Just Name it.
You can list your top 5 if you want.
Just select your #1 for poll.

Me:
1.) Strategy
2.) Shooter
3.) Fighting
4.) Action/Adventure
5.) RPGs

P.S. I added Visual Novel to the list, since it seems so many people strangely enjoy that genre as a favorite, as well as Beat 'em Up. And also, sorry if these genres are too broad for some, it's great if you can just specify on your own.

I hate shooters, fighters and any sort of racing games. It was really difficult to place my last 3 as I sometimes enjoy certain strategy games over action/adventure ones and although I truly enjoy MMORPGs it's hard for me to find a good one.

Shooters and Fighters are like the main sources of competitive gaming.

I'd put visual novels somewhere in my list. I'm not sure which it would fit under of those, considering some have simulation elements, or RPG elements, etc.

Don't like shooters, except Bioshock. Don't like racing, except Mario Kart (SNES). I don't even think about playing a sports game.

Can't stand most shooters, sports, or racing games. I haven't found a single MMORPG that I've liked, but I know that if the right one comes along I could love the genre.

I play them when I'm with friends but other than that I just have no interest in them. When I was younger I used to play a lot of fighters, mostly Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters along with heavy heavy doses of Counter Strike so I got kind of good at both genres. Now I'm mostly into enjoyment (thus Platformers and Action/Adventure), storytelling (RPGs) and thinking ahead (strategy)
I hate World of Warcraft

I name my genre slightly different and here is my top 5:

1) RPG (eg. Persona 4)
2) Visual Novel (eg. Clannad)
3) MMORPG (eg. Maple Story)
4) Mecha (eg. Gundam Battle Chronicle)
5) Tactical (eg. Luminous Arc 2)

These are not the only type of games I buy. However, these are the type of games I would spend more on.

Took me a bit to think of it ...
I just like FPS style games the most, Helps me feel like I'm in the game.
I just can't find any good MMORPGs lately ... So I'm sticking to Consoles now ... until SW:TOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) comes out of course! (I'm a big Star Wars nerd :D)

1) Platformers
2) Strategy
3) Racing
4) Action/Adventure
5) Music

I cant stand RPG's anymore.. way too boring for my tastes I only a select few.
Platformers has to take the top spot for me though, nothing beats a good ol dose of Super Mario Bros 3 or the original Sonic.. though i reckon most of the new platformers are really crappy cept LittleBigPlanet.
I had to go with strategy over racing, way more strategy games i like then racing (only gran turismo and burnout D:)
Music games are cool, i enjoy them because i can just pick it up and play for 10-15 minutes then go off and do something else without feeling like im putting something on hold, also great with mates =)

1) Platformers. I grew up with them and still find them fun today. My favs are Mario, Sonic and Klonoa.
2) RPG. My current second favorite. I love traditional and strategy rpgs. Some of my favs are Shin Megami Tensei and Disgaea.
3) Action/Adventure. Usually the go-to genre for me. Some of my favs are Legend of Zelda and Fumito Ueda's games. If Horror counts here, I love Silent Hill games.
*) Shooters. Filler genre. I prefer shmup, light gun/rail shooter and run and gun (think Metal Slug). Don't like FPS/TPS much.
*) Racing. Filler genre. Some of my favs are Project Gotham Racing, Crazy Taxi, Mario Kart and recently Ridge Racer and Outrun.
*) Puzzle. Filler genre for me. I don't like the logic based ones but falling block and such are so much fun for me. Some of my favs are Tetris, Lumines, Yoshi's Cookie and Puyo Puyo.

Third person shooter, opposite of first person shooter. Basically, any shooter where you can see the main character's back, lol.

(Everything in my top 7 I enjoy and follow. Everything not in there I neither follow nor care for)

I'd go with

1) Fighters
2) Strategy
3) Racing
4) Sports
5) Action/Adventure (is this what Castleroids are classified as?)
6) Platformer
7) Shooter...if you mean vertical, horizontal, or rail shooters. Think Ikaruga, Aero Fighters, Gradius, and numerous bullet hell games. Third-person and first-person shooters are some boring shit.

At the same time, where is the beat em' up genre? It's fundamentally different from fighters, but it would easily make my top 7.

Probably out of everything listed here, I'd say RPGs constitute the most useless, unoriginal, and bankrupt genre out there.

Poll needs a few more options.

1. rpg (non-linear variety from the west is my preference)
2. adventure (old school point 'n click; the kind you rarely see nowadays, unfortunately)
3. turn-based strategy (don't see many of these anymore, either)
4. simulation
5. fps

And then everything else. Action, platformers, racing, flight sims, interactive fiction (text adventures), even sports (with a preference for basketball, naturally).. Will play almost anything if it's good. Have a general dislike of mmorpg's and rts, with few exceptions, however.

What do shooters mean, though? First-person, third person, or space shooters that are vertical-scrolling, horizontal-scrolling, and/or rail?

Is Counterstrike really the same as a bullet hell Cave shooter?

Completely different genres.

As Wikipedia puts it... Shooters is a subgenre of the Action genre, while shmup is a subgenre of the shooting genre.

That's exactly what I said...but it also doesn't help any when rating a genre. I love shmups, but think 1st and 3rd person shooters are epically boring. So am I fan of the genre as listed in the first post or not?

Well, I am in the same boat. I don't like FPS/TPSs, but I do like shmups, light gun games and run and gun shooters. So in a way I am a fan but not to all of the types in the genre.

I honestly don't mean to pick on you, but you realize that statement is hilarious? Fighting game fans consider MK one of the most hilariously awful series in the history of video games. A complete trainwreck. It's dreadful on every level except for what it made it famous; fatalities. Putting it right after SF would be like putting someone who has never touch a basketball in their life is on the same athletic and skill level as LeBron James in basketball.

Soul Edge was a great game, Soul Calibur has a very poor reputation nowadays (thanks to both SC3 and SC4 sucking), as does SSB. But compared to MK, they're masterpieces.

Focus

70 percent for RPGs and MMORPGs. Probably typical numbers for an anime forum...
