Personally, I feel that there isn't enough detail in anime faces to show whether the character is attractive or not. Everyone just looks average to me, with the only variation being body type.

There aren't many fat females in anime, which is a little sad, but that's pretty much how it is in Japan IRL.

Diversity and the likes is really terrible when it comes to anime if you think about it.

A large portion of anime girls are skinny with the same small faces but mixed with different height/hip/boob sizes. It's not very hard to take the face of one anime girl and put it on the face of a totally different one from a whole 'nother show and get similar results.

What makes this worse is that this isn't as much as an issue for male characters at all. Male characters can be chubby, have different noses, be ugly, have different face types, different body builds, all of that -- but finding that in an anime girl, namely a protagonist, is a rare sight. People are perfectly fine with drawing males that aren't necessarily attractive but females are more often then not given same-face syndrome.

Mostly, no, but once in a while I do see "fat" girls. They aren't really fat, just slightly overweight - but you can see the obvious difference between some of the other characters.

Oh trust me, I know that there are plenty of anime out there that bring out generic, conventionally attractive males. But males in anime are more likely to be given unique and sometimes unattractive designs compared to females.

Some examples:

It's overall more likely for male characters, even male, to have more diverse body shapes, types, and faces than females.

LOl I just noticed. There are no fat girls, only slim girls with silm thighs.. hehe. Obviously this sells better than fat and ugly girls, but there are a lot of ugly/fat/chibi male characters

Well ugly is debatable, but fat is pretty rare, particularly for MC's, even more so for girls. No one really wants to watch that for very long, and the Japanese standards of beauty are pretty centered towards slim people (Japanese people already are some of the skinnier people on earth already). Like think of a 5'7 girl who's like 90 pounds for a model.

well there is Buyuden9if im not mistaken) but i dont think there's an anime for that manga. At first she was cute and thin but later on she became fat and chubby. On top of that she was a very important character in the entire series. But I do admit it's rare to find nowadays and tbh I was kind of surprised they left her like that instead of making her typically cute again. Respect for the artist! :)

Aku no Hana has some decent looking girls, that don't look like super models. Otherwise, most anime seem to be sexist, only portraying girls as über cute.

That's because the overwhelming majority of anime is aimed at men. You won't see any fat or ugly males in anime aimed at females either.

People do not want to see ugly or fat people as a general rule, in any medium. Look at TV shows and movies, they are just the same. If you see a ugly or fat person they are usually a bad guy, or someone you are otherwise supposed to dislike.

I can personally say that I do not want to see, fat and/or ugly people in Anime.

King of Queens.. one of the best comedies of all time had a fat guy... now its Mike & Molly (only medicore) and it has a fat guy and a fat woman... In Movies we've Jack Black, Zach Galifianakis f.e.. which are really popular.

ppl dont care about who is fat etc... only some dislikable [insert badword here :D ]

hahaha lol. I have seen fat girls in animes but they tend to be depicted as like "evil" characters or characters who are not nicel....which is sorta distorted, whereas the fat guys that I've seen in animes tend to be normal people....but yeah. it's just due to societal sexism, women are highly judged on their appearance by both men and women so in most animes, the female characters are either attractive or at the least good looking
...just the world we live in

also to the op's question, most of the time when someone portrays a fat person in anime its in bad tatses or mean spirited. There is really no reason whatsoever to draw characters fat for the sake of drawing them fat, if you work it into the plot somehow then yeah but most of the time it will just again, be mean spirited.

Well, I agree. Anime is all about stereotypes and the stereotype regarding fat ppl is that they're either a) (if they're being portrayed in a sympathetic way) gluttons or b) evil/mean/creepy (ugliness = bad character). So if a character is portrayed as fat it either says something about his eating habits or about his bad character.

I don't think I've ever seen an anime where someone was fat just for the sake of being fat and a completely normal person apart from that.
I see fat people portrayed in only 3 ways

1: Probably the most common and what you already mentioned, fat = evil. Whenever there is some asshole corporate antagonist that sits on the sidelines and orders people to death they are usually fat and portrayed as idiots with power

2: and the 2nd most common, they are portrayed as being socially retarded or outright disgusting perverts

3: for the sole purpose of being made fun of.

theres only one show i can think of that has a fat character in it for the sake of being overweight, and thats genshiken. But that was done for a guy and not a girl.

As if movies and live-action series all had ugly and fat actors/actresses playing main characters... right?

And as already been said, cuteness, coolness and ugliness varies from person to person. Some characters, who are supposed to be cute or cool, have the total opposite effect on me. Just like I don't find all actors/actresses to be good-looking.

EDIT:
Also, there are a few ugly and fat girls out there. Just try Girls Saurus. The main girl starts super fat. There are a guy who goes after fat girls. And it has the ugliest girl ever seen in manga: http://www.anime-source.com/manga/girls/c023dx/118.jpg

Also correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't their less fat people in Japan then any other developed nation in the world? So it wouldn't be so unusual for that transition to happen.
only 3.5% of the population is obese, thats so little especially since someone can be obese while looking averagely proportioned.

That seems a lot like black and white thinking.
There should be all kinds of people and characters differing in body types could be one factor in achieving that.

One thing I do like about making all characters that are supposed to appeal to the viewer the same body type that's also the ideal is that once they're equal in that regard, you can entirely focus on their behaviour, personality etc.
However, variety is a good thing and that doesn't necessarily mean what one would probably imagine when hearing "fat", but instead have someone (or several characters) with an ideal body shape and then others who deviate from that in both directions. How far one would go with that is also connected to how many healthy body types you want to show; some skinny and fat body types aren't exactly healthy to have and people (especially younger ones) do compare themselves to that (not that that would generally make people any healthier lol).
By the way, the topic title kind of reminded me of
from Suki tte ii na yo... Considering she was much more "normal" looking in the anime when compared to the original work and all that... ~.~

Not just today and not just in anime.

Unless the character being ugly/fat is the point of the show or episode, there really is little benefit in portraying them that way.

Plenty of older anime had fat girls or ones who weren't perfect barbie dolls. I can just as easily say unless the character being pretty/skinny is the point of the show or episode, there really is little benefit in portraying them that way.

I started watching HxH 2011 not too long ago, and I was plesantly surprised by the wide diversity of chara designs, for both males and females : all kinds of different races, body types and facial features.

So yeah, I spotted quite a few nameless and side female chars that don't necessarily look good or have very unsettling if not downright ugly designs, and that are never played for the laughs.

Among the side characters, there's Kikyo Zoldyck, whose weird ass design somewhat won me over (even though she certainly doesn't look half bad):

Senritsu (Melody), whom I totally ship with Pika <3:

And of course
