By 'artsy,' I mean: abstract, mundane, mysterious, psychological, philosophical, spiritual, etc.
These anime are typically slower paced and are visually striking.

Bonus: Name an anime that has a lot of action and is extremely artsy.
ow + nw = 90-2000s

I’m always gonna prefer artsy anime because it can go in so many different directions. The weird visuals and the unique storytelling always keeps things fresh. Action’s good but it can start to feel samey after a while.

I definitely prefer artsy anime because usually I zone out during most anime action scenes.

Cool question.

The Ghost in the Shell films and Ergo Proxy are the obvious examples I can come up with. I get that they don't really have "a lot of" action, though.

People are allowed to kick butt with style, so I guess a nice mixture of both is appropriate.

I like when there is a healthy balance between two of these elements, so I voted for "Both". However, if I were to pick one and only one of them, then I guess action, hehe.

When an anime is artsy, it offers something new and special

Once you've seen one action anime, you've pretty much seen most of them

I wouldn't say all mysterious, psychological, philosophical ecc. anime fit in the artsy category, and i definitely wouldn't include mundane in that

Anyways, i enjoy psychological/mystery anime just as much as action, and if they're combined in some form so much the better

As for an anime that is both artsy and action packed, first that comes to mind is Land Of The Lustrouse, it's not my favorite, but it's definitely both visually striking with it's abstract almost psychedelic style and has some breath-taking battle sequences within it

Full respect to people having different taste, but ngl, i never understood this take on an entire genre

To me, every genre has it's core characteristics that make a show of that genre, but that doesn't mean each show within it can't have elements that make it unique

@DigiCat You're right about how not all mysterious, psychological, philosophical, etc. anime fit into the artsy category. However, what I meant was that 'these are some of the traits of an artsy anime.' Either way, it's not really a rigid 'category,' and so, limiting it to just those types of traits or zones in anime is also a disservice.

I've mostly heard praise for the Land of the Lustrouse !

50/50 because both kinds of anime have their fair shares of hits and misses.

Bonus: Katanagatari (not extremely artsy but definitely more than most action anime)

I think I generally prefer something action oriented over artsy, because the "artsy" shows often do a poor job of executing the "artsy" stuff. Action shows are more consistent, so I tend to be disappointed with them less frequently.

in anime i see action, romance, comedy, and slice of life anime as the bread and butter. It's the one that puts the food on the table and grow the anime fandom.

at the same time the artsy anime is the one that makes anime truly worth this much attention and discussed as a great art medium. If action anime is the brawn then artsy anime is the brain and the heart.

and also i think you are playing to loose here with the definition of artsy man, i could only think of a couple anime that i could whole heartedly classify as artsy

I have no choice but to pick artsy since you include so much into that option.

I like explosions and people beating the shit out of each other as much as the next guy but the artsy stuff hits even harder. I love how it keeps my brain constantly occupied.

I don't like "abstract" stories, though philosophical and psychological are some of my favourite themes. I do prefer action anime in general however, if I really have to pick one.

Maybe Frieren. Not sure about "lot" of action, but it does have some good action.

Artsy can be surprising, so imma choose that for sure.

I think Mob Psycho is a great example.

for me I think it depends on what mood I'm in. I could be in the mood for something simple or something much more intellectual. I'm more likely to finish an action anime faster, but I will enjoy an artsy one much more.
Then again, I do need to watch more artsy ones...
