| Because gaming has become more popular. Before it was kinda niche, like Anime, but when the PS3/Xbox 360 generation came it suddenly became more popular. The community grew bigger, and more "im better than u" gamers have appeared. It's pretty annoying, really, but there are still a lot of gamers out there that I can respect and are not "posers", in your wording. |

| Video games have become more popular. New people join, and are learning the game, so they are bad at it. Gamers play because they enjoy it, not because they are good at it. "Good" is just something you become after playing the game a bit. There are less posers than non-posers. You just notice them more, because they take a lot more "space". |

| You don't have to be a historian to consider yourself a gamer. Really, just being a fan of video games is enough to be a gamer in my book. I'm personally thankful that video games have exploded in popularity. We have come a long way since the crash back in the early 80's. Without so many gamers, I couldn't pub-stomp on a regular basis :) |

| Don't give up on all the new gamers like that. They weren't around to be forced to only save 15 games on a memory card, or less if a game used 2 blocks. They weren't forced to completely restart a game because they realized their memory card didn't have enough space on it and they couldn't delete anything without restarting their console. But if there weren't ever any new gamers, we might still be stuck with those issues ourselves. But new gamers don't stop there. They might not ever have to deal with the troubles of memory cards, but there will be plenty who play the relentlessly challenging games of decades past. The proof of this starts no later than this website, full of people who have gone back to the past to watch countless anime series after series. How many of you played a game in even one of these series, not the first of its series, and went back to play older ones? Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mega Man, Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon, and more. And for everything else there's Game Grumps. |

| As a person who started most of their gaming on PC(Doom was what I first played) and a CS player for 15 years here are the things I've noticed; I notice that casual gaming has gotten more competitive and people like to scream on the mic a lot more(especially in CS;GO). Whether or not they are "posers" I can't be sure. I think the reason for this is because younger people have a feeling they need to prove something, while the older generation like myself have been there done that(playing competitively that is). A lot of the gaming industry is hindered on consoles and games made for younger kids, and has moved away from the community influenced gaming for PC.(i.e: Half-Life was built on a modded id Quake engine. Counter Strike was a mod made for Half-Life etc..) And this is why the knowledge of engines, modding, gui and other programming/texture related things have declined. Because kids don't want/need to or are even interested in the back-end of their games, they just want to play. TL;DR: Weren't you competitive as a kid? If the only thing you've ever played is a console would you care about the back-end of the games you played? |

For the most part people seem to flock around what other people are currently playing. Advertisement and game reviews make a large difference in what people play; old games will not have this, and hence they will follow the saying: "out of sight, out of mind." The only time old games gain a resurge in popularity is when they are remade or ported to newer systems (with the addition of popular gaming sites advocating them, such as Kotaku). Without this, Majora's Mask and likely Suikoden II wouldn't have even been on the "recently finished" list. |
