Ok. This isn't a hate on pit bulls thread, but it'll probably sound like it --- actually, no, no it won't.

I technically live with a pit bull atm, though it's not mine, it's a relative's. The pit bull's name is Lois and she's a girl, still kind of young but pretty much full grown. She is trained to do tricks and sits on command. But everyone in the house seems to be terrified of her besides the actual owners. She hasn't bitten anyone or eaten any babies yet.

But I make this thread because the other while walking to the bus stop, I was literally ambushed by two huge ass pit bulls, but I managed to evade them by leaping onto the hood of car for dear life. I was just sitting there for like 15 minutes as they tried to claw there way up while barking like hellhounds until their dumbass owner called them back from a house down the street and acted like nothing ever happened.

Though yeah. It's experiences like those that only support their nasty reputation, and I know there's all these studies arguing for and against that. But what about you guys? Do pit bulls just scream natural anger and death, or are they just victims of being under a poor light? Do you or have you ever owned a pit bull?

Protaku is curious.

Pit Bulls, like any dog, can be friendly when raised and treated right.

The sad thing is most of the people who get dogs like Pit Bulls want them as guard dogs, so they hit them, and make them savage. So it's the owner's fault, not the dog.

Na, they're just ugly.

Like designs said, it's the owner that matters, not the breed.

I think so too, those Pit Bulls can be dangerous.

And i read this news long ago.

Aggressive dog ownership is not always a sign of attempted dominance or actual delinquency. A new study finds that younger people who are disagreeable are more likely to prefer aggressive dogs, confirming the conventional wisdom that dogs match the personality of their owners. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/05/120522084326.htm

I love pit bulls. They're high energy dogs, and should not be owned by people who aren't fit to care for them.

If getting on a car hood was enough to prevent them from "attacking" you, they weren't all that motivated to hurt you in the first place... Unless you had like a monster truck or something.

I was trying to scare the shit out of them with my feet and backpack so they didn't hop on. Seemed to have worked out. There are lots of stray dogs around here, but rarely do they ever just outright charge at me like that, not the first time this has happened either.

A neighbor of mine who had a pit bull had one that was probably the least scary thing out there and all it just wanted was to be petted/played with.

I don't get how it's shitty propaganda when a pit bull attack is reported, but when a police officer defends himself from an attack, it's suddenly something the whole world needs to know about, at least according to the media.

Don't really want to bring that issue up, but damn, that irony. You can be damn sure if those dogs bit my legs off, it wouldn't make it bigger than local news.

To juxtapose two things into the same category of terrible propaganda. If you're inclined to really believe pit bulls are just being misrepresented, then your same ideal should also apply to the misrepresentation of officers in the media lately.

I find them kinda scary yes, although I rarely encounter them. I don't do well with dogs, and they all seem to bark at me or become intimidated by my presence for some reason. I have no idea why, seeing as I'm a fairly self-contained person who shouldn't pose any threat.

Maybe they can sense that there's something dubious about me.

I got bit in the face by one when I was six. I watched a great guitarist get bitten and thrashed in the hand by one.

These are the two reasons I dislike dogs in general.

But yeah, pit bulls were bred to kill large animals in blood sports. Of course they're scary.

Sure there are some nice pit bulls out there, but statistics don't lie.

Together, pit bulls (27) and rottweilers (4), the second most lethal dog breed, accounted for 74% of the total recorded deaths in 2014. This same combination also accounted for 74% of all fatal attacks during the 10-year period of 2005 to 2014.

Pitbulls are fine, they have a bad reputation though.

My cousin hada pitbull and it was completely calm, until a cat showed up anyways.
Anyways, I don't consider the pitbull in and of itself to be bad, bigger dogs potentially cause more damage than smaller ones though. But as long as you don't do anything to piss it off and it's trained properly it should be fine.

Not sure if it's a family dog though. But yeah, it's nothing to worry about.

People who condition dogs to behave aggressively are more likely going to go for breeds "known" for that behavior, and thus perpetuate the cycle.

Like cops going only into black neighborhoods, finding more black people committing crimes, and then using that statistic to justify going into only black neighborhoods.

Pit bulls are bred to bring down prey, they are built to maul so yes pit bulls are a scary breed of dog no matter how many dog lovers say otherwise. The number of small children mauled to death or heavy deformation just in the past three years is enough to show that keeping that breed as house pets is pretty retarded.

People think its fun to own one till they're trying to pull the way too powerful animal off their own toddlers neck as it rips out their throat and even stabbing the animal won't stop it. People can say its how you raise them but forget that their whole breeding history was for violence and their bodies are designed for such things. The same way my Jack Russell would instinctively chase small rodents and other such animals because thats what the breed was meant to do, chase and track small animals.

Smaller breeds tend to be the more violent ones, due to owners who don't discipline them because aww look at the lil' doggy so cute when it shits on the carpet

But at least you can send them small breeds flying if they decide to attack which is not possible with dogs of bigger breeds.

Then study up on some dog psychology and you'll know their behavior and what to do, or rather how not to get to the stage that one will attack you. :P

Owning a Pitbull is illegal in my county because one mauled a girl so badly in the early 90s (she lived). 3 years ago, we had to vote whether or not the ban should expire, but the voters wanted to continue the ban.
