| When the government issues you an otaku license. To get said license you have to have seen a minimum number of shows, which includes a certain set, the specifics of which vary by locale. They typically include both LoGH and Boku no Pico though. |

| It's a self-applied label. Copypasta from the last Otaku thread I posted in: [spoiler] Otaku is not necessarily bad, it's just used as an insult by people who look down on them in the first place, no matter how they'd call themselves. It's similar to how Nerd/Geek can be an insult, but people still use it among themselves in a positive manner. Otaku just means that you spend a lot of time on one hobby and are knowledgable about it while it's not your job. Of course in a society centered around working and nothing but working that would have a negative connotation, but in general it's not a bad thing. And the thing is, that the people who look down on that culture would use otaku in a derogative way no matter if someone calls themselves otaku or not, so whether a fan refers to himself as an otaku or not has nothing to be with how he's seen anyway. And since originally the fans used it to refer to themselves in a positive way, I think it's wrong to cower in fear before the term just because politicians and whatnot see it as a bad thing that people have hobbies because it distracts from working 16 hours a day. In the end it's something that is either used to judge people indiscriminately from outside or a term that people can apply to themselves if they want to, or not, like in its original form. |
