What are your thoughts? I was surprised that it was mostly white people who like Anime. As an Asian I thought Anime was more popular among Asians, since it is made in Asia, you know?

Link is below for anyone who wants to actually read the article.

This survey doesn’t represent the demographics of anime fans worldwide. It says 100% of the respondents are from the United States.

Given the fairly small number of Asians and Asian Americans in the US (currently estimated to be around 6-7% of the whole population), these results really aren’t that surprising.

Western media really tends to demonize white men. Really makes anime a lot more appealing imo. I am but just another chud weeb.
That being said, I do not use crunchyroll.

It is clear anime is largely enjoyed by foreigners globally, and these statistics really show it.

I don't think these statistics matter. And the OP's account is over 12 years old, yet he has a mere 7 posts? Something seems off about that tbh.

Going back to the original discussion, it does not surprise me that most anime viewers are Caucasian. In fact, I would be surprised if that wasn't the case. I don't think the ethnicity of anime viewers matters. But it does not surprise me most anime consumers are Caucasian, given how most anime are centered around European fantasy themes.

i think it's the non-Asians who actually got anime into the global popularity/reach that it's today. Honestly dumb mindset that 'oh it's made here so it should be more popular here' like nothing in reality works like that not even food, it's more important that it's actually liked by so many

Anime is more popular in Japan and China, then it is in the US.

These stats are for America, which isn't a country known for high asian % rate. If anything there's a lot of asians watching in America relative to average population.

either it's those Asians have moved there or those who are American-Asians, here isn't really considered ppl who are half something, it's either one nationality or not. Obv those who are half something, usually gain the culture from other parent as well and they aren't 100% just the other parent

@ACasualViewer But it's even more for white people in terms of relative percentage

White population is 60%. The census being 7% higher
Asian population is 7%. And the census being only 3% higher

My takeaway from this is that white Americans are more Asian than Asian Americans are Asian.

Looks about right for the states, yeah. The one thing I'm kinda surprised is them not including latino/hispanic as a response.

The percentage of anime fans identifying as white drops from 77% for the Boomer generation and drops to 58% in Gen Z. Meanwhile the black / African American group has grown from 7% in Boomer to 23% in Gen Z.

I'm not sure there's a better stat to explain the rise of naz- er, I mean apolitical neckbeard anime "fans" in the past decade.

This does not represent anime fans as a whole just American Crunchyroll users. In the US Asians are only around 6.7% of the population but consist of 10% of that Crunchyroll polling. Blacks are only 12.6% but make up 17%in that poll. Whites assuming if they exclude White Hispanics are 57.5% but are 67% of that poll which makes me think it is possible they are including White Hispanics as White when usually they are separate listed. There also is issue of racial identity being self determined where different sub demographics may identify different.

Crunchyroll is for people in the west. The west doesn't have nearly as many Asians as white people.
Also, Asian for purposes of these kinds of polls isn't just east Asians, but also people from places like India and such.

@RushingSugar

The US also considers people from India and the middle east to be asian, so it might be misleading.

Meanwhile, I don't know where hispanics are in this demographic data at all. Are they considered white?

Have you read the article, comrade?

It specifically said the USA.

People in China mostly use iQIYI when watching anime or go through the dark route in a pop up website that would be often hosted in Thailand.

People in South Korea almost always use streaming apps like Laftel or TVing when watching anime.

Personally, I don't think Asian-Americans would be capable of representing Asians living in Asia. I'm also half-Asian who is now settled in Asia, so this is a touchy subject. And no, I ain't a US citizen.

Edit: Also, there is an impression among native English-speaking people that "all people" in Asia, specficially East Asia and Southeast Asia, are often American-ized, this was never the case.
