An unusual sword dating back to the Edo period was discovered in a family storage cellar of Shiroi City in Japan's Chiba Prefecture. Now donated to the prefecture's cultural archive, the discovered sword has been compared to the reverse-blade sakabato seen in the Rurouni Kenshin manga and anime series, according to the Asahi News.

Pretty neat, although I wonder if it was just a defect...

That sword is impractical though, whoever wielded that reverse blade was at risk of serious injury from being accidentally stabbed by it.

Surely anything can be a 'reverse' blade if you just hold it the other way.

The difference is that unlike normal blades, this one is naturally reverse.

Might as well make both edges blunt.

The edge of the sword is on the inside of the curve, instead of the outside.

Watch or read Rurouni Kenshin. Then you'll know why it is such a big deal.

The protagonist of Rurouni Kenshin wields a katana where the the edge is on the inside of the blade's curve, ergo, a reverse-blade sword.

It's impractical, and not at all a normal design; there were presumably no records of any existing (historically) until now.

TLDR: Not that big a deal, but fiction reflecting back into history.

that's a knife, but one existing from that period is fascinating and goes to show how much the legend of Kenshin means.
