| "Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou" is, as far as I know, the first anime to focus on such characters (and I'm not talking about mere kemonomimi), but a lot of Western childrens' cartoons have such characters (Like Winnie the poopooh). Because of the existence of "bronies," "furries," and "My Little Pony," I make this assumption. (Or is there something I missed?) I've always thought Anime to have begun on a similar level to Western cartoons, but Western cartoons diverged and became brain-melting garbage, while anime diverged and became brain-melting fanservice... Is this anime the advent of a new wave of cultural diffusion from the West? |

Right, but hamtaro is ONLY about hamsters, Chi's Sweet Home appears to have a cat, but it's an actual cat, and the squid girl's appearance looks fully human. I guess in Hamtaro, they at least function as humans, but with its exclusive hamster cast, there is a huge dearth in true anthropomorphic diversity which the West has thrived upon. |

| Hetalia is technically anthropomorphism, since it's taking a very non-human thing (countries) and making them human, while still being those countries. You could also argue that this is what a lot of interpretations of youkai fall under. |

Well, the Monster Musume girls are cute but then, that is the thing with practically everything anime, give it boobs and there you have a show. Not that its a problem, I'd watch that show if I have the time someday. Back to the topic, I think Japan has ALWAYS been behind the West in terms of creating anthropomorphic characters. Japan seems to prefer having the usual young male human teen protagonist because that is more likely the main audience for most shows. Hence, all the trends in current anime. And anything that departs from that would probably alienate the audience? I dunno but that's what I think. For a topic like this, you won't have to look further than....  When the Transformers were Japanese toys, they were designed with the idea of them being piloted by humans. But when Hasbro bought the property, they went with the sentient alien idea and in the end, Transformers became and still is a mega-popular franchise in the West. In Japan, it still isn't popular because apparently one of the reasons is that Japanese people find the idea of giant talking robots weird or childish. |

| you mean furries? i'd say no. my brother has spoken to japanese people online and they have all said that animals aren't a big deal in that way. unless it's kawaii and stuff, no-one will like it and take it seriously. animals almost never have the main spotlight, and even if they are there has to be a human [/i]somewhere[/i]. they're just reserved to be the kawaii mascots, whether in games any other media. |

| Anthropomorphism is more rooted historically in western cartoons than anime. Anime has always mostly focused on human characters. Animated theatrical shorts from the golden age are where anthropomorphism became popular in western cartoons. In those shorts anything could literally have human characteristics without appearing human or come alive. Examples |

| I've noticed when it comes to anime usually instead of typical animal anthropomorphism the Japanese would transform an animal character into a human character but have it retain certain animal features like cat ears, tail or jut have a human character with animal features. |
