Just finished this series recently, put it straight into my top 5 fave anime. An absolutely brilliant series and i think it was pretty obvious Ayu's 3rd wish was for a miracle for everyone to get better or something along those lines. I feel that i dont think the series would of worked as well in the end if Yuichi fell in love with somebody other than Ayu, so 10/10 from me and in my top 5.

Dont understand all the clamoring over Mai though seems shes got some fangirls and fanboys, if you wanna see Yuichi x Mai just go play the visual novel its pretty amazing, for an eroge.

I cant find an english version of the visual novel.

OT: I thought the ending was good but an After Story would be awesome too. Great adaption from the 2002 version loved the new animation made it look beautiful!

To be honest, I took a huge liking to Makoto and after she died, I feel like the anime lost it's touch. Why would an extremely sad arc be the first? It should've been Mai's arc, then Shiori, then Makoto, then Ayu. I was hoping that she'd come back at the end, seeing as everyone suddenly got better, but nope. Crushed my hopes. Ah well. The fox at the end gave me hope x3

I really did like the anime but I just felt it was all too rushed. I dunno. I give it a 7.

I made the mistake of seeing Clannad before watching this, so the emotional impact of a lot of the episodes was lessened, I think.

Still, by the last couple of episodes I really appreciated the show for its own unique elements.

The last episode, about halfway through it, I thought to myself that this series was... well, it was like poetry. I don't know why, but that's what I thought. That I had just watched an animated work of art, a poem.

I got a bit teary eyed here and there through the series. Nothing like the sort of crying I got watching Clannad. But still, it was a sweet and touching show.

A work of art, like a poem.

I personally disliked the Ayu ending (and figured Ayu would be the main focus early on) but then again we can't always get what we want so what happened happened.

Overall Kanon was pretty cool. Ayu's ending made it seem that all that was leading up to the end was for nothing-- to me the build-up had to lead to her "inevitable" death (which would have had a bigger emotional impact) instead of having her come back alive and well. This also makes us forget about the other 3 girls

My favourite arc was definitely Makoto's, and after that, Mai's. However, they were overshadowed by Ayu most of the time and their arcs were very short, sadly.

I'm also one of those "watched Clannad before Kanon" guys and instead of focusing on which is better, I took some of the similarities from early on- some of the characters are very similar to ones in the other, which is not surprising at all, of course. I started the list early on and stopped around half way through so it's surely incomplete.

Great anime! I enjoyed watching this a lot!

The ending was great, seems like Ayu's wish was the thing Shiori said..
Everyone survived their casualties, a miracle! That was wonderful.

Did I cry? no.... I had teary eyes at a few episodes, 1 tear left the house as well.

Anyways, loved every single bit of this show, truly a beautiful masterpiece! 10/10.
Did it beat Clannad? No!

I'm sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I'm still incredibly confused by the ending. Is the most logical conclusion is that the Ayu throughout the series (excluding the ending, of course) is a spirit of the Ayu in a coma?

Also, a question about a previous episode: is Ayu legitimately confused when she doesn't see a school (or a tree)? She seems frantic as she checks her bag and says she had seen friends that day, done activities, etc. Has she never gone before?

Sorry if my questions seem elementary. I just marathoned kanon without fully absorbing/understanding everything haha.

8/10 because I'm critical, i'm happy that Ayu woke up later. <33 UGUU~ Btw, the headband never has gotten to Ayu right? it was an illusion that would ease Yuuichi's painful memories. That is all.

I felt this last episode was rushed. I don't understand if when Yuuichi Finds the Hair Band if that's the missing piece, or if he begins dreaming of a place where Ayu is doing better? Really don't quite get the ending, it was still beautiful, it just, hrms... I'm going to have to ponder how to rate this now after that ending.

Finally, the emotional rollercoaster is over. Ending felt a bit rushed, but Really the only girls I felt had a chance with Yuuich, ere Nayuki, Ayu, and Sa Shiori.

Mei and Seyuri are nice girls, and I'd love to know what happened to them afterward, but they were clearly friend zoned. Makoto, could have been super natural or unreal, take your pick, but I did enjoy her character till right before the end. So Yeah I think it had to end up with Ayu. I do hope that Nayuki and Yuuich still stay close as family though, and there's no reason that can't happen.

That final episode seemed a little too sunshine, lolipops and rainbows for me, considering the episode previous, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was happy that everything turned out for the better, especially with Akiko.

Because of the ending I think the series lost a lot of the emotional impact that was built up along the way but I'm still very happy with it =)

I didn't cry during this series(came close though), so I guess After Story still takes the cake, woooo!

9/10. It took until ep 23, but Kanon finally did make me cry (Clannad was the only other anime in the past 5 years to pull that off...out of maybe 150 shows I've seen in that time frame). Much like with Clannad ~After Story~, I am not bothered by getting a happy ending.

Just finished. It's fairly possible that I made a mistake by watching Clannad first, but whatever.

I think what left this show from being perfect is that, while Ayu was always relevant in the show, sort of a build up if you will, she was only really included towards the end. This got me to really bond with the other women in the show during their respective arcs; yes, while I wanted an Ayu ending, I was secretly hoping for a Nayuki/Sayori/Shiori ending. Weird, but that's how I felt.

On the whole, it was a beautiful series that ranks up there with Angel Beats!

Haha damn.......I dunno how many times I've rewatched Kanon and cried........ Lol Clannad.......they just used the character settings of Kanon and added more XD After Story is commendable, but its prequel was.........good and all but compared to Kanon.....kinda dwarfs.

Nagisa=Shiori + Ayu's Miracle(sort of)
Fuko= Ayu + Makoto
Tomoya= Yuuichi but more of a delinquent and does more tsukkomis
Sunohara= Kitagawa
Kyou and Ryou= Kaori and Shiori
Tomoyo= Mai(In terms of strength)

=3= am I the only one who thinks Kanon is better than Clannad? Or at the very least, the first season of Clannad?

Wow, that was great. Like, really great. I enjoyed it a lot. There were definitely pacing issues in the last arc, and I feel like the story could've been executed better and more emotional if they didn't fit it into the limited amount of episodes they did. I have to say that I had never really seen Ayu as a love interest the whole entire show. Although she was clearly the focus (being a character of each arc), she seemed more of a sisterly type of girl and so when they kissed it was so sudden for me, it almost felt fake. All these complaints honestly don't take away from my enjoyment of the show though. I loved Yuuichi's guts and he pissed me off a lot of times but he's a great person at heart. Naiyuki's so wonderful too, being strong and vulnerable at the same time. All the characters were so well-developed; it was amazing. Shiori's return was somewhat sudden to me too, but it was handled well in the time she got.

It might be good to mention that I watched the English dub though, as I have Funimation membership and liked to see it on the site itself. It was a good dub, but I noticed some times when the voices just felt out of place.

Kanon gets an 8/10 for me. I honestly think that it's not on the level of Clannad though. Clannad was a beautiful mixture of emotions and there were such good transitions between arcs, an engaging main romance, interesting side characters, etc. etc. The pacing was much better also. So I don't believe there is even a Kanon and Clannad debate. Clannad is infinitely better :)

I have to say my favorite arc was the Makoto arc. It was the best paced and the whole idea really appealed to me the most.. I bitterly cried at the end too. I just went through so many emotions. I hated Makoto too when she dropped the cat, but then as she started to drift away I felt like I was desperately trying to hold on to her with Yuuichi too :)

Show: 8/10
Episode: 4/5

I swear to god, for the first half of this episode, I half expected Candlejack to crawl out of a tree and drop kick someone in the face...

Good series. I was kinda caught between giving it a 6 or a 7. I think a 6 is more deserving, but I stuck with 7 anyways...

So, if I have this right(>.>) Ayu fell out of tree 7 yrs. ago. Ayu becomes comatose. Yuuichi leaves. 7 years pass. Yuuichi comes back. Yuuichi imagines him giving Ayu the hair band and doing all these things with her because he can't handle the truth. Episodes 1-23 happen. Yuuichi realizes Ayu is in coma. Yuuichi talks to Ayu every day. Ayu wakes up and start to recover. End.

Still dooesn't really account for how Akiko and everyone else saw Ayu running around, because it wouldn't make sense for her to be an illusion to all of them, too, because they wouldn't have the same feelings as Yuuichi. Inconsistent inconsistency is inconsistent. Maybe that's part of the dream? But if it was, that still wouldn't account for how she woke up and how Yuuichi described why he saw her running around as an illusion. Overall, although the characters were good, and the plot was good, the story left a few holes and backtracked on itself a bit. 6.5/10.

I loved the little "Clannad production starting" thing at the end, though. Brings back good memories. CLANNAD <33333333.

He described it an illusion but not in the "I was just trippin" kind of way, rather in the fact she wasn't the physical Ayu. Kanon is probably the Key anime that most abused the "Key magic" crutch (since it's the first VN Key madea although Key's founders had worked on another two titles before it). Basically, the Ayu everyone in town see, including Yuuchi, is the spirit of Ayu that separates from her body whie she's comatose. Whenever Ayu was going "to school" or "heading home" she was unknowingly actually just returning back to her original body which is why she never remembered or noticed anything odd, and it's also why she's afraid of the dark (because she feels like she'll be drawn back to the void of her sleeping self). When she realizes she's actually a spirit she leaves Yuuichi, but it's pretty much implied Ayu remembers everything when she wakes up from her coma.

Honestly, I have a harder time buying Makoto "I'm a fox who stole your first love's name" Sawatari's story, or Mai's "I'm an ESPer who can heal and create spiritual monsters" story, both of which are actually real and not delusions. Honestly, the most normal stories in Kanon are Nayuki's (in which Akiko miraculously survives an accident that she had little chances of living through according the the story) and Shiori's story in which she somehow gets cured (by the power of love I guess) from her fatal disease (which apparently we're supposed to believe it's super fatal even though she shows NO SYMPTOMS).

That's the problem. Everything you brought up in your refutation of what I said(and I'm not trying to spark an argument, because I'd be lying if I said I understood everything, but that's a whole different problem) is a whole new set of problems, the main one being it abuses the shit out of the Magic concept. Is some okay? Yes. Good. We'll accept some.

But, as you said, being forced to accept that Mai was always a spiritual healer and that Makoto was a reincarnated fox, be okay with it, and(worst of all) every character being like, "Oh, of course! Why wouldn't it be like that!" is confusing and irritating.

Haha, actually I know what you mean. There's just too many things that the anime forces you to accept. Mostly it just tells the viewer "miracles happen" and the viewer just has to have some suspension of disbelief. If you look at it in a more "japanese view" a lot of the events are based on Japanese tales, like the Spirits of the living taking form separate from the body, or the Fox Spirits that lived on the Hill, and the town itself is described by several people as a town where miracles can happen.

So yeah, it's not perfect, and it's very unbelievable so I can agree with your opinion. Key actually went on with the japanese folklore inspiration with Air, their second VN (and first KyoAni/Key collaboration) which is also one of their saddest (not even the "miracle" stops Air from having a sad end). And Clannad was able to mix the unbelievable aspects with the more realistic aspects in a very nice way, if you ignore the badly adapted end of After Story.

Ah thanks for explaining this. It seems like a lot of people have bought up a lot of ideas on why other things happen but they always seem to ignore the Ayu part. Now I understand this. From what I've read this seems to make sense. It seems to tie in with another poster's idea when he said the doctor that saw Ayu in the hospital when they met Shiori that one episode was kind of shocked to see Ayu. It would make sense since that doctor probably saw her "other body" before.

I've been hard on this show, but this was a pretty good finale. I didn't like the last minute or so though, kinda felt like that wasn't strong enough to tie it up, but the rest of the finale was pretty good... truthfully I'm still confused about a few things.

7/10. Right girl won, I enjoyed her backstory. 19-24 were good, at least an 8/10, but before that it was just excruciating at times. The arc setup was extremely annoying, that's the bad thing about adapting a VN like this. Makoto is one of my least favourite characters in any anime, Shiori was bland, Nayuki was okay but similarly bland, Mai was cool at times but nothing special. I really liked Ayu though, much better than Nagisa and about even with Misuzu. I felt like a lot of the time the show was trying much too hard to get tears out of me, and some of it was just ridiculous in my eyes (e.g. the Makoto being a fox stuff). Despite my general disappointment in the show I did feel something for it, as I found my mind wandering off for an hour before I could watch the final episode. The focus on memories got to me, you could say.

To sum it up: Kanon is much too formulaic due to its VN format, tries too hard to get the emotions flowing, and contains much too many annoying female characters trying to be cute; however it finishes strong and leaves a lasting effect.

The Final Episode has come to this amazing re-mastered Anime!

There where many differences between the 2002 Version and this version though the main story is still in it and that's what we where looking for!

I did missed some attributes that where in the short story line of the 2002 Version though many other's filled it up with this version!

Some summing that I really missed:

- The radio clock confession from Nayuki
- The kiss between Nayuki and Yuuichi
- The direct parting requiring Yuuichi to leave with a train
- The way Yuuichi finds out about the real Ayu was way weaker in this version
- The first meet with Mai would have been better than already being introduced to each other 2 times before the time at night in the school.
- The more visual connection of that Ayu was an angel and her last wish was to save Akiko.
- The relation between Makoto and Mishio on the hills
- Both Misaka sisters crying on her birthday letting their emotions go!
- And so on!

There are quite a few part's I've missed in this longer story that I thought I would definitely see back as the episode count was longer though they more or less filled it with other things that where also a good attribution to the complete story!

This last episode was really nice though I preferred the more compact ending from the 2002 Version more as it was a race of time and a race for love, with this it all smooth and on going though good in their own way!

I wouldn't say either version was better or worse they have their own differences that makes them unique in their own way, as the main story is the same it's lovely to watch them both if you liked it! After remembering both and taking both fragments together it becomes a really nice and complete story that is hearth warming and tear jerking!

This ending was amazing as well especially when Yuuichi found the Red Hairband and it was a bit confusing when they shown them as 7years ago where than Yuuichi gives the present to Ayu where in the 2002 Version you see her wake up was a bit more emotional than now, though still a nice ending and with the same story plot!

It was a true one in a kind experiance and it was so lovely and sad at the same time! Kanon!

Nice ending =P, I wonder how long in the future that was.

I'm not really a fan of sad endings turned into good endings by miracles, specially when everything went well for everyone, but I won't complain because the past few episodes have been so awesome.
This kind of ending can't ruin it for me ^^
5/5 for the episode, 8/10 for the anime itself

I am getting seriously pissed off at everyone comparing Clannad and Kanon. For god's sake, they're BOTH brilliant shows, why compare?? Though I have to say I prefer Kanon slightly more, just slightly more, because it actually had a decent ending whilst Clannad After Story's was pretty lame. I love both though but if Clannad AS ended like the movie did or even had a totally different ending, it would have surpassed Kanon. I'm surprised Air is hardly being mentioned in this discussion. Seems that not a lot of people love it, which is a downright shame.
They're compared because Key created the originl Visual Novels from which this shows were adapted. And because anyone with half a brain can tell several archetypes are the exact same. You can't blame people for comparing when the shows are done by the same people. It's kinda like compairing two books from the same writer and finding similarities. You can't help it.

And not a lot of people mention Air because of a good reason, it didn't have a happy end and the "Key Magic" was not used to the extent that Clannad and Kanon used it. At most, the supernatural aspect is mostly limited to the premise instead of being shoehorned in to give it a happy end.

I'm Giving This A 10 Because Of Makoto's Arc And Mai's Character.

Also, I'm Still Not Satisfied About Nayuki's Arc.

Honestly I wasn't either, while I understand why they didn't go into detail with it (it was a Nayuki vs Ayu deal) they ould have dedicated an episode or half an episode to him helping Nayuki out f her depression. The way it was resolved it was almost like he went "who cares, Hey Jun, Kaori, deal with the little baby and I'll go track down my ghost girl". Way to be a dick to your cousin Yuuichi.

I also feel quite unsatisfied about Nayuki's Arc...so much that I actually decided to play the game instead of looking it up online. I'll probably try Shiori's Arc as well since she’s is also one of my favourite, probably because hers and Nayuki's arcs were the most realistic to my eyes.

I am also giving a 10 as I believe the characters, soundtracks and the story were all well executed and got my crying so much. Now the only thing left it to shake off this feeling of sadness about finishing this show.

I wouldn't really give this a 10, their were a lot of gaps and how do I put it... blunders I guess. Like for instance the fact that every character had to have a super sad story while Yuichi himself really had no back story of his own. However I really like the ending. Especially when Akiko goes "huh" when Yuichi mentions Ayu's death, I knew then that she wasn't actually dead and that she would probably come back somehow. Also at the very end I saw a lil orange blob which I'm sure in better quality would be a fox hinting that Madoko was alive to meaning nobody died. However I think that I can definitely see a growth between this series and Clannad, and hope to see more by this company since this genre of being semi-dramatic with very loveable personalities while avoiding harems and ecchi isn't too common.

That was KyoAni giving Makoto fans hope. Makoto is very very dead in the Visual Novel. That's the price they pay for turning human. In the VN, the Makoto route ends with Yuuichi pretty much befriending Mishio and her giving Yuuichi her little speech about the town being a town of miracles.

Ayu's story was the most moving to me. I thought she was dead at first because of the angel wings on her backpack, but I'm so thrilled to see she's still alive with long cute hair!!! Overall, a good drama anime that didn't dissapoint at all.

Just finished this series, im glad i saw it. It was funny, sad and sometimes really cute, there is nothing wrong with that, as long it helps to make the story really interesting, and it was.

Great end, i was crying at the very end, but it was ok :)

FUCK YES! She came back, and everyone is all right! I really feared that they were gonna pull a sad ending :/
This was fucking beautiful! ;_;

The characters were all great. Except for Makoto. I'm sorry, but I just found her annoying, she was fine until her arc started though.
I already posted it, but here is my final tier list:
Ayu > Nayuki > Sayuri > Mai > Shiori >>> Makoto
Ayu was simply amazing, I'm really happy she got together with Yuuichi. I really like Nayuki as well, I'm sorry for her, but Ayu and Yuuichi were just meant to be together :/
Yuuichi was of course a great lead (the only thing I didn't like is that I felt like he got way too close to Makoto). All these things must have been really hard on him, just like Tomoya (or well, the other way around). I liked their similarity.
I liked all the other side characters too (Akiko, Kaori, etc).
The arcs were all beautiful, especially the last one (and again, except for Makoto).
I really like that just like with the other Key works, even if they don't really explain the magical things, they still feel natural.

I loved everything about this anime, the comedy, the drama, the art and all that (I love KyoAni!). It really is like a predecessor for Clannad. But still, even with all the beauty, I still liked Clannad a bit more. I can't really say why though. For one though, as sad as this was, it still couldn't make me cry, Clannad is still the only anime to be able to pull that effect from me. But I still had that bad feeling nevertheless.
This was much better than Air, I'm happy I watched that first and saved the better for second.
And now for the final score. As much as I loved it, it still had some minor flaws and the first arc which I didn't like much. So like this, I'm going to give it a 9/10, which means it's truly special in my eyes. I will probably rewatch this beauty someday.

I can sum up this series with a sentence.
"I am a huge sobbing train wreck"
The first time I cried was when Mokoto disappeared, I drooled all over the place and had snot running and got headaches.
The second time was the last episode of Shiori night of her birthday, which broke my heart.
And then between episodes 19-23, I cried a little in each episode basically, here and there.
Then the final, I can honestly say that I cried almost 80% of the episode, it was so brutal.

But some things I could not help wonder, to me it felt like Shioris "end" felt rushed, wisely, she returned to the hospital, but I had been Yuuichi it would have felt more natural if I had tried to contact her again, instead of going he says in the next episode how he loves Ayu ('`;)?

One of the best Key Works I've seen next to Angel Beats! Every work just knows how to make my emotions run down my face. Happy ending was <33333

Although I expected more dramatic ending from this series, I can say that I'm satisfied with it. I believe that such things like Kanon and Clannad makes this world a little better...

GOOD!!!, I gonna miss Kanon (2006) >,<! Really glad it got a happy ending like Clannad :DDD Very well done and memorable :) I really LIKED the part where Yuichi went and found Ayu's headband cause in reality he never gave it to her, that was the MOST touching scene. Extremely happy Ayu and everyone else is back safe and sound. :DDD
