It's just a culture difference, I'm sure if Japanese people saw some of the stuff we do they'd think we were the weird ones.

I read some where that Japan doesn't censor any idea. while it does have a lot of weird and fucked up shit, it also creates a lot of creative ideas.

+1. Duh, different cultures view each other in different ways because different cultures naturally conflict against one another. I bet the Japanese look at some of our cultural aspects and think we're weird too.

Because Japan is near and far at the same time. Striving to imitate the West, it manages to achieve an almost uncanny valley tier copy of it, especially in Tokyo and places like that. It feels completely "normal", fully Westernized, at first. This makes Westerners forget that Japan is not (shock and horror) a Western country; so when they inevitably see something that doesn't suit their habit and sensibility, it's "weird", when in fact it is very much IN place in a country which was built on centuries of history and development quite separate from the West.

This here is right, then again, people in general tend to have set such a low bar that anything slightly out of the ordinary, outside of their own environment, is "weird", "creepy", "deviant", etc.

The clip @DEVlL provided for example is not the norm in Japanese movies and there's really nothing out of the ordinary anyway.
Hell, if you'd take your time to look into it, you'd know it's supposed to be like that because it was devised to be a parody. Look into it more, and maybe you'd get to a point to understand why they chose these type of designs.

Well if you go to japan to try and get some used panties from a vending machine, you're most likely going to be disappointed.

The "weirdness" of Japan is exaggerated. People from every country make some weird shit so one strange video doesn't prove much on its own.

Japan isn't that weird, at least to them they aren't. It's all about culture man. Plus they aren't afraid to be different.

The US caused that. By nuking them twice, as other members mentionned, but also by some cultural influence. For instance, Japan's fascination for panties comes from that Japanese used to not wear underwear, and Americans forced them to cover their bodies more.

Every country has their messed up commercials and movies, I don't see how that can define a country in itself as 'weird'.

But honestly if I'm going to be interrupted by a commercial while watching TV then I'd rather watch a hilariously strange one rather than your average boring commercial filled with celebrities' recommendations.

Japanese people normally like to keep their emotions inside so it comes out in weird ways. Then again with us Americans being very expressive people I'm sure we're the weird ones to them

It's not just high school, "school festival" is something they do even in college as an annual thing, and quite honestly, I think it's awesome. While there is an entertainment aspect of it, virtually the entire thing is managed by students. That's everything from the content, location, schedule and more. The university I attended was known for hosting the widely attended festival in Japan, with an attendance of 160,000 over 2 days. Managing that is no easy task (plans and preparations is done months in advance), and I am sure that they learn a lot from it.

Well, you still have at least three options (I am assuming that you are either attending or have completed college):
1. Do your postgraduate studies at one of the universities.
2. Apply for a diploma in Japanese studies at one of the universities.
3. Do a working-holiday if you are from a country which eligible for it.

1. and 2. is obviously expensive, but allows you to experience university life over there which I think is totally worth it. 3. Might give you a bit more flexibility to do what you want, and you can still attend those festivals which are open to the public (even those women's college usually inaccessible to the male public lol).

The people who say this are the ones who have never visited Japan.

I live in Japan and it doesn't feel "weird" or "creepy" at all. The only time I've ever felt weirded out is visiting some of the more adult-oriented shops in Akihabara. Japan is a very peaceful and cozy place and is far more conservative than America and the like.

As a Japan ese, Japan is much weird sometimes, hmm yes. The young people are disilusioned and far from reality, yes. When I turn tv on I see many cooking programs and kanashii dramas, but young people watch only children's cartoons and don't learn about harshness of life. This is a bad thing, indeed, yes.

Because it's like the kid that does nothing but use the internet all day. Isolated, so it created an identity by itself. When japan did weird things, no one was there to cringe at it. And now they are influenced by the west, so it's just awkwardly trying to fit in.

So basically, Japan is a weeaboo.

That's funny. Here in the West it's the opposite. Un-mascular guys are the stereotype of homosexuality.
