A thread inspired by @149597871 and his tendency to remind me I never watched a lot of well-known movies. Let’s suppose someone like me wanted to watch more movies but didn't know where to start, then which movies would be your very first recommendations?

Also, since not many users seem to wander into this sub-category, I’ll shamelessly allow myself to tag some of you in the hope of some answers: @CC, @Daviljoe193, @Deathko, @deg, @GinInYourJuice, @Kwanthemaster, @LabMemberX, @Little_Sheepling, @LoveYourSmile, @MalchikRepaid, @Noboru, @NS2D, @Nysse, @Purple_Gh0st24, @Retro8bit, @Szczelajo, @TheBlockernator, @waferish, @Zakatsuki_, @Zarutaku

You know PV is going to show up and recommend some cult film you definitely don't care about, right?

Another hero? Oh, please!
You're a god-damn philistine.

@CC I take it you're talking from first-hand experience.🤭Well, I didn't ping him for many reasons but I guess that's one of them.

I think Love Exposure and Battle Heater Kotatsu are peak Japanese craziness movies.
And uhm...I guess the Jurassic Park & World movies are all pretty solid and enjoyable, but I'm assuming you might have already seen those 😅

@deg
Everything Everywhere All At Once: I did watch it because a friend almost pleaded me into it... It was alright.
Inception: I have the vague memory of trying to watch it as a teen but dropping it because I found it boring (I'm sorry).
The One: I think I literally never heard of this movie before today.
Edge of Tomorrow: I watched it because I read the manga (All You Need Is Kill). It was not bad but I'm not really a fan of the modified ending.
Looper: Never watched that one too.
The Matrix movies: Only watched the first movie. It was decent, I guess.
Lord of the Rings movies: Never watched any of them, and are pretty much the reasons @149597871 started to tease me over not watching movies.

@Little_Sheepling I pretty much saw all the old Jurassic Park movies but only watched the first Jurassic World. I think they made a bunch more afterwards, but I somehow never heard much good about them...

Considering how much you haven't seen, it's better to go for the pretentious movie elitist character build instead. Go watch everything made by David Lynch and Lars von Trier. Then infiltrate some post-graduate art critic social circle in central Europe and explain the ingenuity of Dogville or something like that to the hottest and least crazy girl you see in there. Easy win.

Disclaimer: Before you guys say anything, I'd just like to point out that I actually like Dogville. Its chalk-outline sets aren't minimalist at all but rather the exact opposite in their exposure of human depravity, and by stripping away scenery, von Trier forces us to watch the characters with nowhere left to hide. It's absolutely ingenious! (You can borrow these lines, yes.)

In my opinion you should watch all those movies:
- Big Trouble
- The 24th Day
- Four Brothers
- Lords of Dogtown
- Man on Fire
- Meet the Browns
- Madea Goes to Jail
- New Year's Eve
- The Three Stooges
- Machete Kills
- Fading Gigolo
- Chef
- Wild Card
- Hot Pursuit
- Bent
- The Female Brain
- Bottom of the 9th
- This Is Me... Now

there is a little thing they all have in common, i think you will quickly get it, i did watch (almost) all of them, some of them were ass, but Sofia is worth it.
(unfortunately i wasn't joking about watching all those movies)

And i'm really not a good person to recommend movie simply because i've chosen to not invest time in it despite my love for it, i rather have a lot of knowledges on a few domain than less knowledge but on more domains.
Most of them were all super-heroes movies.
But i've watched some other things and will only recommend you two

The blind side, that's my fav movie outside heroes, i watch it every summer, idk why tho.
Taxi Driver (i think you've already watched it tho, he's extremely popular)

My favorite movies:

The Professional

No Country For Old Men

Conner/Moore/Brosnan James Bond

Austin Powers

The Last American Virgin

Mask (1985, the Rocky Dennis movie, not the Jim Carrey comedy)

Sleepaway Camp 1-3 (skip the return, it's trash)
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Amelie (2001)
I watched "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" back in high school and remember liking it even though it was pretty weird and quirky. It's something I should potentially rewatch, but I'm kinda afraid of liking it less now that I’m older...

Zarutaku said:
Little Women (2019)
I've been obsessed with Anne of Green Gables for the longest while but never ended up reading Little Women every time it got recommended to me; I probably would need to read the book before anything else...

Zarutaku said:
Before trilogy (1995-2013)
I somehow never heard about the Before trilogy, but it seems promising. I don't think I've ever heard of any romance movie that got a sequel after a whole decade not only once but twice. (and they actually got all three of them on the streaming service I have!!)

Those are good recommendations overall. Thanks!

@149597871 Isn't Lars von Trier the ugly guy who SA'd Björk? 💀 Also, elitist movies are pretty much always freaking boring. I'm not watching those just so people can think I'm some pretentious prick. Not that you are a pretentious prick or anything... (OK, maybe just a little bit)

I may return here to recommend more once I've given more time to think about it, but for a recent release I recommend Weapons (2025).
Taxi Driver (1976), Godzilla (1954), Mothra (1961), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), Monkey Man (2024), Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), The Shape of Water (2017), Clueless (1995), Legally Blonde (2001), The Godfather (1972), The Suicide Squad (2021), Love & Pop (1998), Ritual (2000), Shin Godzilla (2016), Parasite (2019), Lolita: Vibrator Torture (1987), Barbie (2023), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), American Psycho (2000), Antiporno (2016), Pride (2014), Moonlight (2016), Super (2010), The Virgin Psychics (2015), and Her (2013) are also recommended.
It would be more helpful to know if there's something specific you're looking for. Are you just looking for live-action movies, or would you also accept animated movie recommendations? Are there any genres or tones or vibes you're looking for?

lmaooo i was just kidding don't worry, you don't have to go though the same experience i've gone though, that's why it low-key irritates me when people say i only appreciate her because of her physical appearances, like I'M NOT HUNGRY AT THIS POINT BRO 😭
But Sofia is still something else so that's why that was worth it, especially when she appeared on the screen of course, rest of the tme was...
Well it was, that's good enough.
But yeah except Madea, they aren't very popular...
Hot pursuit had some buzz tho at his release

Hmmm movies? Seen a lot but can't really think of others to recommend then horror flicks as those are the ones I actually remember liking a lot. OH and Nicholas Cage films, love the fucking acting he does.

And thanks for the ping, I probably would've missed this post otherwise

The Saw franchise (1-7 and 10 aka X) the plot is actually bonkers great and the body mutilation stuff is kinda avoidable, especially if you watch with someone that knows when bones crack etc. Saw 1 isn't like gory at all so check it out at least

Terrifier (only 1 as 2 was crap and never saw 3) a splatter comedy that is corny and bloody but not in a realistic way, a fun watch for me as I laughed a bunch

The Substance, amazing new film that uses body horror to tell a good narrative

(Holy shit I've only recommended body horror maybe that tells something about me)

Hills have eyes, it was fun

Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, Anthony Hopkins is so good even tho the films cut a bunch of stuff (according to my partner)

Spaceman, Adam Sandler is actually seriously acting in this which is weird but works, also there's a thing we still reference irl since it's a character name

Tenacious D, rock comedy from a time when Jack Black was known for weed and rock

Austin Powers, all films are fun parodies of Bond-style films

AND THEN NIC CAGE

National Treasures, good movies that are always a fun watch

Ghost Rider, fun action even tho the sequels have a drop in quality

Face-Off, classic crazy Cage

Pig, serious movie that has great acting in it

Willies Wonderland, FNAF but I like this a lot better than the actual FNAF movie as this is a horror comedy

Renfield, Nic Cage as Dracula? Hell yeah and it's a good comedy

Color out of Space, H.P Lovecraft? Nic Cage? Body horror??? I'm so in! Also a nice modern adaptation of a a century old story

Mandy, a heavy metal revenge story with lovely colours and lighting

And a few other Cage films but those are definite watches for me that we have on DVD

@Nysse I really like Nicolas Cage, actually! Even though his movies always get a bad rap. The last one I watched was Renfield, and I quite enjoyed it (it would still have been a bit better if the gore wasn’t so unrealistic, though).

Well, what films would you like to watch? @fleurbleue

Harakiri (1962) is one the greatest revenge films of all time, on par if not superior to Old Boy (2003). I think its narrative structure is timeless enough that anyone can enjoy the film. High And Low (1963) and Ikiru (1952) are my two favorite Akira Kurosawa films alongside Ran (1985), and I think those are worth watching.

I think the best thing you can do is go to you local independent movie theater and make it a habit to go to their programs. For example, I often go to Coolidge Corner Theater and The Sommeville Theater whenever they have anything interesting showing. Many of these types of theaters will run programs about a specific theme or director.

An example I found in Quebec is the Cinema Moderne, but since it is a big city known for its artistic scene (allegedly), there are many more independent theater which shows classic films of all decades.

@CC Eraserhead is by far one of the most famous cult films of all time alongside The Rocky Picture Horror Show. I am no connoisseur of obscure media.

Hey, I said cult, not obscure. It's not my fault the only two films you've talked to me about are Eraserhead and The Room! I don't think fleur wants to have "oh hai Mark" stuck in their head for the rest of their life.

Oh, and, what about Interview with the Vampire (1994) with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in roles you'd absolutely never pin them for? A floral mew probably isn't into the gothic, but if at all you appreciate that sort of aesthetic it's a nice film to look at.

I also recommend A Better Tomorrow (1986) , Red Beard (1965), and especially Peking Opera Blues (1986). I think you'd really enjoy that one @fleurbleue

It is reminiscent of the anime Baccano! with its madcap plot and its pretty large cast of charcters set in the historical backdrop of 1920s China, with a pretty strong feminist undertones enriching its lead characters while never reducing them to caricatures. I just hope my recommending it to you did not put you off to it.

@CC Does not cult imply a degree of obscurity? I mean yes, less people probably have actually see Eraserhead than The Avengers, but I seriously do not watch that many cult films! Why would I need to watch cult films when I am already a part of your harem-cult, Moderatrix-chan? No but I seriously do not watch many cult films. I am going to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show soon.

I would never do such a thing. There's even supposed to be this implicit agreement that we aren't supposed to talk to each other (but that doesn't stop him from pinging me apparently, and I can't even answer since I told him I wouldn't talk to him until he said it was okay!)

Oh, and, what about Interview with the Vampire (1994) with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in roles you'd absolutely never pin them for?
Is there anything going on between Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise? If yes, I might be interested.

I just thought there'd be no teasing, and not no talking. :/ We can still discuss movies though, right?

I don't want to spoil, but yes, but it's also complicated. If you like angst then you definitely have your vampire movie for the month of October.

Oh...so it is Brokeback Mountain but with vampires.

OT: I do recommend Night of the Juggler (1980) if you like a romp through 1970s New York City.

How bad is this case of "I don't know any popular movies"?
You tell me, the only movie I watched among the ones you listed is Shrek and I'm pretty sure I was so young it wasn't even of my own volition.
@fleurbleue Well, not so bad. Sounds like you didn't touch the infinite franchises that start well and cheap and keep going on forever after. Or indies that are from when you were a kid or before.
And Cube (1997) is canadian too.

Wrong! I love romance genre! Eyes wide shut, Love, Piano teacher, Caligula... ah, damn, that last one is historical, strike it out.

What do you expect, Princess bride, Singing in the rain and Casablanca? For one time in life, be serious!

The Lord of The Rings (2001-2003) Seriously just watch this trilogy already!
The Last Samurai (2003) A personal favorite
Gladiator (2000) Classic for a reason
Terminator 1 (1984) & 2 (1991) Also Classic for a reason
The Mummy 1 (1999) & 2 (2001) It's like Indiana Jones but cooler
Stargate (1994) It's a solid movie with an interesting idea, but the tv-series that came after to function as a sequel with new writers and actors was so much better
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005) You can watch the first 2 prequel movies and this one and then skip anything else Star Wars related without missing out on anything. This was where it peaked

There are so many other classics like Back to the Future, Kill Bill, Die Hard, Rambo, Twilight, Harry Potter, Friday the 13th, Green Mile, Indiana Jones, The Shining, Braveheart, Signs, Blade Runner, The Sixth Sense, Kingdom of Heaven and probably hundreds of others that didn't instantly come to mind. But start with LORD OF THE RINGS!!!

The Last Samurai: I think I might have seen some scenes of it while it was playing on TV... never watched it fully, though.
Gladiator: Never watched it. Not really sure if that kind of story really interests me, though.
Terminator: I don't know... Maybe it's good but I just don't feel like watching it at all. It would require a strong convincing.
The Mummy: I love those movies (and Brendan Fraser). I've watched them quite a few times, in fact.
Stargate: There's an actual movie of that? I do remember the TV series a bit.
Star Wars: I've seen all the prequels, and I do remember the 1st and 2nd ones being mostly forgettable.

I love Back to the Future! I don't even know how many times I watched them. I do remember watching Kill Bill, but I barely remember anything, to be honest. Die Hard, I watched the 1st one and some scenes from the one with Samuel L. Jackson. I did watch the Twilight movies... and all of the Harry Potter movies... Never any Friday the 13th movies. I didn't watch The Green Mile but I did read the novel. I did watch the old Indiana Jones movies. I watched The Shining a short time after I read the novel. I don't think I ever watched Braveheart. Is Signs the movie with the aliens where they all put tinfoil hats on? I'm pretty sure I watched that as a kid... Never watched Blade Runner, The Sixth Sense, or Kingdom of Heaven.

But I'll probably watch the romance movies Zarutaku recommended to me before The Lord of the Rings... (unless you tell me there is actually some good romance in The Lord of the Rings movies, which might make me reconsider).

Nice! I miss those types of "adventure into a cool forgotten culture" movies. Another movie that I'd recommend on the Ancient Egypt theme is the animated movie The Prince of Egypt
fleurbleue said:
Stargate: There's an actual movie of that? I do remember the TV series a bit.

Yes the movie came first, directed by Roland Emmerich, with Kurt Russell and James Spader playing the main characters who were then replaced by Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks for the tv-series Stargate-SG1 which was a direct sequel to the original movie. And then that series got so huge that it also got spinoffs such as Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe

It looks like you've seen a decent amount of movies, at least from my limited sample :P I've always felt like I never knew what movies and references people were talking about, and same thing with a lot of games. But I blame that on WoW fully consuming so many years of my life. LoTR doesn't have much romance in it and what little the movies had were cut and pushed away into the various extended cut editions. One of the better romances that I've seen recently was The Glory but it's a series rather than a movie

He does have surprisingly good takes about a lot of things but I feel like most movies are kinda shit and if you didn't watch them when they were relevant you won't appreciate them since they will have inspired other more recent movies that you might've already seen. The only exception to this is Tolkien since no matter how much LoTR inspired fantasy and thousands of other movies it has never been able to match it, so it still feels fresh and new

I already posted about it in another thread. It's kinda spoilery but here goes:

fleurbleue said:
I watched it yesterday. It was pretty alright, honestly. People were complaining about the new actor, but he’s still pretty cute, even if he's no Henry Cavill. The sci-fi elements were all awfully dumb, but no one watches a Superman movie expecting hard science fiction. I knew some right-wing people were complaining about this movie for some reason; I guess it was about the conflict between the two countries and how it seemed to be a barely camouflaged parallel to Israel and Palestine. And all those constant comparisons with real life made Lex Luthor's downfall all the more unrealistic: we all know that in real life nothing would actually happen if some billionaire declared their intention to make their own country from stolen territory.
But I don't watch that many superhero movies, so I guess I don't get too bored whenever I watch one? It's not really worse than watching some generic action movie. But I did watch Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and the first Wonder Woman (but didn't care to continue beyond that). And if we go far enough in the past, I did watch a few (I'm not exactly sure how many) Christopher Reeve Superman movies when I was a kid while they aired on live TV.

Oh okay. Henry Cavill is a name I only learned about after hearing about the drama surrounding The Witcher series, but he seems like an actor that cares about the source materials. Weren't the sci-fi elements of superman always stupid? I mean it's based on an old comic book series and sacrificing a good story for the sake of realism probably wasn't as common back then

American politics brainrot seeping into and rotting every conversation about new movies is really tiresome. Everyone already knows that Hollywood is a huge propaganda machine but that doesn't mean that there is no entertainment to be found, or that literally every single detail contains some hidden meaning that people need to get mad about
fleurbleue said:

Yeah that's about the same that I've felt when watching them. The first Ironman movie was pretty good from what I remember, and the 3 Batman movies. I sat through the Thor movies before seeing the latest one in the theaters with a friend and they were the equivalent of generic isekai anime. Entertaining at the time but completely forgettable
