It's very strange, it's as if they'd be better in a live-action drama rather than an anime.

Is it a matter of appearances in Japanese culture? Is it necessary for the actor to look as good as their characters?

I know that some female seiyuus are also idol (the case of Rie Tanaka) and someones even had musical careers on their backs (Aya Hirano, Eri Kitamura). I don't think however that a seiyuu have to be chosen by their facial beauty meanwhile their voices were good. Also, a seiyuu's fame in Japan is like the fame of a famous actor in the western, so I think that some of them take care of their image to their public.

The idol culture is very strong in Japan, true.

And so is anime culture. While the West has its own awesome voice actors - Frank Welker, Peter Cullen, Tara Strong, John DiMaggio - all who have their own fan following, it's not so strong as in Japan.

Japan wants angelically beautiful and devilishly sexy talent, quite a few VAs do gravure currently or have done it (just look at the main Love Live voice cast, also Yuka Iguchi has a nice photobook herself)

Yeah, the voice acting voice in the west is underrated, but take into account that the anime in Japan is very strong and has much influence in the society, so the ones who voice the characters has to have much fame.

Edit:

I wonder if anyone ever noticed something like this..

It usually happens. For example, Akane Tsunemori's hair was inspired in the haircut of Kana Hanazawa.

Otaku seem like a fairly big problem in Japan. I know the idol culture is based around otaku and they have to stay virgins so the fans can pretend that they have a chance.

Yeah, that part really bothers me. It's ridiculous to expect them to stay pure

Makes me wonder how many of the seiyuu who do hentai/BL/GL work (OnoD, Kamiyan, Suzuki Tatsuhisa etc) do it out of sexual frustrationEy b0ss don't pick on Mamo

I heard about that. Do they not realize if she did have a miscarriage that it would make Mamo sad? Why would you want the person you admire and love so much in pain? I'm his fan and I want to see him smile! Bitches be crazy!

Yeah seriously those are some sad sad people if anyting they should have been happy for hearing such good life events happened to him not sending threat letters etc seems to me that they didnt loved him or respected him and his work but acted due to some weird obsession.

I would bitch slap myself if i ever thinked for a second to act like that.

** Disclaimer: I'm not making excuses or condoning the actions of obsessive fans. I'm just explaining their twisted view of reality. **

Okay I thought about this thread a little while ago. Well the part about the crazy fandom losing their minds when their favorite VA gets married. I'm going to try to "rationalize" the obsessive otaku mindset. I'm also going to use Miyano and Tanaka as examples.

In their minds, they think that they are dating their favorite VA. Everytime the obsessive otaku going to seiyuu events, buy their music, or simply watch an anime they are in it is a "date". They are convinced that their favorite VA is in love with them too.

When their favorite VA announces that their marriage, this is where the batshit behavior begins. In the obsessive otaku's mind, they have been cheated on. They start acting like a scorned lover x 100. Their feelings range from depression to flat out anger. "How dare they cheat on me? How dare they betray me? I loved him/her why did he/she choose another man/woman over me?!"

It seems to be a difference how male and female obsessive otaku react in this crazy ass situation. The ladies want other woman dead as seen with Miyano. She stole their boyfriend/ properly away from them. In his case, there was an unborn child involved, who the batshit fandom also wanted dead. Those girls want the eliminate the wife and child so they have their precious Mamo-chan to themselves again. The guys want their favorite VA dead/hurt like Tanaka. It seems like the guys live by the "If I can't have you, no one can" motto.

There you have it. My analysis on the obsessive seiyuu fandom.

TL;DR: Many obsessive seiyuu fans believe that they are in an intimate relationship with their idol. When the idol gets married, the obsessive fan feels betrayed and cheated on. Male and female seiyuu otaku's may handle the situation differently. Wanting the other person dead (female) or the idol themselves (male).

That didn't excuse their obsessive and crazy behavior. We in the west aren't that obsessed with famous actor (equivalent of a seiyuu fame in Japan) and except some cases, when an actor marries someone, while the news is trending topic, I don't see fans desiring the death his/her, trying to kill him/her of desiring that his/her children born dead.

Independently that they feel cheated or not, a seiyuu isn't a property. It have life and rights, and should be treat as a human being. If one of my favourites seiyuus get married, I will desire to him/her all the happiness of the world with his/her husband/wife.

No, it doesn't. It's a rationalization for obsession.

This is just an only somewhat-informed opinion, but I think physical beauty has become more important for seiyuu over the years I've been watching anime. One of the most talented seiyuu I know of is Kuwashima Houko (Clare, Shurrei, Isako to name just a few), but I doubt she'd be as accepted today because she's rather plain-looking.

The episode in Shirobako where the production committee chooses the actors for an upcoming show says a lot about how the casting process works. The music rep wants one of his singers, another guy wants a gravure idol with big boobs. While the director is concerned about the candidates' acting abilities, the other committee members are more fixated on the candidates' other "talents."

I agree with you 100%. The point of my post was not to excuse their batshit behavior. I am not the type of person who does that at all. I was simply explaining the thought process of an obsessive fan. I don't condone hurting wives, babies, or idols.

I think that the case of Kuwashima is more a case of generational change that other thing. The seiyus changes, and with new times, new blood enter and the studios start to give new chances to the newcomers to testing them. For example, Ayako Kawasumi and Tomokazu Seki had a lot of protagonistic roles in the 2000s (Haru and Elie, Gilgamesh and Saber...) and in this year I didn't hear to Kawasumi in any anime and Seki's only roles were the talking sword in Chaos Dragon and one of the bad guys of Gangsta (I didn't count the UBW anime because these characters were voiced by them in many occasions, as if they were its own). However, Sora Amamiya and Yuki Kaji, practically news to the profession, had a lot of roles.

"We in the west" lmao. Like as if you speak for all western people just like you can act like the general population of Japan (or the majority of the anime fandom) are obsessive otaku?

I mean come on, there is an equal degree of retardedness coming from the western scene. Anna Gunn was sent a barrage of death threats because of her role in Breaking Bad by fans who treat the series as a real life story. It's not a joke, you can go ahead and find her saying this in interviews. That's just one example, this happens in many TV series I'm aware where crazy obsessive fans send death threats to actors/actresses.

When you reach a level where you can't differentiate reality from fantasy, that's where you're in need of mental help. Unless this is some sort of extreme role play, I doubt these kinds of threats are at any sort of realistically dangerous or overwhelming level. Seriously. This is no exception in any culture and I really doubt it's much more of a problem in the anime industry than any other entertainment industry.

I agree in what you say. Maybe my words aren't the most correct ones and I'm wrong, so I give you the reason. Everyone has retarded people in their country. But I was refered only to the marriage between people, not all the trending in general.

But, like I saying above, i agree with you and I assume my mistake.
