This is a question about whether or not you should be coughing up blood by being stabbed through the chest but not through the lung.

In the anime kuromukuro, ken is stabbed through the chest cleanly right through with a long blade. From what I heard it wasn't a grave injury meaning none of his vitals were damaged.

Yet he is coughing up blood, I thought the only way you would be coughing up blood was if one of your lungs was damaged? Is this true?

What do you guys think?

Yeah, violence in anime isn't really the most realistic.

I not know anything related to the medical sides of things but it is anime and in anime anything and everything goes. So seeing things like that I think you should take with a pinch of salt and know that anime logic likes to prevail at times.

I think you answered your own question there.

It's unreasonable to expect anime authors to know medicine.
I, myself, know very little of it. From what I know - lung damage is the only good reason to cough up blood, but lung damage isn't lethal, so fits the description.

Coughing up blood is pretty much a given in any serious fight scene in anime. Stabbed through the chest? Coughing up blood. Punched really hard? Coughing up blood. Blasted by magic? Coughing up blood. Hurled into a solid brick wall? Coughing up blood. Paper cut? Coughing up blood.

Okay, maybe that last one's an exaggeration, but in any fight scene where the opponents are reasonably matched, they're both going to be coughing up blood before the end of the battle. In fact, if a character gets hit and doesn't cough up blood, you know his opponent is a wimp.

In most shounen they also cough blood when they receive a strong punch in the stomach. Not sure if this is realistic or not.

Either he got stabbed all the way through with a blade, or there were no serious injuries. You can't say both and expect things to make sense. Unless 'grave injury' literally only means 'lethal injury' in which case anything that someone survives would be 'no grave injury'. But being stabbel all the way through the chest is grave no matter how I look at it.

Also you can throw up blood without any external injuries as well. Maybe the guy secretly has leukemia or idk.
I probably regret this post by now.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a small amount of blood, but most shows tend to really over do it with the explosions of blood, the coughing up of an entire gallon and what have you.

Whenever there is a foreign body or fluid in the bronchs or the bronchials it triggers a reflex that make you cough in an attempt to force that fluid or body out of your respiratory tract.
in case of a stabbing wound if it hit the lung or the bronchus. ,you're going to cough some blood

Who cares about realism in anime? It's supposed to entertain you, not be as realistic as possible.

lung damage isn't lethal if it managed properly in the emergency because it could cause pneumothorax or plueral effusion which could impair your breathe .

People can actually cough up blood from being stabbed almost anywhere in their body. It's even possible if they get punched hard enough.

Though, if they aren't hit anywhere vital, then they'll only cough up a little bit. Most of the times, they'll mostly just end up throwing up pools of saliva.

Yes, anime is very unrealistic.

Next question.... the character limit is real.

I hope someday someone in an anime would say, "The (anime) viewers are weird."
