playing/reading the Visual Novel. Lots of people said that you don't have to watch the old F/SN but do you have to read it to understand the anime. Will you be able to follow the story without problems? I still want to watch F/Z, so do I really have to play the game?

An old topic that has been discussed a few ties already here (see the older threads). To make it short:

No, you don't have to play the Visual Novel and you would probably feel disappointed watching the mediocre Fate/stay night adaptations by DEEN (which only cover 2 out of 3 routes, and the movie is mere fanservice for those who played the route). You can watch Fate/Zero and then watch ufotable's remake of FSN that will air in fall. The ending of FZ is kinda lacking and even if you read FZ's Light Novel releases, you will be left with questions.

However, I recommend to play the Visual Novel (and better play it first before watching FZ), as FZ's source, the Light Novel, was written under the premise that you already know FSN's entire story. Watching FZ first (the first episode alone is enough) also ruins more twists from FSN than the other way. Any questions that you will have at the end of FZ are all answered in FSN. FZ fills the gaps FSN left (and consequently vice versa). FZ is also part of a larger story, which is continued in FSN.

Most of the people I know played the VN first and then watched FZ, but there were also those who did it the other way. They then watched FZ again and had a much richer experience at the end.

So if you are only interested in FZ, then just go for it and watch it and maybe watch ufotable's FSN remake in a few months, but be prepared to be confused at the end because of the plot. If you are interested in the whole story, play the VN first, then watch FZ.

As someone who read the VN beforehand, I never understood why people (most if not all of them being secondaries who haven't read the VN) thought the ending was lackluster. It perfectly tied itself to F/SN, put into motion events and development that will be utilized for F/SN, etc. If one have questions at all, it's their own fault for starting a series with the prequel instead of F/SN, the thing that actually came out first and provided answers before the questions are even asked in F/Z.

To directly answer OP though, reading the original visual novel is definitely recommended. It does a better job of easing you into the Nasuverse, providing careful world-building and whatnot. You may as well do it anyway, considering F/Z assumes you already know the Fate lore and will end up spoiling without any thought to it.
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

WITHOUT FSN, it is lacking and leaves you with questions (because F/0 is supposed to be watched/read after FSN).

WITH FSN its fine.

Basically what I meant. The ending is lacking if you view Fate/Zero solely as a standalone story, which as I mentioned, you shouldn't do, since it's part of a larger story.

The only thng I noticed was how it had all this stuff about the MAge council and spoke about it like we were supposed to already know how this unoiverse worked and understand this fucked up mage system and so on.

I hear the VN is 100 hours . . .Is it really worth that much time?

I have not seen FSN, waiting for Ufotable like a not so filthy casual. Ca't wait to watch Carnioval Phantasm after ~ X3

The fastest reader I personally know took 35 hours for all three routes and a bit more than 40 hours to get 100%. He did say though, that he skipped some voices/scenes, especially the beginning, since it's almost always the same. You only need 100 hours if you're seriously slow. I needed 50 hours. Also, I second what Forgetfulness said. Fate/stay night is in my opinion better than Fate/Zero. Play it because it's good, not because you have to to watch Fate/Zero.

Forgetfulness is right, Carnival Phantasm is making fun of Type-Moon's flagship Visual Novels, which are Tsukihime (by extension Kagetsu Tohya and Melty Blood) and Fate/stay night (and by extension a bit of Fate/hollow ataraxia). Watching the anime alone shouldn't suffice to get most of the jokes. I guess you can kinda enjoy it when you only know one franchise, though the parodies are the funnier the more games you played.

Well firstly, Fate/stay night > Fate/Zero so I think the mindset should be more of "reading Fate/stay night because it's good" and not "reading Fate/stay night just to watch Fate/Zero"

Secondly, afaik Carnival Phantasm requires knowledge from F/sn, F/ha (?), Tsukihime, Melty Blood and maybe some others.
Somehow I don't think just watching ufotable's will cover all the necessary info but someone will have to confirm that because I haven't seen CP personally

Carnival Phantasm has very little fate/zero content. A few cameos, and that's it. But of course, some characters are present in both F/Z and F/SN; in that case, it's a parody of their F/SN portrayal, which differs to varying degrees from their F/Z portrayal. But it's mostly fate/stay night and Tsukihime in approximately equal measure, with a little tiny bit (1 recurring segment) of melty blood. I don't think there's any Hollow Ataraxia content, but I never played it so I wouldn't really know.

There are a few episodes where Bazett, hollow ataraxia-Gil and Caren appear. The Magical Ruby mahou shoujo crap is also from hollow ataraxia originally. If there are any other references, I forgot them, but there probably are.

I finished watching the first season two days ago and just finished watching the second one a couple hours ago. I didn't read or watch anything relating to the series at all before watching both seasons. I really enjoyed the anime and understood everything completely. Watch it!

I doubt you really understood everything just by watching Fate/Zero.

And there's the thing called plot twist again, that cannot work that well anymore after seeing Fate/Zero first. If he or she wants to see FSN too, he/she should go with the intended order.

Doubt all you want. It left off on mad cliffhangers but I'm guessing watching F/SN will clear up the cliffhangers. And it'll have more backstories on the people in F/0 I'm sure as well. I'm sure watching it before anything else won't do any harm; F/0 is the prequel after all lol

It also came out after F/SN. It's supplementary material essentially.

If you think about it ether one can be considered supplementary to the other. F/0 to F/SN because of what you said Reaper. And F/SN to F/0 because it's technically the sequel. So really not supplementary at all. It's part of the story line.

A prequel, which was stated numerous times by the authors, was written for those who played the Visual Novel. So when Jubstacheit says "Get me the Holy Grail so we can have back Heaven's Feel" or when Ilya says "I heard Justeaze-sama's voice." the viewer should think "Makes sense." and not "Huh?"

Just because it's a prequel doesn't automatically mean it won't do any harm to watch it first. There's no real emotional impact if you go watch the Star Wars prequels and then movie 5 reveals Darth Vader is Luke's father, either. You're sure it's not harmful because you haven't have any FSN experience to see what the prequel already showed you, even though you're not supposed to yet.

It's the same case with Kara no Kyoukai. The chronological movie order is 2, 4, 3, 1, 5, 6 , 7. Why is that the case? Because there's something Nasu intended to achieve when he went with that order and it all adds up at the end.

Hmm you might have something there then. I didn't know the authors meant F/0 to be watched/read after F/SN. If they say so I can't really argue with them lol

The reason why we keep getting threads asking pointless questions is because people didn't read the source material in release order.
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

Reason beingg source material takes a lot longer to get through, and is not animated/involves much more reading.

Currently reading Tsukihime. Not far into it, but I saw Forgetfulness's avatar character XD
