I like downloading , the quality is a lot better, u can always watch it on demand and do niffty things like plex so you can watch it wherever u are in hd quality. if you start downloading you can do some quity niffty things like using nzbdrone ( which also works with torrents) it takes some time setting up and some googling but omg having it is such a bliss. just add a series it downloads it, sorts it and automatically downloads new anime

I download to avoid buffering, low quality, faster episode completion (some sites if not subscribed or adblocked, make you sit through an ad where its fitting to have a commercial break) and being able to watch on a phone or when the internet is down which is often for my ISP.

Arguable points though.
Lots of direct downloads and torrents for unpopular shows may take slower to download or even find.

Quality. At one point, I watched Higashi no Eden in 144p and it never bugged me. I mean, your taste for resolution grows as you watch more but I know people who can't tell the difference between 360p and 720p. Audio quality is even harder to differentiate. I'm not saying 360p > 720p but some people don't care.

Space. I won't argue with that but I know people who can't afford to spend money on stuff like disk drives because they're saving their money for other things like tuition.

And don't get me wrong, I download pretty much everything but I can see why others would prefer to stream.

...And dl/torrenting too depending on what show we're talking about. LoGH is 480p whether you torrent it or watch it on a streaming site!

Of course downloading is superior in any possible way. I never even thought about watching crappy streams.
Most people I know that watch streams are either too lazy to do their research as how xdcc or torrents work or dont know where to download them even if I tell them EXACTLY where.

720p on the most part. I prefer my 90MB encodes over 300MB+ any day. Majority of what I like watching isn't really top notch animation level.

I download my anime, although I have to make do with 720p, since my ISP limits me to 60GB per month. Can you believe that 60GB is the highest amount that you can get through mobile broadband today in Sweden? Just a couple of years ago, you could have virtually limitless broadband, paying only 2/3 of the amount that I currently pay for my subscription. Those lucky bastards that got a hold of those offers back then will probably never let go of their subscriptions.

Haha, I actually updated my laptop at my university a couple of days ago! Saved a couple of GBs that way. Hmm... Maybe I should head down to the local McDonalds and grab myself some Eureka Seven to go with my nuggets!

Oh, I also just realized that I'm waaaay to picky with subs to watch streams. Commie and Funimation galore, ugh.

90MB 720p? Must be shitty quality.

I only stream if I absolutely have to. You waste more bandwidth streaming than you do downloading.

What's the point of downloading when you could get this stuff via streaming whenever? (Unless you got a tablet or are on the go all the time)

Downloading> Streaming

Why? Becuase you say good by to buffering. Everything is ready for you to watch. Also steaming quality is usually shit too

Try streaming 720p with a max download speed of 220kbs (2mb internet . Its the best I can get from my ISP in the countryside T-T).

I download everything. Every single series I find, in the best quality available. Size is no problem as I have 14TB worth of external HDD space, and I work so getting new HDDs is not much of a problem.

Today alone I've downloaded 101GB, according to uTorrent, and I've been downloading constantly for the last 10 hours. Some things are better seeded than others, and the fastest dl speeds I get is 4MB/s.

At the moment I'm doing a complete overhaul of all the series on my first HDD. Over 300 series need replacing with better quality, and I'm ~170 into it...

Nah, but everything is there at a click of a button whenever I want it. I'm a hoarder, and this is what I hoard. I've seen a good chunk of what I have, though.

I'm paranoid y'see, and I firmly believe the Internet will one day become so censored and controlled that downloading anime will no longer be possible. So I'm prepared, basically.

lol yeah, same here. Because I ddl, I try to get as many series as I can so it doesn't get taken down its website. I have like 250+ anime/anime movies in my collection and I've only seen (or started) 50 of them.

I've never understood keeping downloads, especially given that most people on here complain about their backlogs. If you like the show that much just buy a physical copy instead of that 1TB hard drive.

It'd be like the good old days - sending anime to people on a DVD via post! Rather than VHS haha.

Who says those are the only choices? (Again, same goes for downloading vs. streaming -- it's a little depressing that people these days see downloading as a burdensome commitment on the same level that people used to ascribe to actually buying anime.) For many shows, it's possible to find lower resolutions in much more space-friendly sizes. And even if you go HD, staying away from CoalGirls releases encoded by Tenshi will avoid some of the worst bloat out there. I will go 720p if equivalent-format 480p isn't available, but that's my quality ceiling -- no point going 1080p for anything, the miniscule quality boost (if any) isn't worth the huge size increase.

RE: hentai_eucli's image, concerning "ability to change subtitle appearance" -- that's not possible anymore, for streamed or downloaded anime. Or at least it's not easy to do, unless you have fansubber programs lying around. It used to be easy, until fansub groups abandoned the old hardsubbed AFX karaoke and typesetting (which don't cause lag, as they're rendered as part of the video) and started doing highly-demanding softsubbed effects that broke MPC's internal subtitle renderer, caused massive lag even on non-ancient systems, and forced people to use different software like xy-vsfilter... which doesn't allow for subtitle restyling, because the developers don't care about letting end-users have the same conveniences they enjoyed in 2007.

It's still possible to change styles in downloaded .mkvs, if you use mkvtools/mkvextract to extract the subtitles and use Aegisub to edit the properties of each subtitle style that gets used for dialogue. But in this era of "manually skipping OP/ED without .mkv chapters is too annoying," I don't expect most users to go through all that.

Though that image ignores one non-technical upside of streaming: if done on legal sites, it contributes to the industry, which is hardly an "irrational" and "moronic" thing to do. Whereas downloading, while still better than illegal streaming in every moral and technical way, does not.

I'm a pleb when it comes to technical computer shit, but I do download my anime since it's so easy that a 10 yo kid who can surf the internet can do it. lot of people who don't want to download they're anime is due to HD space problem and/or don't know how convenience it is to download anime.
