finding a good yuri anime that isn't aimed at men/doesn't sexualise the characters is a nightmare.

And I don't really know? I always shipped remus/sirius in HP. Their sexuality is never stated outright. I just love the idea of a strong platonic relationship turning into love because gender doesn't matter anymore.
'I love you because you're you. I'm happy that you're whole. I don't care if there are sides of you that I don't know, or don't like. If that's who you are, that's fine. As long as you're whole, that's enough for me.'-Kouko Kaga

My theory would be that it's similar to how guys sometimes find girl on girl attractive. Like, which would you find hotter, someone of the sex you're attracted to making out with someone of the sex you're not attracted to, or two people of the sex you're attracted to making out? It removes the undesirable part and replaces it with a second of the desireable part.

(Hope that made sense. I feel like it sounded a lot better in my head)

If they care more about the physical part ("A x B is soooooo hot!!" "I want a seme like A-senpai!!"), it's because they're attracted to guys and two is better than one.

If they tend to spend more time thinking about the romantic development ("Can't they just get together already?" "When is the marriage happening??"), it's because they like romance regardless of the gender of the characters. This second type tends to also like yuri/het ships and most of them don't even consider themselves as fujoshi/fudanshi. Which isn't exactly wrong, in my opinion.

Though sometimes there are cases where the fujo in question fit both categories.

(disclaimer: i'm a second type fujo, have been talking to lots of other fujos for years)

I don't know, do you think you ship guys together solely because they're guys? It's kind of complicated when you go beyond having the hots for two guys making out like it's been pointed out here (sex you're attracted to + sex you're attracted to >>> sex you're attracted to + sex you aren't attracted to)
If you're into BL because of the bonds the characters have with each other, maybe that has to do with Japan's culture, which surrounds anime? There, men are put as equal while women take sort of servant roles. Basically, guys have more content to be shipped together, because they're more independent and relevant (and feel more like people)? And girls are simply more interested in shipping characters than boys, probably. I'm generalizing here, but I'm also just throwing assumptions I don't actually believe in.
Other than that, maybe we're the ones making it weird, because, if it's a plausible relationship to happen and the characters have never established their sexuality clearly, then why the hell not?
Oh, I just thought of more. You know how men who spend long periods in all-male environments eventually may engage in sexual relationships with the other men around them? That's why you can't help but ship BL when you've seen dudes share the same space for long, you end up projecting the sexual tension you think it'd normally exist or something? lol Sports anime fit perfectly there, I'd say
I agree with what Shicchi said as well!
(Hope all this makes a bit of sense, at least...)
