If someone has time to watch hundreds of days of anime then surely they should have the time and motivation to learn Japanese.

I am trying to learn Japanese on a learning app called renshuu. I get distracted by many things so I don't spend much time on it. I am trying my best. I hope someday in the future I will be fluent enough to not have to rely on subtitles.

time, sure. you don't need motivation to watch anime, it's a passive activity. learning requires active engagement since it's a kind of challenge.

there, question solved. next!

@MYZIC
I would recommend against using mobile apps of any kind that are designed specifically for learning a language. Anki is just a general purpose SRS flashcard tool that I use for vocab. If you want to know more about general Japanese learning go look at a guide like TheMoeWay, tatsumoto-ren's guide or Donkuri.

@qasdrtfgbhtghnm I'm using anisong. I don't need to speak or write.

But I want to learn to watch anime without subs.

My list of vocabulary words is approaching 1000 at this point.

The trick will be how to put it all together.

I would only ever learn Japanese if I intended on taking a long vacation in Japan, which I don't think will ever happen, so I spend my time mastering other things.

Well, most people probably just don't see any need to learn it. You don't really need to know Japanese if your engagement with Japanese media is limited to anime and manga. I've learned it years ago so I can read untranslated VNs/eroge but people on this site don't give a shit about them.

Even if a hardcore anime fan doesn't actively take time to learn the language, after years of watching anime they will likely passively pick up some of the language anyway. Source: I have passively picked up some basic Japanese via anime, Japanese Twitter, and NicoNico comments

Why should I learn Japanese if I like anime?

Do k-pop / K-drama fans learn Korean if they consume Korean entertainment? No.

After a certain point it really wouldn't hurt to try it out. Experiencing anime in it's original Japanese form triumphs any sort of translation even if you don't understand 100% percent of everything.

When it comes to seriously learning a new language you have to... serious. If you only want to watch anime then learning the entire language might be too much of a trouble. People who actually learn the language are usually those who are doing a deeper study, or they would be just polyglots learning one more language. You might be underestimating how hard it is to learn Japanese. After Chinese it's the second hardest language to learn for non-natives. You will be spending a couple of years just going the elementary school stuff. And on top of that you also need to study a lot of things that even the native speakers aren't aware of, because it's just common sense to them.

I've been watching anime for 9 years, and have only 103 days watched currently. You know what that means? That I didn't binge watch and only watched about 2-3 episodes a day, and not even all 365 days. So trying to imply someone has a lot of time in their hands just because "they have watched >100 days worth of anime" is very presumptuous. Watching anime is my hobby, not a way of life, I don't really have so much time in my hands that I'll be able to learn one of the toughest languages in the world. If I do have enough time in the future, I might try learning spoken Japanese.

@thewiru what am I reading... well obviously you can't just learn one out of the three required systems needed to even read. Hiragana is like only used for the particles. You also need Katakana for the foreign words and the 2500 Kanji at minimum. Plus the grammar to even make sense out of the sentences.

If you just want one whole system using moon runes better try Mandarin. Or if you want the mega simplified one go for Korean.

@Megistus7 Japanese people write using a mix of hiragana and Kanji and a bit of katakana in their daily lives.
I guess what I should've written was "If it was even worth to just learn how to understand or perhaps even speak Japanese, but bot read/write".

@thewiru Yeah, now it makes sense. And honestly, if its worth it is subjective. People say that learning another language is never a waste but it depends on what you get out of it. Japanese is a huge investment and if the only thing you are getting from it is pop-media, maybe there is worth there, you will be getting the unaltered product at the end of the day and broadening your own world view as some concepts exist in Japan that do not in English and vice versa. But if you are not planning to become a master Otaku, getting a Japanese SO, or moving there; what else is there?

OP makes it sound like learning another language is something everybody can do. It's not. Especially a language that is fundamentally different from their own like Japanese. Learning a language is like installing an operating system on your brain, many people can do that easily, but only once when they are young. Not many people can become fully fluent in another language, and unless you absolutely use that knowledge every day and fully commit to learning it, it will be easily forgotten. I'm in my 40s now, things like whole new languages are off the table.

I can only pick up common words here and there to add to my vocabulary, but it's around a hundred Japanese words at this point after watching anime for 29 years. Forget about reading it.

For one, you don't need to if you just casual enjoyer.

And if you've been in the game for a long ass time, you will naturally pick up some level of japanese (at least the spoken part). For example I never learned it on purpose, but through just passive absorption over the years I can understand quite a fair bit of the spoken language.

yes. if you're a hardcore anime watcher you must make some efforts to learn the language. it will even be easier for you as you've spent years listening to japanese so compared to a total beginner who is learning japanese for the first time you will be yards ahead. there's no reason to not put effort into learning japanese. there are many apps available that you can use. daily 5 to 10 minutes is enough if you just want to be able to read and understand spoken japanese. for writing it is tough and more time investment is needed.

Unless you can make learning Japanese a passive endeavor (multi-subs with Japanese on everything you watch and moderate focus on the characters), watching anime doesn't actually do much for your learning the language, you can watch 600 anime and have an elementary understanding of the language.

I would say a big reason you don't see people making an effort is, for the average anime fan, there is little reason to learn it. Almost every anime they will ever be interested in will be subbed, as will be most manga they'll read.

If you check Visual Novel fans, rates of serious attempts to learn the language are much greater. Since among Japanese visual novels, ~90% of the titles are not translated to English.

Sure, but 漢字は難しい.

I've seen enough anime to have a bit of a grasp on the language. Enough to understand and enjoy drama CDs. But kanji, man. Just looking them up when reading RAW manga or whatever is tough.

There are some nice manga that put furigana next to the kanji, but they are so small that I can't make them out most of the time. And just memorizing kanji without context is a herculean task. Most of them have at the very least two different readings. Some have 10+ different readings.

what even is a "hardcore anime fan"?
for what's worth, I learned Japanese a few years ago and know enough to watch anime without subtitles and read easy untranslated manga and novels.
you don't even need to know that much to be able to understand a lot of anime without subs anyway.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

As a casual watcher now, I would say there's no need to learn Japanese?
A lot of anime watchers have no interest in learning, using, or applying Japanese for anything else besides Anime or Manga

It's like the typical High School example, you take a easy language course to pass, usually Spanish, pass it and forget it soon after
