| The story is...horrible. The characters are shallow and it's a show I can't even consider a harem. Normally in harems the girls are somewhat likable, but School Days destroys that trope. Makoto takes the cake for worst MC in anime history. I don't know what girls find some great about him anyways. He starts out as a guy with a crush on a pretty girl (specifically for her breasts) and eventually turns into a manipulative, careless person who knows the consequences of his actions but chooses to still act upon them. And then there's the girls. A girl who could do way better than Makoto is slowly sucked into being his girlfriend. A girl who begins liking him after he admits he has a crush on another girl. Then all these other girls come in as well, one by one having nothing special or likable about any of them, and have sex with this plain, unlikable MC for NO reason. Even the girl who was best friends with Sekai has sex with Makoto. For what reason? NO reason. The story is horrible. But the people who made it executed it perfectly. They made the worst MC possible, and put him with his own harem. The ending made up for the terribleness of the show's premises itself. No one hates School Days for the art or animation. They hate the characters. I too am one of these people. |

| I doubt anything would change OP's rhetorical question. He either A) as he says, sees no problem with the guy or B) is doing the random sarcastic trolling common on the net these days. Either way, Makoto is a douche bag that lacks empathy, or care about anyone for that matter. But for some reason all the girls dig him, with NO reason whatsoever. He isn't physically attractive, he lacks any noticeable personality, and he isn't even charismatic. The episodes led us NO reason to believe why he's remotely likeable. Yet all the girls dig the guy. Even if they do happen to have an excuse for sex, it comes off as extremely superficial and nondeveloped. To reiterate, we've got a piece of work that have NO likeable characters that does things for almost NO reason. I can't call this a complete random piece of crap but it comes close. If it was trying to deconstruct the harem genre, fine, why not, but there are better ways to attempt to tell a story than this. Being a VN adaptation, I can kind of expect why it's lackluster as the directors are trying to follow the source closely, but that's no excuse on the director's part to make such superficial nonsense while trying to be serious about topics like teen pregnancy. A well done adaptation is supposed to change things where it matters. If the story in a VN is crap and you want to adapt it, you better change something instead of following faithfully to generate another piece of crap. |

That is School Day's entire niche. It is suppose to be a breakdown and deconstruction of harems. Instead of having a somewhat boring MC that wants none of the girls and just wants "normal life", it instead features an interesting MC that is either unable to be a heart breaker or the pimp of the school depending on how you view Makoto. The heroines also break the mold, with the stereotypical Mary Sue role being replaced by one girl being cripplingly selfish and the other lacking any confidence, which does not work in a realistic setting as oppose to a fantasy harem. And of course the obvious swap between having a comedic tsundere and revengeful yanderes. I think School Days is a great anime for doing it's moldbreaking role well and having a nice cast. | Just finished School Days. I freaking loved it (No sarcasm). Really. It was entertaining to watch. Seriously.I didn't get angry at how idiotic the cast is, I just sat back, relaxed, and watched the drama unfold. 7/10 for me. |
