In real life I've only met 3 girls who watch anime and they were all crazy insufferable weeaboos. There were several dudes I knew in HS that liked anime, and they were a lot more chill about it.

Basically what I'm trying to say is this:

Or at least in the anime fandom anyways.

The US has a pretty decent anime community. Unless you're referring to your home country by some chance...?

IRL I'd say it's about 50/50 (and this is from both personal friends and from what I saw in college anime/Japanese film courses)

Online...gender doesn't' really matter...at least to me, though I'm probably in the minority on that one.

It's probably close to 50% 50%. But I fell like (IRL) it's the females that are more pronounced. Thinking back to high school and college it seemed way more likely for girls to print out pictures and put them on there binders, and buy things like anime pencils, and things like that, that make it obvious without talking to them. Though I met guys who liked anime too it was usually though conversation. My high school actually has an anime club that my friend got me to go to once and I was surprised it was 50% 50%.

Online it depends on the site in MAL it seems like there's slightly more males but that true about most ranking sites I use for whatever reason, but in some other places like yahoo answers it seems like there's a lot more females.

In regards to the Japanese anime community, it's like 70-80:30-20 in the guys-girls ratio. Being into anime isn't exactly "cool" in Japan, and you know how people are about expressing themselves, right?

Anyway, in regards to the IRL community, the girls are definitely more "pronounced" (which isn't necessarily a good thing) However, I find that, typically speaking, there are more guys who actually watch anime. The majority of them stay in the closet because they don't want to be ostracized like the "more pronounced" fans.

Anyway, that's just my opinion, so if you have any information that you would like to share with me, please just go for it.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

The ratio of Male:Female series in anime is very heavily leaning towards males since the there are more males that watch anime. It sucks but there you go. It's another reason why I prefer Manga > Anime.

If you think I am kidding just count the number of shoujo/josei that come out in a given season to everything else, that will sort of give you an idea of the ratio of male to female geared anime.

There are plenty of shounen and even a fair few seinen series that have very large or even majority female audiences as well though.

If the majority of anime viewers were female than shows like Free! would be ALOT more common than shows like K-On.

Trust me, companies for the most part know their audience, so the fact that the majority of series target a male demographic means that the majority of viewers are male.

Your statement kind of has no value, I mean even if the ratio was, and of course it isn't this skewed, but 9:1 male:female ratio and there were 1,000,000 viewers then there would still be 100,000 female viewers, and that is a large number. Basically what I am getting at is that saying that shounen/seinen have a large female fan base doesn't exactly mean much. Also since the shounen/seinen that have a larger female to male fan base are rare, it is sort of like bringing up the exception to the rule.

And lastly, saying that plenty of females watch shounen/seinen when like 90% of anime is shounen/seinen doesn't say much. They really don't adapt very many good Shoujo/Josei imo so if I want to watch good anime it isn't like I can choose not to watch shounen/seinen. That is just what there is to watch.

I compared the amount of shoujo/yaoi manga released daily with the amount of shounen/yuri manga, I'd say it's pretty even. Now considering that lots of females are into shounen and/or yuri manga while only a few guys are into shoujo or even yaoi one must come to the conclusion that they number more.
It also correlates with my personal experience from manga sites such as mangafox or mangaupdates where the majority of users in the forums seem to be female, contrasting withn this anime site where the majority of users is male.

The ratio should be relatively even actually, despite anime being largely depicted as a male-focused "activity". Both men and women enjoy many aspects of anime equally, and most anime contain both action, comedy, and at least some level of romance which increases comparability between the genders.

Same thing goes with gaming, and many other activities actually. Even things such as paintball feature a relatively even ratio of male to female participants.

From the four Anime conventions I attended this year, I would estimate that there was a 60% male to 40% female split in each event. Though it seemed like the cosplaying population had a reversed ratio.

50/50 I personally know more girls. But! I know most anime is aimed at guys but... you know most people who participate in the Yugioh fandom anime side are women right? And most people who play the card game are men and do not watch the anime. I did both. Only girl who was at a regionals on more than one occasion. Only girl at several card shops playing. There were only 2 people out of a room of 50 at an anime convention to talk about the anime that were male, one was my husband and he was forced to go, the other was someones older brother forced to cosplay Kaiba. legit- the only man cosplaying a yugioh character. online, I know of only TWO men who write Yugioh fanfiction. One is gay. lol.

Most guys I know aren't as hardcore as the girls. and as someone who is hardcore enough to buy every release of a favorite series, I think the fact that I hang with more women and older otaku should not be a surprise. I also go to lolita meets. But yeah. If you watch a lot of anime, makes sense to hang with others who do the same.

Well in some way, female tend to socialize than male. I'd argue that there is not equal in which the ratio of anime watchers, but I'd say that male dominates female in of course certain genres. Whereas, female dominates males in certain genres. In overall, male is dominates female.

Restrictions are probably, Ecchi, Yuri, Yaoi and sport themed series, so the confusions are not there, we can rule of Shounen and Shoujo too.

I am the only woman I am aware of who watches anime in my personal circle. The others are male. I believe we are generally not that open about this hobby on the internet, because women are subject to harassment of several kinds and prefer not to make their presence too widely known on the internet. This is likely why many females pretend to be male on the internet, so as not to fall victim to the overabundance of tasteless comments being flung in their direction, and to not be assaulted over every word they speak.

Depends on the country. In the west it is a lot more popular with males as a lot of western females think it is weird, immature, or just straight out porn. However, in the east and in Japan itself I would say it is a lot closer to being equal. World wide I would guess males slightly out number female fans.

I honestly think it's pretty even. My college anime club was mostly female, though. My entire dorm floor was full of anime fans both on the female and male sides. It didn't matter which gender they were for the varying degrees of being a fan. My roommate was way too into it. She was an officer of that club, as well as several other floormates. They were the ones that got me into anime. Although, I've never been as into it as they were. When it comes to anime in general, gender doesn't really seem to matter. Yes, some are aimed at a certain gender more than others and vice a versa, but both can enjoy them. I know some 'mainstream' ones that have essentially fanservice for both genders. People seem to forget that there are a lot of different types of anime out there. Many people will watch an anime for the story, humor, art, etc. They might ignore some of the ecchi-ness, or they might enjoy it themselves. (If they're aimed at a different gender.) I think it's kind of silly to say such a vast medium is mainly for certain people. I personally like only a few shoujo anime, and I love shounen a lot more. Yet, I'm female. I also like seinen and some josei. There are many anime that aren't under those sort of labels. It's a lot more complex.

I have lots of fujoshi fangirls around me. More than male anime fans. But I don't associate with them because I kind of a closet fangirl *cough*

From what I understand, here in MAL, there is more male than female. Also, the male here is more vocal and more active.

Female anime fans usually more active in sites like tumblr, ffn, ao3, twitter, pixiv, and such.

At least I feel like that. I myself more often go to tumblr, ffn, ao3 to talk about anime than here on MAL. because here I can't talk about seme/uke/shipping/romance

In my opinion, it's probably relatively somewhere close to 50/50. Even though most anime have their specified 'target audience' pointed at either male or female, it doesn't seem to have too much of an impact on who actually watches it, that's just my opinion though, I'm probably wrong.

I just happen to know some women who prefer shounen over anything else, and men who prefer shoujo.

Yes, I also believe most people don't care about the target audience when picking/ watching an anime.
