Well, saw IS2, episode 1, and while I though it was pretty good and will not give any major spoilers away, I'm kind of starting to get annoyed at how dense Ichika continues to be in regards to the girls.

While I don't want to really take that much of an position on this, I do want to give some thoughts to rationalize why he is so overly dense.

1. He is the only male that can pilot the IS. That alone is a big burden to wear and therefore it can make him much more focused on that goal instead of becoming involved in romance. He already has enough to bear.

2. His sister: His sister, Chifuyu Orimura, is the most famous IS pilot and the first person to win a world tournament. Giving the small implicitly (read assumption) that Ichika thinks people have high expectations of him because he is the younger brother of Chifuyu, along with the whole kidnapping incident and therefore making her sister forfeiting the last round of the second world tournament to rescue him, gives him this moral obligation to make her sister proud and he's trying to do that by focusing on his IS training.

3. He's the only guy on all-female school. That alone is enormous pressure both socially and mentally. This was emphasized by the anxiety that arose when Ichika was introducing himself to the rest of his class.

4. His difficulty of adjustment and relating to others. Ichika, as he pointed out many times in the first season - in correlation with the previous point - has difficulties in the atmosphere he in. That's why he was happy to see his childhood friends Houki and Rin, because he knew them and could talk with them. This was also elaborated in some episodes and conversations.

The problem is that the points are hard to link to why he is so dense. I also go out of the fact that the writers intentionally made him so dense because of the humorous aspect, but I also believe it has a bit to do with the other points that can pressure him. People should take his dense behavior with a grain of salt I guess.

7th - Absolutely fantastic reply that was very well thought out.

Your main points are all true..., for normal guys with testosterone :-). Unfortunately, Ichika seems to have the social maturity level of a 6 year old, where he doesn't have a clue. Stress, a sister complex, and other issues can cause a guy to be a little skittish with other girls, but not so blatantly unknowling, since there are impulses in males of a certain age that are instinctive.

However, I think your last point is the real reason. So many Japanese writers think that a naive, ignorant, female frustrating male protagonist is funny. And maybe that is true in Japan, but not really elsewhere.

Thank you for the sincere reply.

Ichika sporadically showed some of these impulses to Houki and others though. The almost-kiss in the last episode of the first season. Even now in the second season there was one occasion that Ichika showed his manly instincts. But still, that doesn't nuance the fact he's is not catching easy to hints or even explicit interests from others.

In my opinion, I actually - even if I'm the minority - like his dense behavior because it makes the group stay together and I also find it enormously laughable how he can manage not to romance with others on a all-girl school where all girls like him.

That's so unrealistic it gets hilarious. I can't even take Ichika seriously anymore because of it.

This picture, with his iconic facial expression, summarizes it all.

It's almost funny how socially unaware he is. I get the fact that he can be cautious as to not overreact, but the way he's portrayed to the audience just makes him look so RIDICULOUS.

It's almost as bad a Yuuki Rito who after being shown boobs and breasts HUNDREDS OF TIMES and yet he still act surprised, shocked, or embrassed.

For a Harem Protagonist to make the viewers cringe is a VERY bad thing.

It's funny for sure, which is why this whole series is just a fiasco, pretending the premise wasn't a sign of it's failure already.

Get used to it.

It's more or less the staple of this genre.

Don't expect anything better from this anime. The novels are terrible, and he's even more dense in them.

Keeping him dense is the key to making new season and continue the story. Better drop it before you realize it too late.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Did people really watch this show for him? I'm pretty much already ignore him when watching second season.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

Actually he is kind of a foil to trigger actions or reactions from the girl. So ignoring him is pretty much a good way to tackle it. Some people would just imagine himself as Ichika and then fantasize how he would do "better" dealing with the girls (which usually lead to some doujin stuff). That's perfectly fine too.

Oh, I understand that is one of the reasons they do that. If he'd hooked up with Houki or Charlotte, the show would lose a lot of its comic appeal. But they could do it so much better. If he wasn't so dense, he could have different type of relationship issues with each of the girls, which I would personally find more appealing.

That's like Harem 101 the MC must be dense as fuck. If he wasn't dense the harem will basically fall apart, if you don't want a badly written protagonist then watch a harem that is not so generic like this one.

Well I have absolutely no intention of watching IS 2 but from what I've seen of season 1, he has absolutely no reason to be dense. I consider this bland and convenient writing to build up cliche harem comedy the author still considers funny this day and age.

I mean, characters like Goku and Luffy are really the only ones who have good reason to be dense, since they are mentally handicapped.

I don't find the main male protagonist of IS as anything special, so I do not really care about him. Since he isn't anything luring, I prefer to focus on the girls. ;)

I don't think the show would be very appealing to general(japanese mainly) audience if they actually made serious relationship approach. Honestly the novels are a lot better because we get to know what's he's thinking before he responds to the girls advances.
And IMO since when DID a harem protagonist actively search for girls? The only show I could think of is HighschoolDxD -_-
As of 27/7/14 I have decided trap anime Sword Art Online II has more appeal than Mahouka.

I think he shows more to Charl (other than Houki).. though he is still too dense that is why Charl complains that she is playing with maiden hearts all the time.

He's just into Chifuyu-nee so he must play dense or he's dead if they all find out, well we could see their reaction when he said Chifuyu is the best girl :D

but keep in mind he knows that incest is wincest XD
