Why some anime get different seasons instead of different arcs?

Let's take One Piece as example. What would happen if One Piece had a new season/a new title for every arc? It would have like 17 different titles. Well, that's what happens with some anime and I have no idea why.

Darker than Black could be one series with 50 episodes.

Kaiji could be one series with 50 episodes.

Inuyasha could be one series with 100 episodes.

Pretty much all of them could.

So, why?

Why not?
I don't think it's that important.

I don't think it really matters. Same show. Same story

They possibly wait to see how it blows over with the public to make sure they're not wasting their money.

Darker than Black had a lot of success when it was released. There was no need to wait. And still, can't they simply pause the anime and continue after some time? But no, they must create a totally new series just for the hype?

So why do they leave cliffhangers? They were obviously expecting a sequel. Magi is an example.

Why? Its their trademark, they can do whatever they want with it.

Lack of source material to adapt or it might quickly catch up with the manga is likely the case (e.g Beelzebub)

Doesn't explains why they can't simply pause the anime and resume it later

That's quite simple actually. Long-running series are mostly made in case the original material is already interestingly popular to keep being released with adequate audiences . Others are divided into seasons, not only to check out the general public acceptance of that story, but also to have a more detailed adaptation without fillers and stuff which are more likely to be received more open-heartedly by the audiences .

Some people tend to feel hesitant to start watching long running anime.

For example, Major has 6 seasons (26 episodes each, if I remember correctly). If I found Major as 156 episodes anime, I'd feel uncertain. How if I watched it up until 5 episodes and I didn't like it? Major fans would complain that I didn't watch enough episodes to decide. How if I watched 100 episodes and I didn't like it? Major fans would complain "How you could watch 100 episodes of anime you didn't even like?! You hater!"

But I found Major as anime with 26x6 episodes. I thought, "This must be a good anime. They even made it into 6th season!"

Something like that... lol

Have you ever heard of contracts? That's why Ginatama is split into seasons.

For Inuyasha in specific, the reason why it was divided into 2 arcs is probably related to the 5 year wait between them (while the manga finished its publication).

Depends on who they aim the anime at. If it can be watched by everyone in the family(including kids) then it airs at a certain time and almost every anime that airs at that time are longrunning and focuses more on sale of original material and tv ratings(also merchandise). If it's late night and is aimed at otaku or other demographics of older teens or adults then they're usually 13 or 26 episodes, those go for more of disc sales and original material. Though I believe there is some spill over on both sides. K-ON season 2 sold a lot of discs but not Naruto or One Piece's seasons going at that time, they don't expect anyone to want to pay for those many many seasons.

As there are a lot of seasons, it is pretty cheap.

You can buy four discs full of episodes from the current arc for 20 dollars
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/one-piece-dvd-collection (not sure how many episodes are there but an arc of One Piece is usually 60 episodes)

OR you can buy one season (25 damn episodes) for 50 dollars

I'd say because they're unsure if they should continue the anime therefore giving it a suitable ending if they decided to stop there.

As i know for trademarking's i don't know if its for anime the same but you need to pay for every trademark and i am not sure you can change what it contains in that time you made i think you need pay separately for lets say Darker then Black and for its sequel they needed to pay for another trademark same goes for Blizzard even if then new expansion includes the name World of Warcraft they still need to reserve the name for new expansion World of Warcraft : Wrath of the lich king i don't know if this is correct just explaining what i meant

the big reason is probably the budget, keeping a long running series is very very expensive especially since if it doesn't sell well they will likely shit can it

Jizzy as you would call yourself because youre a dick The most butthurt award goes to you And clearly you havent watched that many shows thats why you cant determine if a show is unique or not Or maybe you're just a child who likes common stuffs where hero saves the day and guys gets all the girls. Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

The WoW team is always patching the game. When they want to add a new expansion pack, they don't need to release it as an expansion pack: They could pretty much include it in the original game. But they want the monies, they know how to milk their cows, so they release it as an expansion pack. Or what? Is the president of the United States going to sue Blizzard for releasing content to their game without creating an expansion pack? The same applies to anime, is Obama going to sue them because they made some new episodes for their anime?
