I love sad animes, they make me feel human...messed up right?

Anyway, I am looking for a good, sad anime, although preferable one that is not simply about romantic relationships. The type of relational sadness that I do like is NGE's relationships, psychological trauma is a plus.

I also need the storyline engaging enough to keep me watching, although I want it to be heavy on character development. Also, deaths are always a good tear-jerker, we could throw a couple of those in. So I need to be pulled in enough to care about the characters and then have them messed up enough to be utterly emotionally broken.

Oh, and the more it can sustain this type of emotional raping the better, for example, many animes can have very epic, sad endings, but are not very sad throughout. I will take some really good sad endings (as long as the anime is not too long), but the more the merrier I say.

Finally, not too long. I do not have the time for anime that is over 26 episodes, the shorter the better actually. So let me hear what you got!

Just to help some anime that I liked that I thought were decently sad:

5cm
Elfen Lied
Grave of the Fireflies
NGE
Now and Then, Here and There
The Girl who Leapt through Time
The Place Promised in Our Early Years
Wolf's Rain OVA
Voices of a Distant Star

and then some episodes of:
Gunslinger Girl (the premise is kinda sad)
Saikano
Black Lagoon (whatever that episode with the vampire children is)
Code Geass (the end and Shirley)
Berserk (ending)
Cowboy Bepop (ending)

Not really. A good cry cleans out the crap we put up with from day to day.
Fruits Basket - is a good tear jerker
Air TV - f'd me up bad - but it made the stock price of kleenex tissue rise. (edit - I see from your list you didn't like it)

Seconding Jin Roh.

Revolutionary Girl Utena has a rather sad ending.

Basilisk has a rather extensive downer ending.

Gankutsuou has some more tragedy than the original novel, and a rather different ending.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, 2cond GIG especially has some tragic events in the end.

Higurashi has a lot of tragic happenings.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has a number of really tragic events, and portrays them very realistically. ;__;

Mai-HiME has a brilliant downer ending if you skip the last episode...

RahXephon is very much alike NGE, not quite as devastating, but it has it's downs (and ups).

Xam'd: Lost Memories also has a fair share of tragic events, although it suffers from last minute revelations much like Mai HIME...

Texhnolyze however, would have to be the most depressive anime I've seen thus far, nothing has quite beaten that overhanging feeling of hopelessness and despair.

Clannad - Even tho at times its just to happy it does have good drama in it . Also i suggest you watch the movie first since that one is truly a drama .
ef - a tale of memories. and its sequel ef - a tale of melodies.
Gantz might also be something that will interest you .
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is a good short one .
Kanon (2006) has a lot of drama .
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is one of the best dramas out there .
Mai-HiME might also be a good one for you if you wont mind a rather cheezy ending .
NANA is packed with drama .

Seconding:
Jin Roh - left me feeling like committing suicide (not rly, but you get the point)
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen - The whole thing is like one big sad.
Gankutsuou
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - EPISODE 82 ;_ ;
RahXephon
Clannad
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Kaiba

Adding:
Blue Gender - a post-apocalyptic seinen, so expect a lot of deaths and really sad/depressing moments
La Maison en Petits Cubes - beautiful sadness
Planetes - no sad themes, but quite a few sad moments/episodes from memory
Fafner - similar kind of sadness to RahXephon and NGE

glad that i'm not the only one thinking this way.

NANA emotional raping on max.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the #1 anime when it comes to "deaths are always a good tear-jerker", hoewever we are looking at 110+ episodes.
Millennium Actress - a must see!
X TV - CLAMP's most dramatic anime adaptation.

Personally I thought that Gurren Lagann had some REALLY rough moments, little bit of heroism mixed in with heart break.

Witchblade is also a show that is rough down the stretch. Not from the romantic angle, as much as the mother/daughter angle, and it has a particular heart wrenching scene towards the end.

I do have to second Haibane Renmei as well, that's a fantastic series as well.

Also, Kannazuki no Miko is relatively short, and has some serious pyschological damage going on in that show.

Just a few suggestions.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Its bittersweet ending makes you cry. It has a happy end, but sad.
Aria - not tragic, but the last episode of Aria ~ the Origination was tear-jerking

You might also try...
One Piece - It has many sad moments, many characters dying. Later it'll become a bit self-repetitive, but will still make you cry.
Terra e.../Jyu Oh Sei - Both of them has sad, tragic ending, but the story might not be as interesting to keep you watching them.

Well there were some sad moments in Air, but honestly by the time the last episode rolled around (which is the saddest part), I had kind of lost interest in the characters. I thought they got too complicated with the plot for such a short anime, and I simply was not impressed with the whole "flashback" thing.

n-ing Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Nothing has affected me that powerfully. They made episode 83 specifically so you could cry your way through it after episode 82, I'm sure, at least that was what I did. And that'ss just one of many moments.

Adding Bokura no. Rather than sad I guess I should call it outright despair, 'tis the very image of cruel, hopeless, arbitrary and ultimately perhaps even worthless struggle. Just like life itself.

School Days.
ef - a tale of memories.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.
Later parts of Dennou Coil.
Monster.
Kannazuki no Miko (a ridiculously depressing series).

Kannazuki no Miko does have a happy ending though, so it's not all depressing. It's long, crazy and character breaking ride to get there though.

Welcome to the NHK
extremely depressing, deals with death, people with psychological problems, etc. This should be right up your alley. Incredible show.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
This show, despite its eccentricities, is probably the only one that has made me a little teary eyed. Not only is it sad, but it also has the whole package. Definitely get to it fast.

You've watched a lot of the good ones. Trigun might be worth a shot. It starts off upbeat, but I think you'll like it. Gungrave is another good one.

Air --> depressing parent/child dynamics, depressing storyline of fate, depressing everything

Clannad + Clannad ~After Story~ --> enough to make you BAWL

Haibane Renmei --> overall themes of death and loss are saddening

Mushi-Shi --> there were some episodes that were downright depressing

Any of Key's work is gonna bring tears most likely. Lot of people say Clannad though I would watch the movie first that was waaay sadder than the series. Kind of a better ending in a way too.
H20 Foot prints in the sand was pretty sad.
Ef Series definitely a lot of drama mixed with a lot of sad parts.
