According to The Association of Copyright for Computer Software, 23 Prefectural Police Departments have conducted a wholesale arrest of internet users who uploaded illegal materials via P2P software Share. They have searched 50 places from January 11th - 14th and arrested 18 people. This was the second nationwide roundup of illegal uploaders. 11 people were arrested last November and all of them have already been sentenced guilty.

List of the arrests related to anime and manga:

i am just thinking, are they trying to send a message that we can catch you whenever we want, or with all the resources they have, the could only manage 18 people.

I salute those brave soldiers (except the one sharing Bleach, we don't need any more of that stuff over here) that make my hobby a reality. May your ass rest safely in prison.
It's not like anyone in here doesn't watch anime in a way that is inconvenient for those companies producing it.
If I were in that kind of situation, being arrested, I would take every single on of you with me. E V E R Y S I N G L E O N E O F YOU.

It's not like they didn't ''persuade'' the officer in some way to let them go if that were to happen.

They do but I would think they would have more downloaders than uploaders. It just takes one person to upload a thing for everyone to download.

Things to think about

1. 16 of them have jobs. So they're not NEETs or otaku out to ruin the world. Rather they're considered "productive members of society" and about half of them are salarymen.

2. All are male and use the software Share. So if you're using it to upload stuff get the hell off.

3. Of the 18, only 4 of them uploaded manga. Does this mean that there are few uploaders of manga, or are the powers-that-be lenient towards manga uploaders?

4. The age range really doesn't fit the otaku stereotype

Just some observations that aim to shatter the stereotypical "crazed otaku out to destroy the world"

To be honest I don't think they're very interested in downloaders. After all, it can become very complicated e.g. hosting sites, scan groups, overseas downloaders etc. Then are you going to arrest the guys who watch off youtube or read off a hosting site? I assure you Japan's prisons aren't big enough for all of them.

Plus if I remember correctly a mangaka has set up a site to legally host manga for download. This complicates issues a lot more, doesn't it?

Japan has laws against illegal uploads, but none against downloading those illegal uploads, unless they changed it (I remember hearing something about that... can't remember though).

Most uploaders use Perfect Dark now anyway, share is kinda outdated...
