Do you, as an anime fan, also enjoy My Little Ponies?

| So I'm running under the assumption that everyone here likes anime to some degree. I'm sure the levels vary, but that's not the point. I used to always assume that My Little Ponies was something enjoyed mainly by anime fans and something that anime fans, in turn, accepted. I thought it had elements that were generally appealing to anime fans. I am now however seeing that this may not be the case. So please, enlighten me with your opinions. I'm curious about this, so elaborate as much as you can. And please, for the love of God, do not flame each other. State your opinion and respect everyone else's. =) |

EsPwnage said: My little ponies? Haven't watched it since I was 3, even though it's aimed towards girls I still don't know why I watched it? Not really sure if it's an anime or a cartoon? Oh, my Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic is a new My Little Ponies cartoon made by Lauren Faust, same woman responsible for Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home, and others. It's popular these days among all ages, the most prominent being grown men, known as 'bronies'. Because of this little factor, I assumed it went hand in hand with anime fans as well but I'm learning that that isn't really the case. I'm trying to understand the phenomenon- I like the show but I'm a female and I am an illustration major, which is closely tied with animation at our school. It's a known fact that animators like cartoons. =) So I figured that discovering who it appeals to might help me figure it out. |

| I avoid it like a plague just because of its name and how it normally gets talked about on the internet, so I have absolutely no clue about it at all. I think I would like it to stay that way, though. |

| I've seen some of it when I was sick the other day since it actually runs on tv here on the kiddy channel. (i was hella bored okay) and well I don't get the hype, while it's definitately better tha about 90% of the other crap they show us on those channels nowadays, it's not really that special either. But that's just my opinion i'm sure the bronies have their valid reasons to like this and even if they don't have them i don't mind them enjoying it. it's just not my thing. |

I'm glad you posted this, because this is the EXACT reason that I assumed many anime fans liked it. I mean, I feel like it has the same appeal as something like Lucky Star- Same color scheme, it's bright, colorful, funny, and super cute. Thus is my confusion. I'm not saying anyone should or should not like it- to each their own of course- I'm just trying to figure out who does and does not like it and why, because both the disdain of it AND the phenomenon confuse me. |

People dislike it because the fanbase is a cancerous tumor on the underbelly of the internet that needs to be purged with fire. Only the most socially awkward scum of the Earth call themselves "bronies". Normal well-adjusted people will just call themselves fans, or better yet, do this: ![]() That and it really doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything and people probably expect more from all the hype. In the end it's just a cute, above-average kids show that gained popularity in strides because "OMG it's so ironic to like a show for little girls". Or at least that's how it started out on /co/, nobody now seems to get the initial joke. |

| I liked it during the first season. It was refreshing to see an American cartoon that didn't rely on Spongebob-esque brain-dead sociopath humor. There was real meaning to it, lessons to be learned, like the cartoons of old. It still has some of that, but the show's become more sadistic and poorly written in the second season. |

| I consider myself a brony. To be honest, I like M.L.P. for many of the same reasons that I like anime in general. One of the main reasons being the cute characters. Another being that it is an uncommon guilty pleasure IRL.( and I like liking uncommon things). To answer the OP's question, the best thing M.L.P. has going for it is the colorful characters. I assume that that is why most people who've watched M.L.P. became fans. Besides that, the plot(s) are silly overall, but amusing for the most part, so its worth watching. Better than a ton of random junk anime and cartoons I've seen anyway. Plus, its naturally in English, so I get to fully enjoy it, since I've never been able to fully get into subbed anime. To the people who don't/stopped watching it because its growing fanbase: WTF? What a stupid reason. I bet you avoid mainstream anime too, huh? If you really think its popular, see how many people have heard of this newer series in real life? To all the others raging out/offending the show/prejudging it: Chill out. Its just a form of entertainment. @sleeplesstown I consider myself a "brony" and I even wore a Spike(the baby dragon) T-shirt to college today and one of my friends wore a brony shirt. I won't respond to the "socially awkward" comment, as that is obvious trolling, but I will agree that people are expecting too much from this due to the hype. |

Edit: Oh and to Anime_Name- It's not actually as simple as that. As you've seen in this thread some people really hate it, and others are indifferent. I suppose I could have phrased the question better, but I wanted to know how many anime fans like it, how many are against it, and how many just shrug their shoulders at it. Also, how many people desire some super tasty tacos. |

Well, in my opinion.....Most american cartoons are straight up terrible, save for a few like MLP:FIM, Adventure time, and Boondocks (yes i liked Boondocks lol). There are a few others but i can't really think of them. However, that being said i'll watch the first epsiode and give it a try to see if i like it. I actually didn't know MLP:FIM was famous until last September and i saw numerous parody trailers featuring the show, and gradually watching those gave me the courage to try the show out since in the beginning i had the same mindset as everyone else when My little pony comes to mind, it was a show for little kids. After watching it, i got hooked on it and started watching episodes in-between intermissions of League of Legends sessions with my team and finishing off the first season, i haven't seen the second season yet though, only bits and pieces. I like the show, and i wont hate on anyone who does or doesn't. It's their opinion, but honestly to all the people saying "No", can you please stop passively insulting people who do watch the show? I noticed a few instances on the first page. All you need to say is "No i do not watch it" not "No i don't watch it, because it's a show for babies" etc. It's funny you make this topic though because just last night i found MLP:FIM on Netflix and i had my nephews in here watching it with me, both of them are boys too. I was like "What's wrong with MLP?" and they said it was for babies. Sat them down and made them watch a few episodes and they stayed til they fell asleep. Just to clarify. We're talking about My Little Poiny: Friendship is Magic.....This is a must! You HAVE to get it right....Because yes...the other franchise of MLP is babyish. You absolutely CANNOT confuse the others with Friendship is Magic. |

Some people hate them, but there are some anime in those genres that they end up liking because they actually gave it a chance and watched it instead of judging it by its cover.I watched an episode and it made my feeble mind question my sexual preference. GET AT ME BRONIES. There's absolutely nothing in MLP that screams "little girls" aside from the pink color used. Ironically, the pink pony on the cover is the most hilarious and craziest ( also made famous by fan fiction that depicts her as someone that decapitates her friends ) of all the main cast in the show. So again, don't judge a book by its cover. |

It's a harem series based on a harem game, where you, as a guy, decide which girl to court. | When you have little sisters like I do, you sometimes end up seeing things on TV you had no intention of ever actively viewing. To be honest, the show is pretty hilarious, and not what you would expect from something supposedly targeted at a young female audience and named "My Little Pony". Despite this admission, I don't actually watch it regularly, and if anyone calls me a "Brony" he'll find himself missing a few teeth. |

| My perspective on MLP:FiM is very much shaped by an excessive amount of time watching the industry change over time. American cartoons, like anime, are very much prone to excess. Once a hip, emerging trend is detected, a large part of the industry tends to shift, ever-so-slowly, in that direction. Whether it be dating-sim adaptations in anime or abstract animal grossout sitcoms in cartoons, we all notice it. In the early 90s, American cartoons were profoundly changed by the likes of the Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, and independent cartoons of the Liquid Television-type, both visually and thematically. In contrast to the simple toy commercials of the 80s, these were subversive, self-referential, and always had an "edge", whether it was an satirical, nonconventional storyline, grotesque character design, or some intentionally offensive plot element. This was further compounded into the 2000s by SG:C2C, ATHF, South Park, Family Guy and the like. The "edge" had to be maintained and pushed further. The new MLP is none of that. It is a straight up morality play that deliberately abandons aspirations of hipness. (Some might say this is because it is targeted to the little girl demographic, but then again, so was the very "hip" Bratz -- If I had a 5-year-old daughter, I know which one I'd want her to watch.) It is a completely old-style television cartoon with a good message (even using the classic standard of restating it at the end) and a commercial intent that is sufficiently well-hidden. Not that it was the only show that had attempted this in the last decade, but good production values combined with an overall attitude in storytelling most hadn't seen for a while made for a successful mix. Hopefully MLP doesn't deviate too much from the original formula (and certainly doesn't bend the whims of its rabid fanbase, which displays equal elements of creative talent and DSM-IV conditions), because if they try to go after the "edge" as so many have before them, then the show will have lost something very valuable. |

So.. <img src="http://i.imgur.com/jx3ZG.jpg" /> PFFFT that picture is beautiful. I understand where you're coming from too. I was very afraid of rage-posts, but have been quite impressed at how collected most people have been about it. I also find it amusing and enlightening that the responses from bronies are more intelligent, mature, and well thought-out than that of those who are against the show. And I'm not referring to the people who didn't seem to mind it either way- I specifically mean anyone who, in essence, said "no it's crap' with either a very short, uninformative or no explanation whatsoever. This in itself actually aided me in my info-gathering (for no specific purpose other than curiosity) on this subject. I also find it interesting that only 5 people hit "No it's a stupid American cartoon" while 11 hit "I don't care either way". I'm assuming some of these people actually would have put no, but did not want to vote for such a bigoted option, which was absolutely made so on purpose by me, once again, out of curiosity to see why and where some of the hatred came from. |
