There have been anime that use a classic song as the sound track. Even if it fits perfectly, should the show still receive points for it's sound track?
(example: So Ra No Wo To)

Maybe, but I would perfer and "O"ST. I like hearing new music as BGM and adding to my collection when it's good.

I prefer original music created for the soundtrack. I know this is far from being considered classical music, a style that I'm not quite fond of, but the DBZ movie dubs always had metal songs from American bands playing the background. Songs that I liked, but something I didn't consider as good background music.

I like orchestral music, but with variations that make it stand out from the classical format.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

While Amazing Grace made a good plot point for Sora No Woto I feel like it would not work in other anime. It all depends on the time period of the anime I guess.

It's not the kind of music, it's the use of it. And very few things have a better use of classic soundtrack than Princess Tutu.

Just to clarify, I meant a classic song like something by Beethoven, not just 'of the classical genre'.

I agree with both the posts above me. EDIT: There were 2...blame MAL lag.

I'm very fond of music, and I also enjoy anime OST material, because more often than not, they are always very good. Every second anime has a great OST, and I want it to stay that way. New beautiful music is never a bad thing, and it should be encouraged.

For me, classic music can both hurt and hep a score.

Case that helped: Cowboy Bebop's use of Tchaikovsky in "Toys in the Attic". I think "Waltz of the Flowers" really worked for that scene.

Case where it hurt: Mars of Destruction's use of the ol Ludwig van. For that it just seemed really forced like they were just trying to save money on a soundtrack by using something that they wouldn't have to pay for.

Sakamichi no Apollon comes to mind. It used all sorts of jazz pieces from the olden days.

Totally recommend watching it by the way. Same person that Sakamichi's soundtrack did Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack.

SEEN IT... XD it was awesome, but was all that jazz really stuff that had already been written?

The point of this thread was if they use songs like Greensleeves and other songs that went down in history, should the anime get points for having a good sound track? Obviously if Sakamichi no Apollon had a bunch of Jazz songs written just for that show it would be called a great sound track.

another example, I think it was Gunslinger Girl that made use of the Ode to Joy..?

Ludwig van Beethoven did a great job composing the music for Shoujo Sect. I hope that he continues to make great music for yuri hentai.

Yes, if the soundtrack fits perfectly then it deserves praise. A good example is Princess Tutu which uses a ton of songs by Tchaikovsky as well as lots of original songs.

Even if it does use classical music half the time I wouldn't even recognize it as being unoriginal and only a quarter of the time I'd even know what it's called or who created it. So I guess the issue is kind of moot. Classical is not exactly my musical forte, I like it but I don't go out of my way to listen to it. On the other hand I'm a huge fan orchestrated movie scores and I have a ton of soundtracks. (Listening to Inception's OST right now,)

I'd say I'm fine with it as long as the piece was appropriate for what was going on in the show, but that really applies to any piece of music no matter what style it is.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has a soundtrack made entirely up of famous classical music, you've got Anton Dvorak playing over spacebattles and it works really well.

It was used in some anime. I was shocked when I heard the tune in Kämpfer.

Absolutely. It's key in setting the mood/atmosphere in an anime. It draws out the emotion and adrenaline. I don't know wtf I'd do if Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen had bad theme music.

Not all of it. Just some of the songs played. Lots of covers of them, obviously.

Ah, sorry I forgot to answer your OP. Yes, it does mean the anime should get praise. It shows that the makers have good taste in music (by either using originals or covers) and that the OST part of the soundtrack got inspiration from great classics.

Just another example that REALLY stuck with me is the animated short from the Genius Party: Beyond collection; Baby Blue. I don't know the name of the song used in the very last scene, but I know it's a classic because it's one of the preset songs on my Clavinova.

Don't know if you're serious or not, but can you post what song track you're speaking of? I didn't remember the OST that well, except for that one piano song, and the "fight" music.. Unless you're talking about that one. Which I guess could be considered classical.

Unless you are trying to be funny or something.

But honestly, one of my favorite things about Death Note is its soundtrack. It is absolutely beautiful.

And Vampire Knight's spectacular soundtrack was it's biggest redeeming feature for me.

Yeah I was talking about the song Swordland. I loosely consider it to be of the classical genre, somewhere between the strings and the choirs.

Entirely depends on the context if you ask me - and also the actual making of the music.

Nodame, for example, uses MANY classic songs because it's a show with a heavy focus on classical music throughout. However, they actually DID have the classic scores played by an orchestra created specifically for the show, along with versions recorded by big name orchestras specifically for the show.

So, while the music's actual score is old, the songs themselves were original recordings.

Also, the S-Orchestra (the one set up specifically for the same-named orchestra in the show) did have 'original' versions of the old scores, with mistakes and alternate styles thrown in for story purposes which vastly change the overall piece and are played specifically for the show. So not only is it 'original' recordings (and they went very far out of their way for the details within the new recordings), but it's also extremely relevant to the series, so I think it deserves praise in that situation.

Also - orchestrated music =/= classical music.

As for classic and original - SAO's OST is by far Yuki Kajiura's most awful composition to date, you should at least pick one of her actually amazing selections.

Hans Zimmer did the music for the Blood+ anime along with Mark Mancina. Neat, huh? It's the only reason I want to watch Blood+ actually.

An anime deserves praise if it's classical soundtrack is integrated well into the show and not just slapped there willy-nilly.
