What do you think about horror genre in anime? Is it possible in anime to scare and terrorise? Why?

Have you ever seen some anime that scared you?

sometimes they can be scary. I admit the shadow realm stuff in yugioh is prime nightmare fuel.

As for legit horror anime, it doesn't scare me. It's mostly demons and monsters and that's not really something i'm afraid of. In fact, monsters make me think of Yugioh.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I usually don't find horror anything to be scary, just suspenseful. Although the movie 1408 and the game P.T. game me some spooks.
As for anime, it's usually too campy like Junji Itou or Kyochuu Rettou or too cute like Mieruko-chan to be scary. The closest to scary I've seen is Higurashi first season, some parts of Dark Gathering, and Perfect Blue.

The vast majority do not scare me in the "true" (physiological - increased heart rate, holding breath or uneven breathing, pupils dilating, nightmares, and/or lingering on the mind as intrusive thoughts afterward) sense but the vast majority of horror in other mediums including live action cinema and TV doesn't scare me either since I've seen a boatload of horror and became desensitized to it through repetitive exposure from a young age (but honestly, I always had a propensity to become drawn to and fascinated by it, which is why it became an obsessive focus in the first place and this overrode much of any impulse of fear).

The few exceptions are some of season one of Higurashi - though it's something I more conceptually find profoundly disturbing, although on the first viewing was purely experience-based.

And one or two specific scenes in Urasekai Picnic.

Dark Gathering is the only horror anime I actually found scary.
I mean it wasn't making me terrified or anything, but it was really creepy at times.

Honestly I've never found horror anime to be very scary. Maybe because it's animated, but it just never has spooked me very much beyond the video game genre.

@Zarutaku yeah, it feels like a thriller at first (because of Nakamura stalking Kasuga everywhere and forcing him to do various things) but then you finish that incomplete anime and start manga and realize it's a slice of life, coming out of age and drama stuff instead.

I enjoy horror anime but they've never scared me, not once

Shiki made me a bit uncomfortable a few times, but that's it

The only one I found geniunely disturbing (in a good way) was Perfect Blue, but I wouldn't say it scared me

@tchitchouan So books can never be scary, they're just letters and words. And movies can never be scary, they're just actors and special effects, right?

@KMIR Yes, books on their own can't be scary, what's scary is your imagination interpreting what's written on in the book if it's fiction and the consequences of what the book encourages if it's a dangerous manifesto or a particularly violent call for action book like mein kampf. Live Action Movies on the other hand can be scary if done well especially if it's grounded in reality and the special effects are done really well to mimic real life with gruesome monster design and anatomically accurate dismemberment, blood and gore, or in other cases psychological and survival horror blended with mystery, intrigue and thrills. But anime can never ever ever be scary it's just a drawing, it's lacks the dark grit and groundedness of realism, thus anime horror is disturbing but never scary.

Horror anime can be creepy but they are generally not scary. The one I found most scary was the first arc of the first season of Higurashi.

@tchitchouan Interesting... I agree with some parts, but anime could be scary if it shows a good atmosphere and direction like in some scenes in Perfect Blue, Higurashi no Naku koro Ni or Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu, right? Well, I don't know if 'scary' is the precise word in english, but kind of.

There's 2 type of horror anime, Gore and Supernatural.

I think Gore horror are generic that become boring to me, I need more Supernatural horror anime.

So far only 2 Supernatural Horror for the last decade, it's Mieruko-chan and Dark Gathering

we need to separate them from the concept of horror that Hollywood or video games gave us.
For example, I consider the first season of Re:zero to be very horror!

@KMIR I know exactly what you mean, but scary isn't the right word to describe horror anime, more appropriate words are like suspenseful, intriguing, unsettling, thrilling, anxiety-inducing, gripping, unnerving, disturbing, perturbing, discomforting, uneasy, agitating, bothering, deranging, upsetting, confounding, perplexing, rattling, psyching but NEVER SCARY, the word SCARY OR FRIGHTENING should never be used when discussing anime because anime by its very nature can never be scary it is just a drawing, an imaginative representation of something gruesome in 2D or 3D art, in its essence horror scares because it leans on people's fear of the unknown be it objects, creatures or other people grounded in the mudane routine of everyday life and reality. Anime is 2 steps removed because on one hand it's not real at all, it's just a 2D/3D drawing and second anime art is too clean and cute to be scary and thus for those 2 very reasons anime horror can never be scary.

Yes:
- Magase Ai from Babylon.
- Frill from Wonder Egg Priority.
- Houseki no Kuni's setting.

Creating scary settings or characters are pretty hard. I don't even know a single live action that was actually scary and partially that's why my examples aren't from horror shows - except maybe Houseki no Kuni that can be counted as a body horror show.

They can be scary although they're usually not
They'd be much more scary if they didn't rely on jumpscare and attempting to make scenes appear more gruesome by showing a lot of blood
Psychological horrors such as Monster(although not a real horror,it does have that atmosphere)are an example of a scary horror

Horror anime is fundamentally impossible because they make all the girls cute. The best they can do is psychological horror, but then they even mess that up by making a meme out of it (Another and the ridiculous deaths).

No, animated horror is not scary, the best it can do is be a little creepy or disturbing. The horror genre relies on it's realism to be scary, and animation is too unrealistic.

@Zarutaku Well, I strated reading the manga because it doesn't have that horrible rotoscoped art style, even if it still looks very mediocre.
1 volume in it's not creepy, just disgusting...

@Zarutaku Horror manga is generally considered better than anime...
Either way, maybe the music is good in the show, but the frames are first and foremost ugly.

Well, Hirugashi is my favourite horror anime. Because of that one Yaoi scene where Keiichi, & Satoshi finds themmselves in black bunny costumes, & Satoshi then slowly feed him yogurt with the spoon in his hand.
Heres the video:
