Is this known as a plot hole or just stupidity?

For example:

Detective Conan started in the 90's, back then only adults in the series had cell phones and it was really old models, ones you see in the 90's where Conan is set in.

Not a year has passed since the start of the series, as proof Ran is still in her second year of high school.

All of a sudden everyone started having smartphones and tablets, even kids.

Plot hole or stupidity?

Actually phones in this show evolved from antenna phones to flip phones to smart phones in less than a year.

Looking at your explanation I would say a plot hole. They probably just want to satisfy the current generation by changing everything to current generation phones instead of old ones.

There are a million other things that don't make any sense in Conan, just try not to think about it.

well its more of a plot hole/Convenience because the show is popular and they are trying to stretch while at the same time make it feel up to date whether its the technology or the way people wear clothes

Honestly, it is neither. It is only a plot hole if the mangaka is unaware of the implications, and I am pretty sure a mangaka of Gosho Aoyama's caliber would have considered it. Stupidity would also mean that it was done without any consideration whatsoever. It is simply a convenient way to keep up with the times so as to not disconnect the readers from the story. Fictional timelines in LONG running series are a tricky thing and this is how the mangaka chose to deal with it. Consider how Ashe never ages in Pokemon even though the events transpired in the series would have taken nearly several years at the very least.

It's probably just carelessness or indifference.
Why would anyone care about such a small detail?

Probably doesn't matter as much for some anime but for a mystery anime like Conan, I would assume a smart phone would have some advantages over the old cell phones when it comes to assisting in solving a case.

I agree with this. Also, watching the seasons change throughout the series is interesting as well. There have been so many cycles of summer and winter in Detective Conan, but still no one really ages or advances in the series despite the fact that time is obviously passing. One could probably turn this into a fun conspiracy theory of some sort, but for me, I find it just a fun quirk. XP

Western comic books update the year while keeping their characters the same age since the 30s. Not a plot hole, it's just one of those weird conventions you have to accept.

I wouldn't call that a plothole, just the result of a stagnant story that has writers afraid to move forward in any way. Things happen, but in the end nothing happens.

It's not really a plot hole, it's a logic hole - the show has aired for 20 years, during which if you keep track of the celebrations there have been many Valentine's days (at least 4) and Christmases. In spite of that plotwise it has been said that only about 6 months have passed since Shinichi got shrunk. That wouldn't be possible even if you just count the total days he's been solving cases since he got small.

So the point is that although Gosho wants to keep his initial small idea of how everything will be resolved (he had even said that the identity of the Boss of the Black Organization is a person shown in the first 20 chapters) he has to develop the story because the manga became such a hit. In short it is just a paradox, which was born from him trying to be true both to his initial intent and the actual progression of the show.

tl;dr It's not a plothole since it's intentional but yes, it is a paradox in terms of logic

Detective Conan is the longest running anime i know of the only anime that comes close to it is One Piece.
However One Piece plays in a historical time period where Detective Conan plays in a modern time period this means it has to keep up with the times unlike One Piece.
One thing you also have to consider with Detective Conan is that it's aimed at children who look different at an anime them most of their older counter parts.

I agree, they want it to match for today's reality. Though in other caes, they don't do it (though I can only give a manga right now, but even though Skip Beat is running ten years, there are still discman and old cell phones)

Yeah. It's more or less what I wanted to say. The era in which the manga is set is not bound to a particular year or century, but to the day where the manga is written. It doesn't adapts its technology and so on. I would say it reflects today's technology, mentality, fashion...

Not interested with that series anymore. I mean, how many times already Ran has been so close to find out Conan's (Shinichi) true identity and brush it off immediately afterwards? The whole black organization thing went nowhere either.
