It also seems like blue popsicles or shaved ice in an anime is Blue Hawaii flavored. Which I really want to know what it tastes like.

Yep, I noticed it and spent my time looking into why it's so heavily used instead of making a MAL topic about it. Here's some general info: It's soda flavored, has strong cultural iconography(maybe as strong or stronger than Taiyaki), and there is a double-meaning with the color "aoi".

When you mean soda flavored do you mean like cola? Soda can have a lot of flavors.

You'd have to ask Akagi Nyugyo what kind of soda their soda flavor is modeled after.
To me it tastes like Ramune Original, light and sweet but instead of being colorless like the drink the popsicle is blue.

This might be why that is.

It could be something as simple as the bright blue color standing out nicely.

That, or because popsicles in anime are used suggestively a lot, it might be a way to sidestep censors because it's very clearly a popsicle being blue or green or the like.

If you have a peach or orange or chocolate popsicle and then get suggestive with it... it might cross some lines.

I honestly don't find the Ramune flavored Ramune all that great. It's better then seltzer water though. The Ramune that is melon flavored is my favorite.

Stores like 5 Below now sell them, they are worth drinking once for the novelty.

I believe the popsicles in Yosuga no Sora is white, probably milk-flavored. This also can be an analogy for semen.

EVERY. ANIME.

LITERALLY EVERY. ANIME. HAS A BLUE POPSICLE SHOT.

I don’t get it. Those Saitama blue popsicles taste like shit. It’s actually just frozen ice with colouring. It’s not even sweet enough. It’s actually more salty than sweet. It doesn’t even melt properly, it chooses to fall apart is blue ice chunks instead. There’s also supposed to be cream on the inside, which serves no consolation to the shitty taste.

I hate those blue popsicles. But every anime character. Every anime. Blue Popsicles. Why.

I have thought that so many times. Whenever they eat popsicles in anime, it's always blue. No other color. That's apparently the only type of popsicles they have in Japan.

Maybe because it's from a very popular flavor in Japan.

*~~Japanese~~ strawberry shortcake.

It's a spongecake rather than shortcake. Hell, it's not really a spongecake either....angelfoodcake is probably a better relation. So it tastes like sugar air.

The frosting isn't traditional whipped cream. It's stabilized chantilly cream. So it takes like sugar air too.

Together it's this slice of sugar air with some strawberries. Tastes horrible to a non-East Asian palate.

It's a cake that you can get an any convenience store or grocery or bakery. The American equal would be sheet cake. Which you can get from a real bakery or from your local gas station in a tiny per-decorated box. Generic cheap sheet cake. Generic cheap Japanese strawberry shortcake. Hence why it's in anime so often. Because it's the most often bought cake for birthdays, Christmas, and other celebrations.

On a side gripe, Japanese attempts at traditional Western desserts want to make me barf. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you. Fool me 40 more times, shame on the whole country. It certainly does explain why Japan gets last place in taste for the International Pastry Competition all the time so I'm not the only one suffering.

Because it is flan. Flan is originally called creame caramel. Creame caramel has many names in many countries. Like in Brazil it is called "pudim de leite condensado" (condensed milk pudding) because it is made with condensed milk and is a pudding by definition because it has eggs, milk, and sugar and it slow cooked.

Guess what country has trade with Brazil due to WW2 restrictions which explains why Brazilians are their 2nd largest immigrant group?
Japan.

So Japan gets this fabulous dessert introduced to them. And they adopt the first part of the name "pudim de leite condensado"--->"pudim". And of course the traditional Brazilian recipe is Japanified. From personal experience it's really watery--if you leave it out too long at room temp it starts weeping this liquid. And of course more sugar is added as per normal Japanese recipe changes so you're getting cavities just from standing near it.

Wow, I had no idea it has a complicated history behind it.
Now it reminds me of Castella history in Japan, Portuguese Pão de Castela, meaning "bread from Castile", the Japanese had wrong idea about foreign language and its meaning...

Wow. You'd think something like that would be sold world wide.

Anyways, yes it is very cliché. I can't believe that's literally the only Popsicle they eat in every anime I saw.
