Different views of certain anime caused by generational gap?

Recently on Twitter I saw people comparing Kitsu's top anime with Letterboxd's, but saw a very interesting comment: "Kitsu might be gen alpha's recency bias, but Letterboxd's is just Millenial's".

That indeed got me thinking, since me, being a zoomer, noticed in real time how me and the rest of my generation care way less about Toonami stuff such as Akira, Bebop, FLCL, Trigun and etc

Are different views of certain anime caused solely because of a difference in generations?

Yes if you are older you probably think all the older anime are the best and the new ones just come short or there is a few that are the exception.

No, the language barrier is also a major factor.

Oh definitely. Media you're exposed to during your formative years will always have more impact than stuff you come across much later. Not saying that your favourites can't still be something recent as an older person, but those earlier ones will probably receive a subconscious mental boost just based on when you consumed them.

Yeah, that's natural, since they have not been exposed to such anime early on, they would naturally have different views on them and would mean less to them than it did to prior generations.

Different views are caused by humans being different, birth year is just one of many factors.

From my observation, zoomers are way less tolerant towards the ecchi genre than boomers.

THIS.

"Nostalgia bias" is the worst thing you can do to yourself and the anime/manga industry

Watched so many anime, that i find hard to have interest in new show, because plot/trope keep repeating, 80% of time i know where the story go, so i got bored.
Praise the Sun! That we are born in this era, to watch anime.

Yes. Lack of exposure is a huge thing. The newer generation might like "newer" anime like Demon Slayer, JJK, Solo Leveling etc. But for people who've been watching anime it's nothing special. It's the same tropes and ideas being repeated. I rewatched Yu Yu Hakusho properly a few years ago and JJK almost feels like a rip off. Mostly from the Snuff Tape arc. Domains, Sukuna, The main villian whose name I forgot etc are all heavily inspired from there.

Anime itself has changed over the years. Newer shows focus more on Flashy animation, faster pacing, being more accessible, trendy tropes etc compared to older shows. Hell something that annoys me a lot is that every character behaves almost the same these days with the character mannerisms, dialogue and tropes. Not saying there aren't great shows like Dungeon Meshi, Orb or Apothecary in but most of shows follow a similar pattern which is frustrating to see.

Zoomers generally have a warped perception of Anime in the West before their time. This alone could be the huge difference in different generations that came one after another. As an example, "Akira" never once aired on "Toonami". lol "Akira" actually dates back way over a full decade before even "Cowboy Bebop", "Trigun", "FLCL", etc... ever even platformed on Cartoon Network in the West.

Infact "Cowboy Bebop" and "FLCL" only ever aired on Cartoon Networks "Adult swim" too. I even remember the 1st time Cartoon Networks "Adult Swim" actually started pumping out Anime beyond just "Dragon Ball Z". They use to only air shit like "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" and "Sealab 2021" until 2001 when "Adult Swim" went full throttle with Anime in their line up with shit like "Cowboy Bebop" and "Lupin III: Part II" along side western shit like "Home Movies", "Oblongs", "Futurama" etc... Soon after shit like "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and the "The Venture Bros." join in along side other Anime titles such as "Neon Genesis Evangelion", "Samurai Champloo", "Black Lagoon", etc...

Infact "Trigun" didn't even start airing on "Toonami" until a year after it aired a full year re-run cycle on Cartoon Networks "Adult Swim". Where anything that 1st aired on "Adult Swim" was even more censored and edited if it ever even reached the "Toonami" time slot. Where one of the ironies about all this was "Cowboy Bebop" even on "Adult Swim" was censored the shit out of, reducing the profanity being used throughout the entire series along with cutting out a very short nipple scene, and it still never once aired on "Toonami". lol

"Toonami" only aired 24 of the 26 episodes of the "Outlaw Star" because they cut two episodes out completely from their cycle which included nudity (ironically MAL labels that shit as "Specials", when those episodes originally aired within the actual series in Japan and even still chronologically in the 1st western physical disc releases). lol

"Akira" in the West fits more in with "Robot Carnival", "Bubblegum crisis", "Wicked City", "Appleseed", "Black Magic M-66", "Devil Hunter Yohko", etc... where during this Era in western fandom, Anime was called Japanimation in North America. This should be a completely different time period for Anime in the West, sperate from the "DBZ" and "Pokemon" days. lol

Anyone who didn't grow up with shit would obviously care less about something over those who did. If one didn't get to see "Golgo 13: The Professional", "Vampire Hunter D", and "Ninja Scroll" screening on the same night in a theater at a one night, one time, animation film festival weekend, it would be hard for someone to relate to such an experience for anyone who did experience that type of shit back in the early 90s in the West.

It's weird because I'm frequently told millennials hate mecha anime. But Toonami and Adult Swim were full of mecha.

Gundam Wing, G Gundam, Gundam Seed, Zoids, Big O, Eureka 7 all started on cartoon network from 2000 - 2005.

Toonami even had giant robot week lmao.

Oh igpx too. And the often(and well deserved) forgotten shows. Blue Gender and Pilot Candidate.

Otoh. Zoomie zoom zooms really hate mecha.

Watching Cowboy Bebop on late-night TV in 2001 feels different than bingeing it on Netflix in 2025... Or Someone who watched Evangelion during a personal crisis, see it as life-changing.. I see it as adding to depression.
Another watch it years later, after hearing all the hype, and feel underwhelmed.
Social media creates echo chambers of hype, memes, and discourse that shape how we should feel about a show. It's like Watching madao for me, I went from laughing at him, to being him and getting laughed at.

"Different views of certain anime caused by generational gap?"

This is expected, isn't it?

"care way less about Toonami stuff such as Akira, Bebop, FLCL, Trigun and etc"

We didn't had Toonami on cable in my country, so maybe liking Akira, Bebop and FLCL, but disliking Trigun is my genuine reaction?

My impression is that boomers and GenX-ers (like me) in general have a bit more respect (only a little) towards titles created before they were born.
As opposed to millennials who respect only shows created after their birth and zoomers who respect titles created only recently (like max 3 years from the date of the conversation).

I guess this is how the zaitgeist is changing.

Also it's worth mentioning that despite internet, globalisation and stuff like that, said generations have some ocal temporal and cultural variations. Not all people from certain "time stamp" are similar. They may have different dominating traits or show similar traits in different times.
