Good episode. The comedy was out of place, but the comedy was incredibly funny so it didn't bother me much.

The MC is pretty out of place too, but it'll be interesting to see how he reacts to living into the world he pretty much lives for. He's a really likeable guy, and can get shit done, which is ironic considering he's an otaku, but his whole mentality of work doesn't make sense. If you work to pay for your hobby, why in the hell did you decide to join the military? I get that he's probably gonna get development to change that mentality, as foreshadowed with the little girl's father getting killed and how he reacted to it, but it's still silly.

I really liked this first episode, it was interesting and made me want to watch the next episode.

I hope they explain the things a bit more, it felt a bit fast paced, but since it's only the first episode I'm not that worried.

1. Japan has a junk military, the US, Russia, China, along with Europe would definitely go before Japan if this ever happened.

2. Monsters just invaded my effin backyard, and your telling me it takes 4 months after successful scouting trips to send a squadron of soldiers against creatures who may activate more "gates" or could attack at anytime, possibly with magic or better weapons!? Just because you add fantasy to an anime, doesnt mean it has to be unrealistic.

Note: Japan has 767 active tanks in there national millitary. America has over 8,000 and we have WARheads. We also have over 3x times more planes and Japan is 10th in Military power :/ Sorry Japan :/ but your not going to be heroes anytime soon in a world crisis like "Gate" XD

Still I like the character, I like the idea of Military vs Nature, and I'm a fan of a good old fashioned Journey into unknown territory. 7.5/10

Not bad... Not bad at all! Looking forward to see what roles the girls play, and what happens when one pits modern military to a fantasy one. To me, the pacing blended nicely, knowing that he was in the military beforehand, and still managed to become the hero. I also got a very light Outbreak Company-ish feel from the episode. Very nice.

Not impressed. This show sure isnt brimming with creativity. it takes less than a minute to come up with a setting and a premise like this.

LOL, originality in anime? I think you're expecting FAR too much. Of the 150+ anime a year maybe 5 have even the smallest thing about them be original and fewer anything significant.

I'm just happy this isn't a bunch of kids. Dear god I'm happy about that. It could have just as easily been some moronic whiny middle school boy who accidentally finds a mecha and saves Japan with his natural inborn piloting skills and sulking.

As a manga reader I was rather disappointed with the amount of content they fit in episode 1. Even my friend who didn't read the manga was like, "What, that was it?" when the episode ended. It felt like they were dragging the pace way more than necessary. At least the show is 24 ep, so I don't have to worry too much about them taking their time here or there.

Remember it's following the light novel not the manga, light novel has more content.

Also omg the people's critics on this are freaking hilarious but what do you expect this is mal and all

As someone who reads the manga I completely enjoyed it. Yeah they changed some of the character designs but I honestly don't care I still enjoyed it.

Seriously, if you want to talk "creativity", this is the first anime in god knows how long that I can think of that has a protagonist over 30. Call me stupid but I'll watch for awhile just for that alone.

The violence was really toned down considering it was supposed to be like a massacre. I really hope there isn't this amount of censorship in the rest of the anime. I did like the main character and this is a pretty interesting concept. I'm gonna continue to watch.

Going by what Stark said, my worries for this first episode has gone down a lot since it seems that it was adapted well and the violence wasn't censored, but the real violence happens later so hopefully it'll be okay

Nah, I think this will get it's share of censor... we didn't even saw a dragon eat a single person, only implied(not that is a reason). The blood the violence that appeared only seemed like "eye candy"... Hope I'm just being cynical.

I thought this was a joke until people actually started dying.

This was... strange. Entertaining, but strange. I like the MC he's pretty funny, I actually laughed out loud instead of internally "heh that was kinda funny"-ing. If you're trying to fund your hobby, I really don't think the military is the best job though.

I haven't read the source material so I don't know if the pacing is too fast or if it's that way in the source too.

That won't happen until the MC meets up with all three girls AND the Japanese Government deciding on reporting to the public just what is beyond that gate. Don't expect see it happening until at least 9-10 episodes in.

Also, for those likening this to Outbreak Company, trust me, this is not some crappy Shounen comedy like that show. The situations dealt with in this show are more relateable to real world logic and politics. They won't do idiotically ridiculous "Soccer matches" and other shit like that. If anything, this is suppose to be a Sennin fantasy battle manga, just one that goes by the hypothesis of "what happens if one side is using Age of Empire units, whilst the other side is using Red Alert units". All the above stand true, so long as they don't tone down the R-Rated stuff.

To be honest, from just the changes they made in the character designs being that much more childish (Lelei's design makes her practically look like a child), so I'm actually expecting tone-downs on the sex, gore and violence front. However, those elements necessary for the story to run properly and realistically. We are talking about a Military Unit exploring a new frontier after all, where the existing population that live there had been living a Roman-esque lifestyle (ie sex and violence being a part of their daily lives) before the JSDF invaded. It was suppose to be meant as a justification of the way the soldiers from the other side acted when coming through the Gate (them being from a more barbaric/less civilized society and all that).
I'll be plenty disappointed if they tone down the sex and violence too much, because that would truly make this Outbreak Company 2.0 without the comedy.

Going by the manga though, apart from the appearance of the Gate and the soldiers coming out through the Gate, trying to slaughter everyone, everything else was filler and/or flashback moments. The manga starts off with the JSDF already having established a base of operations in the "Special Region" (which I'm sure we'll see next episode anyway) and you just meet Itami from there.

For the most part though, the filler was good as an introduction to who Itami is, and to show the progression without just dropping viewers into the "Special Region" from the off.

Disappointed in the toned down R-Rated elements, but still have hopes for this show to be good.

Cannot wait until Rory's first appearance (Cute Loli Death God :P), it's sure to be gory.

Just because there are some elements that fits your taste doesn't automatically make the story less crappy or ridiculous. Otaku MC (should I say self-projection? Let's skip that here) stood up to save Comic Market, he leads and orders to the police (and they follow orders from a stranger, lol).

I know Japanese (otaku writers without much social experience, to be specific) doesn't really know much about how society works, but I can bear it with "it's a product of otaku culture" mindset. Just How people try to defend their beloved fantasy fiction with "it's so realistic!", "it's not your generic [whatever]" is pretty pathetic.

One of the things I really wanted to see is a portrayal of a modern professional military. We didn't see much this week, but from the clips I've seen and tonight's show I think I'll be happy. Japan has a solid professional military and it looks like the creators know it. Looking forward to how Itami's platoon members interact with each other. I always preferred an officer who wasn't stuck on himself and so I think I'll really like Itami; he seems laid back but knows his job, as we saw at Ginza where he immediately assessed the fastest way to save civilians was to get them into the Imperial Palace.

You had a guy murder another guy with a shortsword across the throat, a guy almost cut in half on screen, a few shots of bodies in the streets and lots of shots of people being cut down by machine gun fire and everyone is pissed off there isn't enough violence? Seriously? WTF people? Most full length R-rated Hollywood movies don't have this kind of body count. There has to be time for things like story and character development.

You just saw a dragon get ripped apart by a minigun, which was totally awesome and how it should go, rather than the far too common and cheesy everything bounces off the dragon because magic.

Took about a year to prepare to invade Iraq, which is, you know, on this planet, so satellite imagery, satellite phones and GPS work there. https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2002/07/iraq-j10.html Also, as was mentioned in the anime, they were worried about other portals appearing so have to defend themselves. Last I checked Iraq couldn't teleport people from another planet directly into the White House, so defensive measures would make preparation time much longer. But yeah, keep believing your retarded Hollywood movies on how easy it is to FedEX an army and it's support anywhere overnight.

And how many tanks do you think it takes to beat up some guys with short swords and slings? The number of tanks the US has is an embarrassment, and despite the military begging the politicians to stop making them because most are sitting unused, senators don't want factories in their districts to stop production because it will make job numbers look bad. The US has so much military crap they're practically giving it to police and security forces so now you have schools with military equipment. What a joke.

No problems so far, I liked the tone quite a bit. Somewhere in between in your face chaotic and gritty, somber military adventure. I just hope it stays toned down to an extent and focuses on Itami and a minimal cast. I don't think the impending harem and/or moe automatically spells its doom, but with A-1 I'm going to stay hesitantly looking forward to this.

But wow, probably gonna stay out of the episode discussions before it turns into a weekly "my country's dick is bigger than yours'' fest.

I guess I might be one of those people who didn't look at the source material before the anime is out.

But I am liking the protagonist a lot and I am glad that he was able to help the civilains and not go with his selfish desires (which I don't have a problem).

The opening theme is good though it is not one of the greatest things I get to listen to. But for the ending theme, I like it. It sounds really nice and a little catchy.

But I will keep watching and might even check out the source material when I have the chance to do so.
