Another amazing episode. I fucking love this. Seeing Asuna for the first time in her cloak hiding her face was great. And out of the group, she's the only female? Kirito and Asuna working together was awesome. Really reminding me of Final Fantasy. xD And that combo finisher, omfg <3 Asuna looks so cute without her cloak. Egil seems like a pretty cool character. Loved the scenes with Asuna and Kirito, too good. Diabel being selfish and wanting the Coat of Midnight bonus item. Sad that he died though. Kirito acting as if he's the 'bad guy' of the group and wearing the coat of midnight, making him actually look bad (although he seemed more badass) was a good change for the story. Kirito's now a lone wolf. I'm really curious what's gonna happen next. :DD |

As a LN reader I'm a little sad for the parts left out...but everything that was animated was epic and they were the main points Esp the fight and Kirito pretending to be a bad guy...followed by him leaving in that coat like a boss |

I read ALL the novels and I think it was the right decision to leave these parts out. The story fulfilled its purpose. Liked the episode and didn't think it was rushed. Argo was useless anyway. |

Yo prolly get flame for this, but didn't like this episode, at least compared to the first one which i gave a 10. thought this episode had a lot of "dumb" elements in it ranging from the crazy dude blaming beta testers for random stuff, a beta tester dying by doing the last attack himself for what it sounded like to me to get the bonus item, and that random black guy coming in to cover the main character in his time of need. Also i may be misinterpreting it but when the main character kid was saying, I"M A BEATER BWAHAHAHAHA evil laugh fail, seemed like it was one of the situations where you take the hate of another (beta testers) and make yourself the scapegoat (corny). Another thing (this may not have anything to do with anime), but are the first dungeon bosses in Japanese MMOs really so hard that a someone would die, not from being stupid but the boss using master yi alpha strike on him just to get a OHKO. I understand that ppl claim they like this anime because people die, but that death really just doesn't make an sense to me from an I play MMOs veiwpoint. Final comment, enjoyed the idea of our new female heroin being someone who could be good at a video game until the end whens shes exclaims SO THATS HOW YOU KNOW THEIR NAME, god I hope she was joking because when i saw that i just facepalmed so hard |

Coming from an anime-only viewer, this episode is PERFECT. The fight scene is simply epic, I love how they portray the raid, it's exactly similar to how raids works in MMOs. I don't care if they change/skip things from the LN, because in my opinion, this episode has provided enough information for new SAO viewers to understand the SAO world better. Enough to keep us interested, without adding further complications to the story. After all, people watch animes mainly for the visuals, an anime adaptation can never match its original material in terms of story or depth because of both time and money constraints. LN readers will NEVER be perfectly satisfied with any anime adaptation if they keep expecting the anime to cover the whole original material. Changes happens. Deal with it. |

Final comment, enjoyed the idea of our new female heroin being someone who could be good at a video game until the end whens shes exclaims SO THATS HOW YOU KNOW THEIR NAME, god I hope she was joking because when i saw that i just facepalmed so hard This post is so wrong that I'm not sure how to respond. "crazy dude blaming beta testers for random stuff" So you're playing a game where dying means you're literally dead. There's no way to get out of the game except by beating the 100th floor boss. So people tried to challenge the bosses, but they died because they are newbies to the game. They don't know any tricks to the game, they don't have any information about the bosses, and when they died then that's the end of their real life. But some people who have played the game before and already have experience with the game, doesn't want to share their information to the newbies. So real humans keep dying in the real world, 2000 humans died. Because the beta testers doesn't want to share their informations. TLDR version: It's similar to this. A pandemic is going on in the world, killing countless people. But some people who's got the medicine, doesn't want to share the secrets of the medicine to the world. So people keep dying because of those people. "random black guy" That random black guy you're talking about is one of the beta testers who cleared misconceptions about beta testers earlier in the square. They actually have been giving informations through the guidebook. Re-watch the episode again. "I"M A BEATER BWAHAHAHAHA evil laugh fail, seemed like it was one of the situations where you take the hate of another (beta testers) and make yourself the scapegoat (corny)" Kirito has two purposes, one is to clear public discrimination toward beta testers by directing their hatred to himself, the other is to keep Diabel as a hero and not revealing his true intention to the raid team. "are the first dungeon bosses in Japanese MMOs really so hard that a someone would die, not from being stupid but the boss using master yi alpha strike on him just to get a OHKO" In the beta phase, people could revive all they want without fearing death. They gradually keeps getting better and better the more they died trying. Kirito himself has reached floor 8 in the beta phase. So its not that the boss is hard, its just that newbies cannot try again if they fail. About the "alpha strike", it is normal in an MMO for a raid boss to go berserk when reaching certain HP. Most high-tier MMORPG bosses could wipe off an entire raid team with his killing blow if not evaded with protection spells or evasion maneuvers. Few examples of this is Atlantica Online's shadow dungeon bosses which could wipe 9 units in a blow, Fiesta Online's first lv15 raid boss which needs 15+ people to clear with level 10-20, Dragon Nest's lv24 Minotaur Nest which could reap off 50%ish HP in one Hit, and many more. "enjoyed the idea of our new female heroin being someone who could be good at a video game until the end whens shes exclaims SO THATS HOW YOU KNOW THEIR NAME" As I'm not a LN reader, I can't say this for sure, but for now she doesn't look like someone who is already good at video games (experienced), she is only TALENTED. |

Kirito and Asuna are a splendid team. So the episode mainly focused on the first floor's boss and it did quite a good job at that. It's a shame that Diabel died but his efforts weren't wasted and it enabled our two protagonists to beat the final boss. What I also enjoyed watching, was the group's mentality. Instead of abandoning the other players they defended Kirito and the orange-haired beauty against the Kobold Lord. Very nice touch the writers added there. And so the episode ended with the "beater" and his Coat of Midnight, which by the way, looks ridiculously badass. Let's see how it long it takes Asuna and Kirito to get together again. 5/5 |

wishbook said: Fiesta Online's first lv15 raid boss which needs 15+ people to clear with level 10-20 It has been quite a time since I've played Fiesta online, but is this one of those kingdom quests? The first one was with those slimes if I remember correctly. on topic: no matter how many people say it was rushed, it was a great episode. I do get the feeling that people will be disappointed when the next episode isn't sad enough, because their expectations seem rather high with the mention of tear-jerker, higher than usual. |

I think the way this episode was structured made it so it was hard for people who haven't read the light novel to understand Kirito's intentions at the end of the episode o_O - Diabel's character wasn't explored much - Didn't stress the importance of last hitting - no Argo - ^Kinda Killed the whole mystery aspect of Aria (Reason why Diabel allowed Kiabou to make his speech despite being a beta tester etc.) - And I didn't think Asuna's views on SAO were mentioned enough I'm not raging over it though... I liked it anyway and gave it 4/5, I believe including all of Aria would have lead to some serious pacing issues :/ |

Meh. Why couldn't everyone together make a plan & defeat the enemy all together, without that meaningless death? Either way, all of them are non-development characters; We are not given the reason of why they could not cooperate. Trust issues? In such situations, you have no other choice but to cooperate. And first of all, we weren't told if those people were in bad terms or whatever. Just that guy had a problem with the Beta Testers but later the other guy put him off. |

this episode was trash. I didn't even read the novel. There was so much clitche+cheesy dialogue it just pissed me off. You are in a game doesn't mean you have to act like its been like that your whole life. I know its permadeath but still. They were acting like beta testers were some high class nobles or some shit. Idk the episode seemed trash to me cause of the clitche moments like when the guy was dying. It felt like some of the characters were trying to act cool or something. The first episode was much better. If they don't get rid of these clitches + cheesy stuff and stop rushing it then I will drop. |

Maybe it's because I prefer faster paced anime but I really didn't feel like this was rushed. I actually loved this episode. Not as much as the first one but my only real problem was that I felt like Asuna's fighting skills were only... what Kirito said. I mean, we didn't really see her do much yet Kirito praised her as if she beat the monster on her own. I'd rather hear nothing from him and see her do equally or closely as much as Kirito does. Otherwise, I really love the characters and that they keep it moreor less realistic but like it was said irl those bullies would be bigger douches but I assume it had something to do with the shock of the guy dying and the fact that if there is PvP in SAO, Kirito would kick their ass so no point in pissing him off. |

I thought they did a good job with despite being only 1 episode I felt like it would've been better having 2 episodes for Aria in the Starless Night. Really did prefer Asuna meeting Kiriko based on the novel instead of straight to the boss meeting. I watched ep 2 first then got curious and went to read the novel the anime got me curious of how Asuna fought really well despite being first time in a party not much was explained to me about her she just sorta appear and fought really well glad I read the novel because it helped explained alot of for me |

Not as epic as first episode.... But still very good.... Boss fight was awesome and nicely animated.... But anyway, If Kirito was a beta tester and was able to go up to level 8 why didn't he know where was the last boss in the first level? (may be game levels are different from beta levels). Also I don't think anyone will give up an offering of HP potion, more so if they die for real. 4/5 |

I hope the skill and movement will get better, coz somehow when I see this first boss battle, it looks like an old mmo game, when I see real mmorpg game now, many has nice visual effect and rich movements to SAO, the female character designs really bad ass, especially Asuna artwork BUT male character designs are dissapointed, only main hero is good looking, the rest really looks like peasent LOL, but in OP it seems Klein will be baddass, cant wait to see him again :D and yeah it's still confusing me, is in LN all the players dont intimidate girls ? or the reason Asuna wore a cloak is to cover herself not to be targeted by pervert players ? please LN reader tell me |

The first episode made a rly good impression on me but this one was average at best for me. The whole thing with the dying dude seemed so fast and forced and then you had that dramatic bg music and I felt so out of it. I hope they progress more normal and they don't just force you to feel sad over a chara you barely saw. His death wasn't rly as sad as they made it to be. Especially since a minute before he seemed like a jerk who tried to be the one to get the last atk so he'd get the bonus and then he just dies slowly saying it's for everyone... And Kirito takes it upon himself to be hated and feared/admired so he can help them all... Mehhh~ |

:DD what does Coat of Midnight do anyways and was kirito the only one who got it? Nothing special. Yes, Kirito is the only one to own it. Boss last hit special bonus. Provides him with a cute moment with Asuna <3. By the way, just found an inconsistency! “It’s almost winter now… I should buy a coat too. Which shop did you buy that from?” --(when Kirito covers her with the Coat of Midnight to hide from The Army) She was there when he got the loot ... EDIT: HikaruIzumi said: Maybe it's because I prefer faster paced anime but I really didn't feel like this was rushed. Because she showed promising skills. Reaction time is one of the biggest factors to how good you are at a <<Full Dive>> game, just like in Accel World. And, there is in fact PvP in SAO. About the part on the spoiler That part is when they are on like the 74ish floor :S not from this episode Exactly. |

Only about a little less than half of those in Starting City actually went out on the fields. These players are all on the field, so losing around 1800 players in the field (already subtracted the 200 or so who died because of their families' actions) means losing around 36% or more of the field clearing crew. If you're a clearer, you'll probably make friends with people on the field, which basically means losing 3-4 people out of ten you made friends with in the past month. Kibaou's point was that the death rate would have gone down if the beta testers had shared information, and, of course, was refuted by Egil, as beta testers had already given information in the free guide book. I guess a good way to imagine it is 40% of your friends dead, or 40% of your school died in a situation where a group of people could have stepped in, taken charge, and thus would lower the mortality rate greatly, thus your best friend may not have died. The difficulty of SAO's bosses may be akin to greatly beefed up Dark Souls bosses. Of course, the tutorial boss in Dark Souls was no pushover the first time the player meets it. |

The truth is that: Kirito is wearing a different jacket (his 4th black jacket) on vol. 1 instead of the <Coat of Midnight> acquired in the episode. Still, I like how the episode plays out. The emotion, the animation works, and the struggle facing the first boss really draws me in like I'm playing with them. 4/5 |

From the comments it sounds like it's better to watch the anime before reading LN/manga. Both episodes don't seem rushed (as an anime-only viewer), though ep1 should've explained more of the exposition. As presented, ep1's nervgear setup sounds ridiculous, but accepting that as premise, ep2 follows quite well with the initial infodump then action. I also got what Kirito meant w/o needing the LN explanation, put up the public Lelouch-mask for the greater good. But didnt know what's a "beater" until: http://swordartonline.wikia.com/wiki/Beater Asuna's bendy light looked like a chinese broadsword that looks quite fast. After her cape disappeared, notice her sword shifted to her left hand to thrust better. w/o Kirito blabbering, it's obvious she has great reaction speed. |
